[videoblogging] saving a .qtl file to the desktop?

2006-01-29 Thread Digital
Does anyone know how to save a streaming .qtl file to the desktop? I
try to save as a .mov but end up with only a reference link. If I try
to save as an .avi I end up with 15mb worth of the qt logo! :/

Any pointers appreciated.

Re: [videoblogging] saving a .qtl file to the desktop?

2006-01-29 Thread andrew michael baron
You just simply change the filename from .mov to .qtl

When trying to do so, your OS may ask if you are sure you want to
change the extension so just say yes.

I have been making .qtl files recently in order to open videos in
full screen mode.

Not *everyone* wants ads Kunga.

Were you not listening yesterday in the video conference when several

As with many things, on-line auctions may work well for some and not for
others.

Here's a question for all: will you try this and, if so, will you tend
to set reserves or take whatever you can get?

This is an easy fix.The problem is that you have video on your site so each person who is coming down your pipe is acting like a monster and sticking around while the download the big file.If you use Andrea's good idea of simply making a reference video (this is basically just a  pointer that takes only a few k), people will come and go so fast and they wont get in each others way or clogged up.Or, if you just change the video link in your post to point to your backup, your Dreamhost plan may hold-up even better because each person only needs a few k and their gone.On Jan 29, 2006, at 11:27 AM, Brett Gaylor wrote: I have a loaded pistol under my pillow and a crate of ramen noodles in my toilet tank.My backup plan of server switches, however, has a snag: Any time you switch servers, you have to change the DNS, right?  Is there a way to make this faster ? hosting, which, again is not the cheapest around.

i figured for $9.24, i could use it for scratch space, check out
Dreamhost and wordpress since everyone seems to like them and grab a
new domain name. so i did.

of course, in a year, the competition will be offering 10x more for

I have found, in general, that Wikipedia works best when the people
who edit and shape the information are people who are interested or
fans, without being directly involved. Thus they can be less subjective.

I agree with this.
I would not feel comfortable writing the wikipedia definition on videoblogging.
I have too strong an opinion of my own.

I'd like some people who can see it from the outside.
It'll happen.
We're starting to settle down enough.

You are totaly right, DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to
propagate worldwide. I do not see any advantage in this schema of
having a backup-host unless you know the main site is going down for
more then 48 hours.
Having a backup-host also means uploading the same stuff twice evry
time...
I think I keep it with one host and have backups on DVD. I trust my
hostingcompany in having a backup in case my backup fails and having
redundant hardware. (I know they have)
I'm not dreaming of another host.

Re: [videoblogging] saving a .qtl file to the desktop?

2006-01-29 Thread andrew michael baron

The way to d/l the entire contents of a reference file, like a .qtl file for instance, is to do the following:1. open up the file in Quicktime Pro.2. Do an Apple-J to open the video properties. 3. Click on the resources tab and identify the source url.4. Download the source file (Apple-U to open a url in Quicktime). On Jan 29, 2006, at 3:04 PM, Ted Tagami wrote: I need to go the other way around. I am watching a .qtl and want to save as a .mov. just rename it to .mov like Andrew said. If you're getting the info from a

I must say I was amazed to hear you say that you host your HTML with

Any pointers appreciated.

a .qtl file is a text file, written by QuickTime. if you have the
full url of the qtl file then download it as a text file (just use
the browser to view it for example).
inside the qtl you will find the url to the video. load that in
quicktime player and file save as.

the catch is that after one year you are supposedly hooked and now have

hosting, which, again is not the cheapest around.

i figured for $9.24, i could use it for scratch space, check out
Dreamhost and wordpress since everyone seems to like them and grab a
new domain name. so i did.

of course, in a year, the competition will be offering 10x more for
1.95/month ;)

Re: [videoblogging] tracking site views

2006-01-29 Thread Stephanie Bryant
Heath,

Are you looking for a way to track views of your vlog's website, or
actual downloads of your videos? Because if you just want a hit
counter for your website/blog, there are about a gazillion of them out
there-- SiteMeter is pretty popular, though I don't know how much spam
it generates. However, a site counter won't necessarily count your
vlog's views, because subscribers to your RSS feed won't cause the
counter to register a hit.

FeedBurner tracks stats for its RSS feeds, if you use it to create your feed.

Of course, if you host your own video files, then you can track usage
with server logs and analysis tools, but then you're paying for your
own bandwidth.

I have a question that may have been asked before but I did a search

recomend a hits counter/viewer, so I could see how many people are
visiting my vlog. It is purely just out of curisioty, right now. I
have seen some other vloggers with a lot of detailed information on
there site and I know I'm not quite there yet but I want to learn as
 much as I can.

 Thanks for your time

yep.popular tactic on some radio talk shows where the ads are almost entirely transparent from the regular talk show bit.it works well.for video it will be interesting. rboom can command such terms. often, thats not the case.
but i am happy to see andrew and amanda take control of their show and make sure its quality and its personality stay in tact despite playing ads. andrew, was curious i assume most to all watch rboom episodes all the way through right?
most advertisers prefer to 'air' commercials before vids, not after... but if you are able to show that most eyes and ears are still there at the end, i suppose it doesnt matter too much.

Not that I am an A-List vlogger by any means, I wouldnt do this no

I do have Google Ads on my site and that's plenty. To insert ads into
the videos? In my opinion, that's just obnoxious to the viewer. As we
are inundated with advertising on TV all the time, I would rather that
online videos be clear of this crap.

I hate the fact that big media sites force you to watch commercials
before their content. I refuse to watch their videos for that reason
alone. If vloggers started doing this, I wouldn't watch their videos
either.

I disagree. I think that if some vlogging goes into the television-like
way it's going - for those who want to do it that way - they need the
ads to support the production costs of the show, including reporting,

Re: [videoblogging] New FireAnt

2006-01-29 Thread Clint Sharp
Jen Simmons wrote:

It's not that much more bandwidth to have two stylesheets -- I'm not
talking about two different websites. A stylesheet is like 4kb --
 smaller than one extra photo.

Sorry, I was referring to bandwidth in terms of the fact that we don't
have the personnel to handle it. We need to be focused on adding
features people will actually care about rather than designing seperate
style sheets for seperate widths.

Looking at your code -- you are using structural xhtml for a lot of
the page, but then you've got a table in there for positioning. If you
rewrite the structure so that the css handles _all_ positioning, and
you have no tables / no html positioning, then the only thing that has
to load different from one version to the other (web browser vs.
Fireant) is to pull the appropriate style sheet. You can build the
design so that the two versions show different content, even while
they show the same htm file. A div can be showing and positioned in
one place by one stylesheet, while being positioned in a different
place on the other stylesheet -- or hidden all together. The trick is
just to program something into FireAnt that triggers the alternative
stylesheet, different from all other browsers.

Actually, the tables are in there because doing CSS based layouts for
things that were aligned tabularly (like a table) was just too
difficult. Tables are not evil people, it's just that they should be
used in a semantically correct fashion. We are aligning data
tablularly, so therefore we used tables (and they have a nice byproduct
of most browsers rendering it right without shitloads of effort, unlike
CSS, unfortunately). 99% of the layout on the site is controlled by
CSS, including the layout of the tables.

Looking at your code somemore... yeah, you've got a _lot_ of styling
mark-up in your html. If you yank all of that out of there, and put it
all in the external css file you'll see your bandwidth go way down!

It's there for a reason. Those are output based on variables present in
the templating system. The system needs to display various states for
different reasons. Yes, I could create classes that do the same thing,
but frankly when you're looking at the code, sometimes it's easier to
see that one result of an if does a display: none and one does a
display: block than trying to remember what the class names do in the
CSS. I've got something like 30k lines already in this codebase, it's
not exactly simple to maintain :).

You've just got to get someone / turn yourselfs into someone who can
code the layout by using 100% css positioning, and 0% html
positioning, and pull _all_ styling out of the html mark-up and put it
 in the external stylesheets.

Not only can you use two stylesheets for two different places (like
full-screen browsers and Fireant), but you will be much further along
in making the site compatible with cell phone browsers, and be in a
great place to do visual redesigns without having to change your html
 markup on every single page.

i hope this helps (and isn't annoyingly bold of me to tell you what to
 do),
 jen

It would have been fine, if there wouldn't have been the
misunderstanding about bandwidth. Trust me, I know all about CSS, and I
can go on for hours about the hours I've spent trying to workaround
various rendering quirks in various different browsers. Take a look
again at our CSS file. Don't tell me that with 1000 lines of stylesheet
I'm not using CSS for layout and positioning. 90%+ of our site is
arranged using div tags and CSS positioning. Tables are used where we
have tabular data (the main page). The issue of multiple layouts is not
a CSS or markup issue, it's a time issue, hope that clarifies.

Re: [videoblogging] How to protect your privacy on Whois?

2006-01-29 Thread Jen Simmons
The problem with this approach is that you need to have a current email address on the list. And that's what spammers want the most. If you put an old email, you may not be able to move the domain when you want to / have trouble renewing / etc.

There are services where you pay for someone to be a go between whois and you. I'm using the service at GoDaddy, too. It's a pain to pay extra on every domain I register (and i have a bunch), but it's worth keeping my info away from spammers.

[videoblogging] Maximum Video iPod Compatible Dimensions

2006-01-29 Thread Kunga
FYI according to my EyeTV2 Export software, the maximum dimension of
a 3x4 video that will still play on a video capable iPod are

544 x 408 @ 198 KB/sec

and for a 16x9 video (ie HDV 1080i source)

640 x 360 @ 198 KB/sec

This may have already been covered before as I do not read many of
these posts. But I do have notes where max dimensions were thought to
be a little smaller. Just in case you are trying to post video that
will still play on an iPod but also scale up to a TV much better than
320 x 240 will these appear to be the real maximums. It may have
something to do with BOTH dimensions and bit rate. But all of the
above exports from EyeTV2 copy and play on the Video iPod. They
amount to over 10 MB a minute. So any insight to what happens when
you lower the bitrate to 5 MB a minute (or about 100 KB/sec) would be
appreciated.

I'm gonna get back to much lower rates soon. I can't see offering
anything more than 1 or 2 MB a minute as long as my form remains
long. But I think short form is worth 5 MB a minute for sure.

Man do we need more computing power or what? Exporting off air
digital movies and shows for the iPod even at 10 MB a minute takes
MANY HOURS on a dual 2.5 G5. Interesting thing is that different
broadcasters are transmitting different bit rates and the lower bit
rate recordings export much faster than the bloated ones. In my
market - Salinas, Monterey, Santa Cruz - the digital broadcasters are
transmitting HD rates even when they are only transmitting SD. Only
the PBS affiliate transmits at much more efficient and lower bit
rates that look in SD just as good as the NBC, CBS and FOX affiliate
bloated SD transmissions.

Anyone else here studying the digital broadcast signals in their air
with EyeTV2 hooked to an EyeTV 500 receiver?

are exploring the potential revenue streams. I think it's important
that the independents be the groundbreakers in this area. Otherwise
the Big Media will step in and then nobody will have any vocabulary
that isn't established solely by them.

I wouldn't put ads on my personal vlog, but that's cause my personal
vlog uses CC material that's specifically non-commercial. I'd have to
go back and remove or edit those posts if I wanted to start putting
Google text ads in my feed, or have ads run in the videos, and nobody

But I've got a vlog that's sponsored by a local club now, so we'll see
how far a sponsorship can take a person. It still has to be
non-profit-- the club's non-profit.

Even if your content is CC, you can use ads on *your own* content. It
is yours after all.
CC license, or any license for that matter, determines what *other
people* can do with your content. So even if your content is under a
non-commercial CC license, you can certainly include ads on your own
site with your own content (assuming it is all your own content and
not using pieces of anyone else's content with a conflicting license).
