[videoblogging] vlog research - low income/urban

2010-04-03 Thread Lisa Harper
Hi, I'm researching a topic that has to do with encouraging kids from
low income and/or urban landscapes to express themselves with video.
This could be both singly or as part of an educational program. I
vaguely remember a few years ago a number of interesting projects that
focused on videoblogging from both within the US and also less
developed nations. Can anyone point to such projects/sites -- or does
anyone know how successful such efforts have been? I'm imaging that a
significant challenge would be funding such an effort and also giving
access to cameras and editing software to the kids.

2010-04-03 Thread Lisa Harper
Very helpful pointers, Gena and Jay.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say this is research for a final project in an
information architecture class. The makers of a small, independent film
focused on events surrounding a middle school, urban kid want to develop
their original concept into an educational series -- but in a participatory
fashion. They would like to encourage kids (likely through educators) to
learn about film and contribute original footage. Anything beyond this
basic concept appears to be the stuff of research and imagination. I though
to reach out to the the video blogging community on grassroots projects that
might offer insight. Certainly, not only questions concerning IA (scenarios,
design, etc) important, but also questions such as feasibility, cost, etc.

 Hi Lisa,

Kids and teens are creating video content independent of school. Finding
classroom appropriate videos would mean a lot of YouTube slogging through
 um, yeah, whatever... type videos.

Start with skateborders and go from there. That is part of the key to
finding content. What would the students want to see? After eliminating the
first and second things coming out of their mouths you could find gems.

The costs has dropped dramatically. Yes, still expensive for a school
district cramping for funds but editing software is already on the computers
 for Mac and PCs.

There are inexpensive web camcorders between $50 - $100. You don't need
 anything else but time.

 On the education vibe:

The projects can be teacher initiated or as part of an overall educational
program. Because kids are involved many of the projects are behind school
district intranets. There are a few video projects that are on-line but tend
to have older students as participants.

It helps to look for the teachers as creators/initiators in order to find
the projects or dive into the educational non-profits that showcase these
 type of projects.

 Edutopia http://www.edutopia.org/video and

education based video projects that involve students.

Can you be more specific as to what exactly you are looking for? Are you
searching for how-to do this, what do you need or how much is this gonna
cost and can it be done?

The resources are out there but they are spread out across multiple
 disciplines and interest groups.

[videoblogging] Helmet Hero Wide questions

2010-04-01 Thread Lisa Rein
Hi gang,

I need your expert advice peeps ;)

A friend of mine is using this go pro helmet cam when he's doing his
racing vids:

here's the camera: http://tinyurl.com/goprowide

and here's the latest vid he's shot so far with it:
http://www.youtube.com/user/zjdub66#p/a/u/1/yB4J49_BOqg

I'm wondering if there's any way to get higher quality out of that camera.
He mentioned there's a firmware download that will let it take a 4 GB
card, but I don't think that improves the quality.

As you can see from the vid, he's moving pretty fast...

I'm wondering if he can trade in some of the length (53 minutes) for
higher quality or something.

here are the specs:

Model Number: GHHW5170

Resolution: 5 megapixel (2592x1944) photo, 512x384 video

Sensor: CMOS

Video Format: MJPEG, 30 fps, saved as .AVI file

White Balance: auto

Self Timer: 10 seconds

Audio Format: 8kHz, mono

Memory: 16 MB internal, expandable to 2GB with SD card (not included),
expandable to 4GB with SDHC card (not included) via free firmware upgrade

SD card. 1hr 52min video (incl. audio) with optional 4GB SDHC card

Power: 2x AAA batteries (not included), lithium batteries highly
recommended. 3hrs. video recording with lithium, 2hrs. with NiMH

great info kevin, thanks :)

So it's actually is a fisheye? and not just a wide angle? That's what my
friend wuz tryin to tell me hehe...

so you're recommendation is to just get the HD version? or do you know if
there's any way to get more out of the SD?

thanks!!

lisa

 Hey all,
I had the SD GoPro Hero cam, and recently bought the HD version. Not
 only
do you get better resolution, the sensor seems to capture more vividly,
especially outdoors. It's such high quality that even importing into
 iMovie
seems to drop the HD video quality down a notch. I probably have to figure
out how to import it properly.

Here's an example I shoot using the car mount:
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yn5l4BvjPE4

For geeks, a few subtle difference between SD HD versions:
 - HD version now dates footage, while SD version didn't have any!
 - Audio pickup is much improved, factoring wind noise.
 - Interval shots allow longer timing, up to 1 shot per minute.

I carry it out quite often, simply because it's probably the smallest
fisheye lens camera around. Almost 180 degrees, but actually 170.

2008-12-11 Thread Lisa Rein
I think saying we don't need to talk about the money is a little like VC's
telling start up founders not to worry about the stock.

Why are we suddenly money grubbing bad individuals to even bring it up?

YouTube has structured things so they can be the only game in town, so
other companies can't compete, just yet.

That's good business for them, but it seems like the same old bad business
for the rest of the community/little guy.

I'm curious (again, trying to get out of re-reading the *current* youtube
TOS, which seems to be ever changing:) -- but does it still say they can
do anything they want with your content, once you upload it? (Like put it
on TV)

Members of this list have commented in the past about how insulting it is
to see the words YouTube Video on television, when one makes it on the
air. I believe it is the youtube TOS that allows them to do this legally
-- although I am unclear whether it trumps the required attribution of
CC licenses for CC licensed works uploaded to youtube. It seems to me that
this is more of a respect for the creator issue.

The list has always been like that, though I don't agree with it.
I think its partially because this list was around before youtube and
rebelled against youtube as a walled garden.

Personally, I'm happy if anyone can make a living on what they love. It
 really doesn't matter to me.

 Hi all,
I do a lot of work with Joomla, and after upgrading to 1.5 and adding
some mods, I've found it to be a pretty nice multimedia platform.

http://k9disc.com is the current project I've been working on. It's a
bit more than a videoblog, and because of the nature of the community
and my lack of video content of late, I'm not really utilizing it as
well as I could be, but the old joomla embedding problems and such
have been smoothed over quite a bit.

Which reminds me I need to check back with Blip and see if the

And try to make a video less than 15 seconds that can be strung, so that
it's easy for people to edit your video with theirs.

Re: [videoblogging] best web-based remixer for peace project

2008-05-07 Thread Lisa Rein
hey are there no answers to this because nobody knows? or nobody cares? :-)

thanks!

lisa

 Hey guys,

I'm working here with my team mates on our little stanford peace project,
and we're wondering what the best site web-based remixer is - if any ever
got beyond the kind of fairly-usable versions that existed a year or two
 ago.

For instance, jumpcut is OK - but seems to still be kind of slow.

I'm asking because we're trying to determine what the best site is for
hosting all of the little peace clips -- to have them in one place. These
can be edited together - by us and others. So we need them all in one
 place.

A web based remixer would be a nice touch - if one is out there that
 really works.

 thanks in advance!

time is of the essence! :-)

[videoblogging] My jumpcut evaluation - in a word - skip it

2008-05-07 Thread Lisa Rein
Hey gang,

I just couldn't resist saving anyone a bunch of time and frustration by
letting you know that you can totally skip jumpcut, for now.

sidenote: wow it's nice to be back to just being an independent blogger
now and not feeling the pressure, as i did for several years, of worrying
about the business repercussions for my start up if I spoke my mind. I
gotta tell ya, i'm so glad those days are over. sheesh.

best,

lisa

Okay Jumpcut is OUT for my project. It's choking big time.

The scary thing about this as that an unexperienced user might actually
waste a good hour of their time on this, and then get pissed off when it
never works, and then blame our project for sending them to a lousy service.

Here's why I'm branding it unusable:

1. It couldn't even upload the 6, 15 second clips I prepared.

2. It wasted a lot of my time before it failed (which is a no no for any
project where you have had to recruit people to participate in the first
place)

3. It uploaded 4 out of 6 first. Then tried to tell me the other two clips
were bad (no assets) -- which they were not, i double checked

4. Then it pretended to be uploading them while it gave me a bunch of
stupid messages to keep me there waiting (which implies that they KNOW

 Hey Lisa,

Are you saying that you use to work for Jumpcut and now that you don't
you can talk bad about their service?

 Tim

oh god no.

I was a founder of Dabble (one of seven total!) a metadata search company
that indexed the other 400+ websites. So we partnered w/all of them, and
I was in charge of partnerships even!

So when something sucked i couldn't just say so and warn people about it,
as I was so used to doing for many years before.

Sorry to be unclear! :-)

and also, to be clear. Jumpcut was always a little buggy, but it never
just didn't work -- while trying to be so cute about it in a way that
really got under my skin -- like what I experienced this afternoon - May

This is not an accumulated experience.

I did not duplicate it three times or anything, as would have been proper
for any kind of thorough technical evaluation.

But I was not trying to do a thorough technical evaluation. I was just
doing a little user eval, as a genuine user, for my peace project.

Sorry i should have included the above clarifications in my original email.

[videoblogging] best web-based remixer for peace project

2008-05-06 Thread Lisa Rein

[videoblogging] My Stanford Peace Class Videoblogging Project

2008-05-03 Thread Lisa Rein
Hi gang,

I'm currently taking a class at Stanford on using web technologies for Peace.

(Clarification: No I'm not an undergrad at stanford :) The instructor, BJ
Fogg, is letting me be a guest student in the class - taking it as if I
was getting a grade, and working directly with other real students in
the class. I'm really loving it and am learning so much. It's awesome!)

So without telling you too much about the project - partially because I
don't know much yet, and partially because I don't know how much about the
project I'm actually supposed to explain to you, and in how much detail,
when that time actually comes, I can say that...

The project will involve:

1) videoblogging
2) peace
3) perhaps shooting a little 30 second - 1 minute video

I'm not asking you to commit to participating at this time, but if you
think there's a chance you *may* even be interested, please send me an
email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to let me know, if ya could.

I'm trying to locate as many interested people as I can ahead of time, so
when the project is finally ready to go, probably at the end of this week,
I can contact them quickly and hopefully expedite the process.

Thanks!

peace,

lisa

Flash video looks great on my Archos 605. Drop it in and it plays.
Lisa

On Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 8:27 PM, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Technical and business reasons both seem plausible.

One technical reason would be that iphone UI is smooth because it uses
hardware acceleration. Not trivial to allow flash to take advantage of
that, or multitouch etc. And looking at how much cpu flash uses on the
desktop, and previous experiences with flash on other mobile devices,
its easy to imagine very poor framerates and quick battery loss.

So Apple wont want things to run badly on its flagship mobile device,
so they will stay away from flash unless the performance lives upto
what people expect = not easy. Im convinced theyd rather not have
flash than have flash at crappy framerates.

Business side, I dont know what their relationship with Adobe is like,
seems these days that they are not special friends, and also probably
the kind of control-freakery Apple want to exert over what apps can
run on non-hacked iphones ipod touch's, also plays a part.

If the overriding urge for flash is because of video, then the gradual
move over of a lot of flash video to flash h264 video will ease the
problem, it isnt that hard to make a player that will use flash to
encapsulate a mp4 in the browser on desktops, and embed the same mp4
directly for iphone browser playback, automatically.

The iphone SDK announcement was interesting today but anybody who
probes deeper isnt allowed to talk about the details, so we'll have to
wait some months to see what apps come out, and how restrictive Apple
are about sorts of apps (as they are acting as gatekeepers over what
 can be installed).

Re: [videoblogging] Fair use in the Digital Age

2008-01-17 Thread Lisa Rein
Hey Jay :-)

so fair use = part or all of a work for the purposes of: criticism,
comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research.

with words on the internet, it's fairly cut and dry.

bloggers are usually criticising, commenting, reporting, teaching or
reserching. it's easy :-)

with something like a remix song, it's less clear perhaps. Does the song
provide a critical commentary on a subject in a way that requires a sample
of the subject in order to make the commentary? etc...

But here's the actual text for fair use, if you're interested:

http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107
(text from this cut and pasted below)

and here's a little more, from my grad paper on the subject:
http://video.lisarein.com/sfsu/guide/finalpaper4-12.html#fair_use

best,

lisa

http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap1.html#107

§ 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use40

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a
copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or
phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes
such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple
copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an
infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work
in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall
include —

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of
a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;

(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the
copyrighted work as a whole; and

(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the
copyrighted work.

The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair
use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

Two laywers (one from NBC, the other from Columbia law school) are
discussing what fair use these days when it come to remixing.
 http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/16/830/

NBC laywer says, fair use is not a right, a misconception and
 misstatement frequently made these days.
you can imagine how the conversation goes from here.

This is a really interesting argument in light of the issue that John
 had over at Total Vom:
 http://www.detrimentalinformation.com/2008/01/my_legal_struggle_with_christi.html

As ive said before, its strange that it's totally accepted and
encouraged for text bloggers to use text from other sources to build
 their own work.
The lawyer from Columbia uses the example of the NY Times Book review
using quotes from books without fear.
This makes for a healthy media ecosystem.
So why would online video be any different?

[videoblogging] revenue models/writer's strike reality check for my presentation

2007-11-11 Thread Lisa Rein
Hey gang,

I just landed a last minute presentation at this conference tomorrow:
http://itvcon.com/

I want to take the opportunity to inform the public about the writer's
strike -- hopefully you can help me make sure I don't leave anything out.

It's only a half hour talk with ten minutes for questions -- so it's more
a question of making sure I don't oversimplify anything to the point of
not being factually correct, and/or don't leave anything obvious out...

And I think a lot of you know, i've been more in outer space/the future
more than videoblogging these last few months, so I'd like to double check
with you guys to make sure I haven't left out anything obvious about the
present situation in videoblogging :)

Here's the talk in an uber nutshell:

the tagline (yeah i'm on a mice trip lately -- biotech is warping my
brain -- we're all just mice! mice!!!)

Videoblogging: Of Mice and Monitization

A general overview of some of the new video revenue models and how the
recent writer's strike fits in.

So for revenue models:
-show in a box
-rocketboom
-ask a ninja (not sure what current model is, but would like to include if
I can figure it out)
-revver
-youtube revenue share
-spout (four eyed monsters)
- suing YouTube/Google - which had 595 mill of it's 1.65 bill for
infringement settlements (although artists aren't entitled to any of that)
(yeah i'll double check those numbers :)

-- am i leaving any other recent players that deserve mention?

re: writer's strike
- media companies stalling for years, talking about market calming down,
-but everyone is in agreement that there is *some* revenue coming in
-from various deals, and no one can deny that the online vids promote
shows (which lead to higher ad revenues)
-- so there is some financial benefit
-- what the writer's guild is saying is give us a percentage of that,
whatever it is.

They also don't want to screw up with waiting forever to get an online
percentage like they did with VHS and DVD (of which they still only get
2.5% -- after waiting like ten years to get it).

(Looks like the (now) current head of the writers guild had to fight just
to get a percentage from HIT animated shows a few years back.)

ok thanks!!

lisa

Re: [videoblogging] CC: Noncommerical and vlogs

2007-09-13 Thread Lisa Rein
Yes gina's answer is correct, in my opinion.

This is why I've never put tip jars or ads on my site. Because, not only
do I host clips from others under various CC licenses, but I have many
fair use clips from TV/Movies that would clearly be kicked out of the
fair use category if my blog were to have any commercial uses. (per the
fair user four factors test)

Jay's suggestion of contacting the creator is also a great way to get
clearance from content creators who may not care if you have a tip jar/ads
on your site. (Get an email from them saying it's ok.)

However, doing so does complicate things, in that, at that point, you're
back to using traditional copyright w/permission from the creator, rather
than exercising the cc license. (Meaning that you can no longer display
the non-commercial license as is w/the work when you display it on your
commercial site without confusing the licensing issue, because doing so
would make it look like tip jars/ads on vlogs are still non-commercial.)

I don't have a good answer for this yet :-(

thanks,

lisa

Can you use music that is labeled Creative Commons - Non-Commercial
in Vlogs? Is the prospect of earning some form of revenue from ads or
tip jars considered commercial meaning you can't use non-commercial
  music in your Vlog?

also, it's really helpful to contact the person who made the music.
Not really to ask permission since the CC license makes usage
clear...but just to make a relationship.
dont we all love it when someone uses our work in ways we want?

I'll be playing all my new songs, along with many of my songs from the
last fifteen years or so, in little sets off and on all night long,
starting around 6:45, and going till probably around midnight.

I've got a video projector and various footage I've been putting together
that will be going in-between and during the live stuff.

I'm flying in my old guitar player from Idaho, Ron Taylor. He and I co-wrote
many of the songs on the lisarein.com website:
http://www.lisarein.com

I'm also flying my sister up from LA to sing harmonies with me on a couple
songs.

It's pretty sweet of this pub to let me take over the place for the night.
It's actually been a little dream of mine to have enough stage time to be
able to go through all of my favorites from the last 15 years -- and in a
fun filled environment where I can have as many people there as I want.

Ireland's 32 also has these *really* great home made beef or chicken pot
pies, so if you need to come by early (it is a Sunday, after all), come by
around 6:30 and make a dinner show of it. (Actually, you and a friend can
probably split one easily, they're HUGE.)

They have a great pool table upstairs too! It's just an all around great
party locale!

They're letting me use the bar for the night in the hopes I can bring in a
crowd to buy drinks. So drink up. (It makes the music sound better anyway
:-)

And if I'm lucky enough that you actually have old favorites that you want
to make sure I perform, by all means, let me know! [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In between some of my sets, my good friend
Tim Perkis will be performing a little set with his daughter around 7:30.

http://www.noisypeople.com
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Perkis

You may have seen Tim's cool new movie about improvisational music, Noisy
People, around recently. Tim's also a fellow Dabble co-founder. (And a
fellow ex-Dabbler and co-founder*.)

The Breezy Days Band will also be squeezing in a little set prolly around
9:30 or so.

Thanks! And I hope to see you there.

Re: [videoblogging] Best Practices for Media Aggregators Pixelodeon

2007-08-30 Thread Lisa Rein
Hi Roxanne,

Sure, I'm still down :-)

Give me a day or two to fit it into my rotation. (ooh nice long weekend
coming up too :)

Should I post my comments/suggestions here?

Or would you rather we worked on it offlist, and then posted an edited
version?

(The plus there is that the whole list doesn't have to bothered with
editing/typos/etc. -- and we can save their attention for *real* policy
decisions, etc. that might need to be made as a group :)

But sometimes, in the interest of transparency, people like to see all the
edits in a list. So I'm cool either way.

ok thanks!

lisa

 Hi Lisa,

I am finally pulling things together...and have added in comments to
the original doc from here and the talk I gave at Pixelodeon to create
a little site online. Someone is working on a seal of approval
graphic and we've had one of our programmers build the form and
database for people to sign on to the best practices.

Are you still willing to take a look at the document itself? It is a
little long, so we've used some Ajax to help focus on the different
sections. But I think I've gotten too close to it and having your eyes
 on it would be helpful.

 http://www.itvguild.com/aggregation-best-practices.php
 http://www.itvguild.com/petition.php
 http://www.itvguild.com/signers.php

The form is live so you can submit your data; we can clean it up
before the site goes live so don't worry about testing it.

 http://www.itvguild.com/signers.php

The site needs navigation and a home page message plus the seal so not
 to worry about that stuff.

 Thanks Lisa!

  RE: http://www.barefeetstudios.com/aggregation/

Hey this doc looks like a great start -- but could use re-org and a few
explanatory sections - in terms of having a summary, lists, etc., to
 make
the spec a little easier to read and understand.

Also, I think it's very important to consider this more of a wish
 list,
in the short term, for content owners and aggregators alike (albeit a
 good
starting point for a score card of sorts in the future.)

My point being that, to be fair, many of these best practices are
actually very complex features that could literally take months or
 years
  to implement correctly.

I'm not that worried about Mefeedia -- we seemed to have a good score
when I went through the little checklist, for the most part, so I am
  pleased...

But it was a little confusing going through the checklist, the way it
 was
  formatted...

so I would be happy to offer my services as spec editor (for a little
clean up now, and while making updates in the future) -- so we can add
 a
summary, resources, links to working examples, etc., to make this a
 nice,
professinal looking spec that will have to be taken seriously by
businesses and can hopefully become a real pseudo facto standard for
 years
  to come.

(I'm a w3c spec wonk from years back, if that explains why I would
volunteer for such an arduous task. i'm sick. i actually like writing
  specs :-)

When we have those specific details and a clear guidelines for
implementation in place, I believe more companies and vloggers will
 feel
better about signing on to support it too.

  Thanks!

In preparation for Pixelodeon, I have gone through the many posts on

included introducing the idea of reverse racism into our culture.
Which they did (check out the 1992 republican national convention).

Ha! Plastic coffin. How true! Now that I've got a Nokia N95 my poor flip cam
is sitting in the dark waiting to be picked up again. But I was happy to use
it on a canoe trip a month ago and it did a great job even in the little
waterproof pouch I had.

I did a video comparison of the flip with the RCA small wonder and the flip
won hands down. The RCA has the very nice feature of SD expansion but the
video quality is poor and the software does not exactly run off the camera
as advertised. You have to install a couple of dependencies first. Here's
the comparison.

I just got it last night, and took it straight to the bon dance at my

For a while I was flummoxed to not find a single administrative menu

realized that's exactly why this might work for kids, grandma, or the
wholly impatient YouTube fan itching to get SOMETHING online.

The hardest part of getting started was getting the thing out of the
darn molded plastic coffin it came in. The hardest part of using the
videos it recorded was... well, using a Mac. It comes with stuff for
Windows, but to use OSX video tools takes some hacking. More hacking

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Sane Release form

2007-07-14 Thread Lisa Rein
Hey jay and gang!

The question that is still unanswered is:
does a legal release form need to be in legalese?
or can I write one up that is human readable, but still a serious
 document?

I am not a lawyer, but, I think I can help here.
(People ask this question a lot :-)

Well if two people agree on a document and sign it, it's legally binding
and all that -- and in that way it's a serious document, in the sense
that I think you mean.

But legally binding won't get you far later if you have a signed
document whose true legal meaning leaves too much open for interpretation.

Ambiguity can be your friend or your enemy - But I'm going to make the
case for ambiguity not being your friend (although I will pitch both sides
in a p.s. below)

Lack of legalese often leads to ambiguity - and that will cause trouble
later when things go wrong. eg when one party or the other decides that
the other party has violated their agreement in some way.

If you wrote up on a piece of paper:

X can use Y's artwork
X will pay Y $$ for it
X can use it for anything for two years after the date of this document.
and both X and Y signed it

The question then becomes (to a judge) - what were the terms of the
agreement exactly? (which uses were allowed, and which were restricted)

So questions like: What does anything mean. Does it mean friggin
anything? Or any use that existed to the best of either party's
knowledge at the time of the document? or whatever

And then, did X violate those terms, or not?
(Did the use in question fall under the allowable uses?)

So with Creative Commons licenses -- since they are based on existing
copyright law, if you were to prosecute a party for the unauthorized use
of your copyrighted work, you could not afford yourself the legal
protections under existing copyright law if the licenses did not use the
exact legal language *of existing copyright law. (Without that language,
it's difficult to determine what the authorized and unauthorized uses
in question even are.)

Even with the human readable versions, it's really still too complicated
to figure out very quickly, if ya ask me, so I've created this table that
summarizes and compares them - with the pros and cons of each, here:
http://video.lisarein.com/sfsu/guide/prosandcons.html

well, hope this helps :-)

thanks!

lisa

(co-founder, creative commons)
(former director of operations, wide hive records)

p.s. total sidenote on ambiguity:

It totally depends which side of the agreement you're on at any given time
whether the ambiguity helps you or hurts you.

When I'm an artist selling a photograph - I want to be paid for *that
specific use* of my work, say, for an album cover, so the company has to
come back to me to give me more money if, say, they want to make t-shirts,
or whatever.

But here's the flip side: as a record label person, I don't want to have
to go looking for the artist to make a separate deal every time I want to
make a t-shirt or print a mug or whatever of the artwork you just paid
$1000 for fer your album cover.

It's easier to give them a little more upfront and write up an agreement
that says you can do what your what you want with the artwork -- usually
for a limited period of time, like two years after the album comes out --
and if the artist is smart, they can protect themselves by putting in
language like doesn't not include commercial uses other than those
directly promoting the album., etc.

The .avi video quality looked ok for outdoor shots and Zooey was in
motion enough so that I could see if there was any artifacts around
her. I did notice a bit in the background grass from time to time.

I'm glad that I can bypass proprietary software and edit as normal.
What kind of batteries does the gizmo take and how long do/did they last?

Hey this doc looks like a great start -- but could use re-org and a few
explanatory sections - in terms of having a summary, lists, etc., to
 make
the spec a little easier to read and understand.

I very much appreciate your feedback. FWIW, the html on that page came
straight from MS Word - nuf said! The PDF reads a little easier, and
yes, there is plenty of room for improvement. Let's see what kind of
feedback comes in here over the next 24-48 hours, then I would love to
let you place your loving hands on it so we have an improved version
 for Pixelodeon discussion.

I'd like the group to debate this; many feel that there are ample RSS
standards in place to accommodate most of what we have proposed.
Techies?? Please weigh in on this.

I'm not that worried about Mefeedia -- we seemed to have a good score
when I went through the little checklist, for the most part, so I am
  pleased...

 Congrats.. :-)
The idea of a point system has been in the back of my mind too. IMO
that would require considerably more work (and agreement) plus a
fair-minded panel to rate each aggregator. I think it's a great plan
for version 2, if we can get v1 into motion. I also envision creating
a master list of aggregators with some sort of indication of
pass-fail, so we are on the same page with this idea.

I don't expect anyone to score perfect; the idea is to move
performance standards forward into tangible form. And the caveats are
really meant to both provide wiggle room and cover the nuance of a
particular service. For example, a lot of people host at blip. Blip
shares movie-based ad revenue but not the display ad revenue that
wraps media on the page. (I am pretty sure I am accurate on that.)
OTOH, they host (not just aggregate) our media and provide so many
value-adds. They also qualify as having a direct relationship with
the CO, which also means anything is negotiable.

But it was a little confusing going through the checklist, the way it
 was
  formatted...

so I would be happy to offer my services as spec editor (for a little
clean up now, and while making updates in the future) -- so we can add
 a
summary, resources, links to working examples, etc., to make this a
 nice,
professinal looking spec that will have to be taken seriously by
businesses and can hopefully become a real pseudo facto standard for
 years
  to come.

(I'm a w3c spec wonk from years back, if that explains why I would
volunteer for such an arduous task. i'm sick. i actually like writing
  specs :-)

You're on! I'll send you raw files off list tomorrow and look forward
 to your mastery Lisa.

When we have those specific details and a clear guidelines for
implementation in place, I believe more companies and vloggers will
 feel
better about signing on to support it too.

 Agreed.

  Thanks!

We have also had our programmer create an online database with
submission form so that as soon as we have it polished, we can all add
our names to the document as signatories. A page will display all the
signers, updating in real time. I think the more of us we have backing
this up, and spreading the word in our own networks, the more we can
bring to bear in the marketplace.

I am working on options to live stream our discussion from Pixelodeon
so you need not be present to win - I mean speak. This may be
limited by our bandwidth, but stay tuned and we will at least set up a
person or two on skype who can be relaying inbound questions and
comments. If you want to get the latest real time updates please
 follow me on Twitter:
 http://www.twitter.com/roxannedarling

Jay had a great idea that once we have this in place, it can be sent
directly to an aggregator in violation, and we can even have
designated representatives to meet with each company. Mike at blip has
been bearing the brunt of this work; a document like this with
hundreds (thousands??) of signers can only strengthen our position.

We've envision the online signin/support petition as being open to all
people - not just media creators, so our base of support is wide open.
Once we have this in place, then we can start tracking and blogging
about those who play nicely and those who don't, to bring our
collective influence to bear out there.

 Aloha,
 Rox

We'd need someone to just drive people around in the van all day/night
though...but I think there's enough time to find someone for that :-)

is this what you're already working out?

That is the other project, to provide a van or carpool option so that
we can go as a bunch then party on before, during and after the event.

PixelodeonFest will have a new site up soon with all the detail. I

My point is there is a reason for all the constructs in vlogging. And
that point is accessibility and usability. I could give a crap less
about what people want to call it, but without many of the core
fundamental features in a blog like permalinks, and an archive it'll
be hard to get and retain regular viewership.

Hmmm. Time will tell. And technology will evolve whether we're involved or
not. Lots of people don't know what permalinks are. But they know they can
subscribe for things in iTunes and see previous episodes listed in iTunes.
Show notes? It won't be long before subscribers start asking for them. And
things will happen. Once you involve the general public, you also involve
decision-makers in the general public. They won't act, until they
understand...

That Amanda has caught the attention of mainstream media and public is
encouraging. They have taken among the best the vlogger community has to

Re: [videoblogging] Video Nation: Agency Finds A Majority Now Create Their Own Video, But Few Post Them

2006-12-01 Thread Lisa Harper
Okay... this is cool, but... what about the problem with bandwidth? Is the
overall throughput on the global internet actually increasing and can it
meet the demand??

I, for one, am stuck with relatively slow speeds at home. There is no cable
or DSL available so I don't subscribe to videoblogs, it's too great a burden
on the pipe. Uploading video is a pain unless I find time to do it at work.
Bittorrent has been incredibly useful. But it's akin to snail mail given
I've downloaded some stuff that's taken weeks. Psychologically, I'm happy
with this arrangement -- it's not supposed to be fast. Some of the folks I
know who are relatively untech-savvy -- have the same problem with getting
video on the web. Capturing is not a problem. Editing doesn't go beyond
trimming and is not difficult learn. But putting clips on the web takes them
a whole lot of time because of low bandwidths. So, in my mind, there is a
process here that is long and difficult -- not actual steps in and of
themselves.

Where I see a potential gain is the ability for the device (in the field) to
actually background transfer media to some website where users can edit,
post, etc. So, imagine a cellphone where data transfer does not impede other
functionality on the device. A kind of bittorrent queue. By the time the
user is home and ready to review and edit videos, they are online and the
effort is now relatively small to edit, delete, share, etc! Of course, you
still have the b/w problem at home for loading but quite frankly, I can
see a technological solution here, too... previews and edits could be made
on thinner media (smaller data rates, frame rates) -- and even the ability
to torrent down the user's inbox so it's resident on the home machine with
the ability to sync edits

Video Nation: Agency Finds A Majority Now Create Their Own Video, But

THAT UNDERSCORES the potential of a vast, untapped market for
 user-generated
video, new research conducted by interactive agency Sharpe Partners
indicates that more than half (54) percent of adult Internet users
 currently
create their own video offline, but only 11 percent actually upload it to
the Internet. That margin, says Sharpe, represents a significant
 opportunity
for software and system providers to help facilitate the migration of a
burgeoning consumer generated video marketplace online. It also suggests
 an
even more profound fragmentation of the video marketplace is looming than
many industry experts may have predicted. One of the chief reasons for the
disparity between producing and posting video is the difficulty consumers
said they have with the process. The study, which was conducted online by
Harris Interactive, surveyed 2,125 U.S. adults between June 29 and July 2,
and found that more than two-thirds of those who create their own video
found it difficult to edit their content due to the lack of
 consumer-friendly software.

Clearly, given easier solutions, consumers will be far more likely to
 edit
their videos, said Sharpe CEO Kathy Sharpe. And those who edit their
 video
are presumably more likely to share it with others, which will expand this
 market even further.

[videoblogging] Assistance and feedback for Richard's Wife Please

2006-11-16 Thread Lisa Ours
Hiya Gang,

I'm sending out a plea for some help from the group. Richard's wife
recently did a vlog titled: Blue Star of Hope. It has a part 1, 1.5 and
2. Could folks please go to the site and view the vlogs and then could you
please post back with answers to the following questions?

1. How did you view it (flash version, QT version, Windows media version)
2. How long did it take to download?
3. How was the quality of the video?

Richard is of playing at Vlog Europe currently and Richard's wife is doing
all of this stuff solo right now. She's noticed some slight buggyness with
the download times in certain formats and could really use some
compassionate feedback on the list to assist in working out the bugs.

Thanks in advance to everyone for your help with this. Richard's wife would
have emailed the list herself except that she hasn't got an email that can
handle the volume nor does she have the extra time so I am being the loving
and dutiful Daughter and assisting her in this effort.

Cheers,
Lisa (daughtershow)

We go to the news to see the state of the world... but, in fact, a
better pulse would be vlogs, if more people had them. Look how

Re: [videoblogging] Flash Video question for Actionscripters

Does this mean that flash 8 is basically unproblematic with respect to
duration and scrubbing?

I've just started working flash and flash video and love the
flexibility of it. The sad thing is that ffmpeg does not transcode to
On2VP6 yet.

This is a question for the Flash developers out there...

I'm creating a little side-project Flash application that plays Flash
Video files (FLV) from a playlist.

I've run into a documented bug in FLV versions prior to Flash 8 where
the duration metadata is incorrect. This screws up the time progress
bar and seeking functionality of my video controller. There must be a
trick to get the duration for older versions of FLV since its obvious
that other Flash video controllers can do this. Any advice from the
 Actionscripters out there?

Here's some documentation of the bug (scroll to the bottom):
 http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=FLV_Video_Compression

 and here: http://www.sti-media.com/blog/archives/000111.html

This documented bug is quite common since most video upload sites
automatically compress with Sorensen (Flash Video 6/7 codec).

I've used a tool called FLV Metadata Injector to correct the FLV metadata:
 http://www.buraks.com/flvmdi/

This does work, but I'd rather be backwards compatible with Flash Video 6/7.

This for sure not a stupid question.

You could ruin your equipment if you used oil based products. (I do
not know if WD-40 uses oil thoug) WD-40 will dry very quick, collects
dust and that will jam your tripod again.

I used silicone spray for my tripod lubrication, this spray specialy
made for non metal lubrication. (Use outside do not inhale!!)

Where to buy silicone-spray.

Most likely they have it in a hardware store like Home-depot, Menards,
Ace-hardware for about $3 or $5 a spraycan.

It works great for drawers, garagedoors, inside and outside doors,
everything that sqeeks. Do not spray it on areas that have to be
painted because the paint won't stick anymore!

Date: Fri, 12 May 2006 14:17:47 -

Whew, okay. I just finished peaking under every rock I could think of
to find all the women videobloggers I could find and I came up with
around 70. I was actaully quite surprised - it never seemed like that
many - not that 70 is that many.

So, okay... I promised myself that I would give back (not that I'm
like out of it to be giving back - but you know what I mean) to the
vlogging community somehow. And I do like the idea of collaborating -
even though I'm often short on time. So in an attempt to bridge a
virtual gap of sorts I created this collective: http://vidlicious.com

I really want to see more women creating video. I want us to find ways
to work together. And I often like that we don't agree on things
because it keeps us on point and thinking and finding solutions.

This collective vlog is just one big link loving/video-making fest. So
please email me if you'd like to join. If you don't email me, I'll be
forced to spend another night sending out 70 individual emails asking
for support. I'm hoping it benefits us all as it continues to evolve.

Okay, I'll be waiting!

Zadi

PS: And if you know of any female vlogger I missed on the list, email
me that info too. Thanks...

Thanks, Jon. I really enjoy following your videoblog and find myself referring it to others. Good luck to you... this is an outstanding use of technology that both supports the good of a community as well as educates others around the world.

The Nata Clinic is responsible
for health care delivery to the 6,000 residents of Nata, Botswana and the surrounding

The clinic also oversees the three remote health outposts of Maposa,
Manxotai, and Sepako. The outposts are reached by dirt/sand track
and the farthest is 36 miles away. The clinic is so busy that
it is often referred to as a hospital. The closest general hospital
is 60 miles away and the closest surgical hospital is 120 miles away.
The clinic consists of two main buildings. The 1st building has
two consultation rooms, one room for wound dressing changes, pharmacy,
and an office. The 2nd building consists of a 3 bed
ward, 2 bed delivery room and a 4 bed post delivery/recovery room.
There is also a trailer where the PMTCT (Prevention of Mother to Child
Transmission) Lay Counselor performs pre and post test counseling for
HIV/AIDS and the nurses collect blood for the CD4 (T-Cell) count of
HIV infected patients. The compound also has four houses where
some of the nurses live.

They have no idea! I think they first heard the word videoblog last

So let's show them some great stuff, some stuff by women, some stuff

I'm sure vlogs by women about womens' issues would be really

 Help!

I'm visiting a well-known womens' magazine in NYC on Thursday to talk
about blogging. Last minute email from hosts says, Show us some
 videoblogs!

So, if you were going to see the editors of a magazine you've probably
seen on the supermarket store racks, what would you show them?

I'll love you guys forever for helping me out on this one!

you to export data. I call such apps roach motels -- Your Data Gets
In, But It Doesn't Get Out.

Here's what I wrote back then, and below that is a response I got from
Niall Kennedy, who wrote to me about it:

David Sifry of Technorati
http://www.sifry.com/alerts/archives/000423.html: I've been very
intrigued by the possibilities around Reading Lists, and so we wanted to
support them as quickly as possible in the most intuitive place as
possible. /Exactly how does Technorati use OPML in its implementation of
Reading Lists? Does it import OPML but export something else? Import and
export? Who's played with it?
/

And here's the response I got from Niall Kennedy of Technorati:

Hi Lisa,
Technorati outputs OPML for its Blog Finder product across every blog
finder page we serve. This feature allows people to easily populate an
RSS aggregator with a list of feeds in a given topic.

http://feeds.technorati.com/blogs/gardening?format=opml

You may also download a listing of the most popular Blog Finder tags
in OPML format.

well, they support opml for the import or 'reading lists' but they

but i want more, i want to export a tag, even if i am only allowed to
export the latest 50 or whatever from the tag. i'd like to see the
option and since technorati is built around links, they could be more
open by providing more ways to take links out without voodoo.

Which part is insane? The fact that Technorati might not support a

Do they have an xoxo list instead?

Re: [videoblogging] Technorati OPML ??

2006-04-04 Thread Lisa Williams
I'm not sure the OPML file would be so large.

The OPML file would have a single line of text for each blog containing
the RSS URL of the videoblog, along with some elements to make the
OPML work.
Let's imagine that each line of text was 1K (probably an overstatement,
but makes the math easy). Then the OPML for 9,000 videoblogs would be 9MB.

The problem wouldn't be the OPML file--but what happened when you tried
to load all those videoblogs in your aggregator. Probably explosions,
smoke, flame, toxic fumes ;)

This brings up a good question, how to make lightweight directories of
videoblogs. OPML would be a good use of that, because it's used to make
outlines (like a tree structure). Each person could edit their branch
of the tree. But we'd need smart aggregators to be able to move from
branch to branch without downloading unless we really wanted to.
(Forgive me if the videoblog aggregators already do that. I just got
started again with FireAnt, which I like a lot. I had it on my old
computer, but then that computer died an ugly death, and it's taken me
awhile to get a new computer and get it all set up again).

If they did support OPML (to export the blogs being syndicated for a
tag or whatever), the file would probably be HUGE (in most cases).

Think about it. Technorati (and the other blog search engines) are
indexes millions and millions of blogs, Potentially you could have
enormously gigantic OPML files. (Maybe something like OMPL files that
are 9000 GB in size.) And because of this, they probably thought that
there is no point. (Even in the cases where there are very few blogs
 show up for the tag/search.)

RE: [videoblogging] Vlogging dangerously...brainstorming session

2006-04-03 Thread Lisa Ours MA PLPC
I know for me, I took the concept to mean out of my comfort zone or
Doing something you wouldn't normally do Perhaps a little bit of
exhibitionism if your an introvert... even a small amount of exhibitionist
behavior can be dangerous for someone who is really Buttoned up.

I hate being in front of the camera so... I love to do footage of others
doing things but having to be the one on is really hard and uncomfortable
so I'm figuring on trying to be in a few things this week as opposed to
running the cameraEwww... I already feel dirty just thinking about it.

Anyway that's my two cents worth on the concept...

So, Amy and I are having a hard time coming up with dangerous vlogging
ideas that we can fairly easily do. We also don't want to do something
too asinine or juvenile (ala Jackass or Trigger Happy TV stuff) because
that's so farr of the usual vision of our vlog.

I'm sure there are others with a little creative block, too, so how
about a little brainstorming? What, to you, embodies vlogging
dangerously?

We're already doing a piece on a gay rodeo going on down here. That's
pretty inherrently dangerous. Other things we were thinking about...

...trying to evangelize the great Flying Spaghetti Monster.
...doing a glamorbomb and vlogging the results.

Honestly, though, finding dangerous material that can be done around
the constraints of a dayjob is pretty tricky. What other ideas have
people had?

[videoblogging] TechCrunch: Motionbox best online video sharing so far

2006-04-02 Thread Lisa Harper
This is moving us toward the idea of high granularity of
videoblogging that Adrian Miles talks about.

http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/04/02/motionbox-best-online-video-sharing-so-far/

To get what Motionbox is doing, take a YouTube and add a ton of
really great editing, mashup and deep tagging features. Like YouTube,
Motionbox transcodes files to flash to reduce file size and
standardize viewing. But they also store the original files and allow
you or those you authorize to download those files and/or purchase
DVDs with the files.

Thanks for that, I would love to meet you too, work permitting I could
make time to meet up in a more mutually neutral place than Milton Keynes,
Coventry or even Northampton would be better for me, being an Northerner
and all that. I shall also ask my Partner In Crime Paul Reynoldson, If
he wants to meet up too, but he's in Donny and might need some coaxing.

So We'll see then

doing just about anything else. When I suggested doing something video

Yes I mentioned it on the list once or twice. There is a Meet the
Vloggers event at the West County Mall Apple Store in St. Louis next
Saturday March 25th 6 to 8PM. If anyone decides to fly in for that
one I can recomend some nice hotels ... heh heh.

Actually it would be nice to see if we could get some of the

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Premiere Confusion...HELP?

2006-03-15 Thread Lisa Ours MA PLPC
This is just a humble suggestion from the peanut gallery... but:

When I capture my video I do a bit of Mini-editing during capture. I tend
to Pre-view the footage I've taped and then rewind and Stop capture on
portions that are either obvious bad shots or not central to the plot line
of my end product. That way I automatically cut some space and time off of
the production before I even begin my editing process.

Perhaps that could help you as well seeing as how you are dealing with
limited drive space.

Cheers!

If I were in your situation, I would Export Movie (project) to .avi,
then once I check to see that the .avi is working properly and it's
the way I want it... I would delete all the clips (your 50 minutes of
footage) and start a new project using the .avi file you just made.

That's not a bad idea. I can turn the .avi back into individual clips,
then, using the split tool, right?

I'm surprised you have that much footage!  When I film Kitkast, I end
up with about 50 minutes of footage as well, but my show is 10 minutes
long!  I sure hope you're not recording in between takes...

This was on-site taping of the a gay pride festival in Ft. Lauderdale. We
were on site for a good 6-7 hours and there was a lot to shoot. Besides
that, we wanted to make sure we had good footage of large crowds of people
so we could edit in a feeling of bigness, and for me, that meant making
a lot of throwaway footage.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Top Ten Vlogging Mistakes

I like the concept of a Copyrighted Material limited Use Fee I know I'm
willing to pay to download music from one site or another for a nominal fee.
If I like the CD I'm still gonna go out and buy it at Sam Goody or Tower so
I can get the cool cover art and lyrics, photos etc.

If I'm willing to do that then It stands to reason that I'd be willing to
pay a yearly subscription fee of a reasonable amount to a site that would
allow limited use of material by more famous musicians, film-makers, etc.
How realistic is it that the Big Guys would ever do this? Not likely at
all unles the faceless masses bring it to somebody's attentioncome to
think of it... do we have a Vlog Lobby?

whatever i want from whomever i want, and that is
  conceptually problematic.

I don't expect the law ever to do that, nor would I consider it fair.
Artists have a right to decide how their music gets used. If and when
someone asks me to take down any of my videos because they don't like my
use
of their music, I will certainly do so, though I firmly believe that my use
is not doing the artists any harm and may even give them some useful
publicity (I tend to use music not currently popular). But of course they
would have the right to disagree with me.

What I would like to see is a mechanism in place that any artist who wishes
to can participate in, which allows me to use music as stock photography is
used, as Gottadiva describes. The way things are now, it is prohibitively
expensive for everyone except the really big players to use the really big
music _legally_. I ran across an article a few months ago about the
problems
professional documentary filmmakers have with music in their films, even
when the music occurs naturally in the environment they're filming, e.g.
a
ringtone.

All that said, I just did a count and find that I have around 70 videos
which involve no music except what was already there (e.g., sing-alongs at
home, parades and other public events). I have deliberately added music to
only 13 or so of my videos, and in most cases the music is mixed in with
the
original sound such that you could not strip it out and get a clean audio
track, and/or is edited.

CC is a nascent movement;
of course it doesn't suit every need right now. but
the likelihood that CC could grow as a popular
movement into the sort of thing that suits your/our
needs is much greater in my opinion than the
likelihood that the united states congress is going to
suddenly have an a-ha moment, ignore entertainment
industry lobbying groups, and magically stop
repressing remix culture.

Until Napster, there was little pressure on the music industry to lower its
prices (up to $30 for a single CD in Europe!) or improve its distribution
methods or even face the fact that a lot of people don't like so-called
popular music. Now there's a solution that I think everyone can agree on
(iTunes et al), but I doubt this solution would have arrived without
consumer pressure to let us have what we want, how we want it - and then
we're willing to pay a fair price for it.

It seems to me the same could happen with remix culture. It shouldn't be
legal for people to use anything in any way they wish. But if the industry
and the artists were willing to meet us halfway... they might even find
whole new sources of revenue they never imagined.

I'll start - and I know that my opinion is going to be
   controversial

   1. It irks me when people use copy protected material that they don't
have the legal right to use. For example many vlogs use sound from
famous musicians who have not authorzied putting their stuff on the
public domain. Or lots of vlogs will use video clips from big
hollywood films to which they do not have the legal right. I only use
stuff that's authorized under common lisc. AND/OR stuff that I have
   purchased via stock outlets.

I own a virtual agency and I have to negotiate with every artist
regarding usage rights. These folks work hard to produce their work
and I don't feel that it is right to take it without authorization.

   2. Shaky video - ala 'the blair witch project'

   3. Video with absolutely no text so that the only way I know what it
is about is by clicking on it.

OK, so what are some other folks pet peeves.
