Re: [videoblogging] Need advice for road trip
Given that your manifesto is about less, not more, perhaps you have all you need at this juncture? I would add a satellite phone or satellite internet connection, but I don't know how remote you plan to get, or how often you will be returning to areas of cellular coverage or available WiFi hotspots. In our RV, we have a satellite internet receiver, a GPSr (which works in amusing ways), two cell phones (ATT-- I would recommend getting 2 cells on different networks, so you have the broadest coverage), and the usual complement of laptops and cameras. But then, we're not doing a 1-year journalism exercise, so our goals and needs are different. Re: [videoblogging] Re: amateur review of the flip video camera
On the mac, I installed a video codec package that had everything I needed, all in one swoop (I can't remember the name of it it right now-- it started with a P). The Flip does come with software to use with the Mac, though-- no hack required. The Flip's packaging is obscene, it's so hard to get into. I did like the fact that, at Costco, the Flip was all of $90. I bought four of them, but I think I'm going to return three. The hardest part for me is that my Mac has developed an intermittent USB software issue, so the camera gets disconnected while accessing. That, and the MacBook ports are too low to fit the Flip connector, and my USB cable extension didn't want to play nice when I tried it. I have to monkey around with that a bit more before considering it a failure, though. --Stephanie On 8/4/07, Ryan Ozawa [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I was curious about the Flip Video as an cheap, easy option to let my kids do the video thing, but never got around to picking one up. It comes with stuff for Windows, but to use OSX video tools takes some hacking. More hacking than I had patience for. So I just ran the Flip Video software under Parallels. I used the Movie Mix tool, strung together 25 clips, and voila: http://www.lightfantastic.org/imr/extras/videoblog/archives/2007/08/bon_dance_by_fl.html Not sure if I'd have bought one (over the nearly comparably priced low-end Xacti, which has more features), but I love it given the price I paid! By the end of the exchange, he was making vague threats that I didn't know what he could do. Honestly, I find that vigorous, no-exception, outright blatant censorship of these kinds of asshats is the very best way to stop them cold in their tracks. When it comes to my blog, I AM QUEEN and nobody gets to make me feel like less. I have always been mindful of the balance of maintaining my privacy while still vlogging about my life (however sporadically) - but video is still a very personal and revealing medium I've stopped trying to keep my online identity (Mortaine) and my real-life identity (Stephanie Bryant) separate. It didn't work very well, and was just confusing when I'd need to use a personal email account to contact someone. In video, I just do what I want to do, so long as it respects the privacy of others around me. I don't vlog children without both their and their parents' consent, for example, even if they're in a public space where otherwise I could claim fair use. If the Internet were a real-world workplace, the kinds of things I've seen even professionals say to one another would get them fired. I just kind of file it away in my brain as note to self: don't ever enter into any transaction with this person. I frankly don't have time or bandwidth to work or play with people who treat others with so little respect. The bigger problem I have are actually vloggers I meet in meat-space. This may be a local phenomenon, but in the Bay Area, I've had to interact with more than one videoblogger who gave me the creeps, fortunately (but not really coincidentally) always in public events. Since I do presentations and speaking gigs on videoblogging now, I tend to attract more of the gum on your shoe kind of guys showing up to my events. Re: [videoblogging] anyone have any experience with veoh.com?
In the past 18 months, Veoh has (these are all findable in the Y! group archives): * harvested email addresses from this group and spammed them all. Then apologized and purged their (email) database. * posted videos from people in this group who didn't sign up for their service, without link-backs (including copyrighted videos), immediately after which they received a huge round of funding. Then apologized and purged their (feed) database. * been active and useful participants in this group, for which no apology is needed. They've made mistakes in the past, but they do try to rectify them when the backlash hits this group. Which is better than most Internet companies. Were I in the ratings business (which I'm not), I'd give them a fairly neutral rating, which is higher than I give YouTube (which gets massive negatives for hosting millions of videos with really crappy quality, so that people get the impression that crappy video is what videoblogging is about). I do include them in my list of links on the back of my promotional bookmarks as hosting sites, because they are a viable option for video hosting, and they're approachable and Not Evil. Re: [videoblogging] Legal Question, I think..........
Iam not a lawyer: you should probably call a legal aid society for REAL advice, and possibly get an attorney, especially since your video may be subpoena'ed. However: Conventions are usually explicitly not public; that's why they can show movies that would otherwise be not legal to show. You may need to call the con organizers to find out what the status of the venue was. Were you there as a member of the press (were you covering the con for Galacticast, for instance)? If so, you're good to go; it's a press-covered event, just read up on libel law (blur the faces and always say allegedly). If you sell the footage to a local media outlet (hint hint), they will make a determination over whether or not to blur or not blur for their own purposes, and you might consider that a guideline yourself (though broadcast vs. internet are two different media and different laws). Others on this list might know what stringer footage rates are. As for the raid: The MPAA are not law enforcement, nor are they public servants. Therefore, as private citizens (basically corporate lawyers), they can opt not to appear in a movie (unless it's a newsworthy event). Police officers, however, are public servants and can be filmed in the course of executing their duties, in uniform or out of it. You can blur the MPAA out if you didn't get a release. What would be interesting would be to see how the MPAA executed this raid, and I hope you keep us all updated on the progress. --Stephanie On 5/22/06, Heath [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: However, one of the MPAA guys saw me and said he did not want to be on camera. Eddie, does Jason's answer change much when given the information that a comic con is NOT a public place? I'm not sure (and Motor City Comic Con's website is offline), but most media-centric cons are private-- you buy memberships to them, and have to wear a badge to get into panels, sessions, and the dealers room (where these bootlegs were being sold). There was a case in Seattle a few years ago (it settled recently), in which a freelance journalist reported and exposed his apartment building management's discriminatory practices. As a result, he was shunned and threatened with losing his apartment. The case went to the courts, where the judge decided that, because he didn't have a contract with an editor, he wasn't acting as a journalist. It was an absurd decision, obviously catering to the people with money (preserving the status quo, etc.), and probably also partially based on the fact that the journalist in question is kind of an annoying git, on a personal level. But nonetheless, that was the decision. The journalist appealed-- the last I heard, he won on his appeal, but it took 10 years and a complete shift in the idea of journalism in order to get there. --Stephanie On 4/28/06, Casey McKinnon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Great article... Re: [videoblogging] videos shot by cell phones
I use a Nokia cell phone (6682) with Cingular, and post to TypePad via LifeBlog, mainly because I haven't set up my email gateway on my phone and therefore can't actually send email with it (lame excuse, I know; I had to return my first phone because I couldn't do any media on it, which really sucked). The Nokia has a program for video editing which does really basic stuff-- fade outs, cutting, splicing, and voiceovers. So, for instance, I can go on a weekend vacation without my laptop, shoot something cool, edit it, and post it to the moblog. LifeBlog is basically a blog client for cell phones. You don't have to post a picture with it, and even though it has built-in TypePad support, other developers could use the API if they wanted to. I suspect that most people will be familiar enough with the email or MMS gateway on their phones that it will end up being the more common way to post to a mobile blog. I like LifeBlog, but it's more overhead than you really need (another interface to learn, for example). --StephanieOn 4/25/06, Harold Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You know, I found your cellphone vlog the other day, and I was wondering which phone you used to shoot and edit (and post) from. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Easy way to make mobile videos - and lose your copyright?
Which is why that's not the ideal solution I mentioned. As you've noticed, WAP works great-- but only if you get in the cell phone company's pocket. The easiest way to get it to people is to have the videos emailed or MMS'ed to their phones-- from the end user standpoint, that's the easiest way to get video on the phone. Re: [videoblogging] Re: The Last Hours - Death of a Videoblogger Kevin Krutz
Jen, thank you for chiming in NOW and not letting the fascinating discussion go on. We've had this conversation on this list before, last year when a vlogger faked having his kids taken away for something in his vlog. Now, as then, and as with every other fake emotional manipulation in the blogosphere, I am not amused by it. There is an assumed contract between the blogger and the audience that what's there is in some way or another real. This is especially true in video, which is easy to manipulate but seems so real. When a blog is fiction, it's best to identify it as such. Somewhere, somehow, even if it's subtle. More importantly is when a blog blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction. For instance, when Kevin uses his real name but vlogs his fake death. That's not right, somehow. You are fascinated by the reactions because you were not manipulated. Kevin is your student and you know he's okay. I have stopped counting the number of times someone I know online (or someone they know and they forward the information) has: 1) Died unexpectedly 2) Contracted a terrible illness 3) Needed financial assistance for an abused pet 4) Been abused 5) Had a pregnancy/baby All of which, it turned out, never happened. What seems to happen is this: 1) The person posts some announcement of the terrible thing, either as themselves or using an assumed identity. Various facts and proof are offered. 2) The audience or community responds with a show of emotional support, grief, concern, and/or money or cards. 3) One or two people in the community respond with Um this doesn't add up. 4) The rest of the community attacks the skeptic, often viciously. [Fortunately this didn't happen here, which is a real testament to the caliber of the vlogging community.] 5) The truth is revealed, the person never existed, the death was a hoax, there was no baby, etc. Jen, thank you for making this step happen VERY quickly-- the longer the suspense goes on, the worse it gets. Hopefully nobody had the opportunity to lose sleep over this. 6) The rest of the community splits between You should be ashamed for manipulating us! and you should all be ashamed for attacking the skeptic! (even though they did nothing to defend the skeptic, either). 7) [Optional] The perpetrator tries to defend himself/herself with It was a joke, or It was an experiment. My favorite is it was an experiment because it's a completely unethical method of human experimentation, and really obviously a cop-out from the backlash against manipulating people. 8) Next time, all those people will be more skeptical of OMG, he's DEAD! posts. Eventually, we will all be too jaded and skeptical to continue to see each other as real human beings. Then, we'll fake our own deaths/illnesses/pregnancies, because it doesn't really matter if we hurt a couple hundred people-- they weren't real anyway. Now, obviously these don't all relate to this particular case. But one might ask: has Kevin never been in an online community before? Does he not know about this kind of BS and how little it's appreciated or tolerated on the net? And are we seriously still exploring this as if it were somehow new? This isn't new-- people have been pulling this crap since the first time two modems resolved their connection. --Stephanie [I've decided nobody online actually dies, because every time it happens, it's a stupid f'ing joke.] On 4/24/06, Jen Simmons [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm wondering whether to chime in now, or wait and watch this discussion go for a while more. This is especially true in video, which is easy to manipulate but seems so real. Contract? What assumed contract? There is no contract. There is no contract whether it is video, text or photos. This is the internet. There can be no assumptions. I WISH there was an assumed contract between a blogger and their audience. I like to *think* that I have created such a space where what little audience I have feels that what I present is honest and real, but there's no way as an audience member that *I* assume that the blogger/ vlogger I'm viewing has done the same. I don't think this makes me someone who lacks trust, I think this makes me a conscientous consumer. I take what I see at face value and if it ellicits an emotional response--then that's what it does. I rather hope that it does. I said real, not truthful, factual, or non-fiction, because I think something like Chasing Windmills, while explicitly fictional, hits at truths and is real in its way. Perhaps because it is honest about being fiction. The contract between a blogger and audience is no more nor less than that between any two people-- it's a social contract that, by an large, you and I won't try to deceive each other. Not legally binding, but socially binding. I inherently want to believe that what people report as having happened to them, when they report it in a diary-like format, is true. If they indicate it's non-factual, then I assume that there's a core to the idea that somehow speaks to them, or that it's the product of some source of creativity. Look, I don't think a sense of community would stop someone from posting the kind of material that this guy posted. In fact, if it had instead been someone from this list, someone we all knew who posted this, and called it an experiment or called it--look out!-- art there would be a lot less outcry about it. It may have even gotten heaped with praise and called innovative. This wasn't BS: this was an assignment. I think this was BS. My point was not that Kevin would have hesitated to do this because of a sense of community or sense of belonging (though given what Jen has said about how her students don't perceive their audience, perhaps he would have). My point is that he didn't have some lesson to learn by posting it, unless he has never ever been in an online community before-- these stupid hoaxes crop up frequently, in one place or another. And when it WAS someone from this list last year, a lot of people (myself included) cried foul. And yes, a lot of people cried art, too, but my personal opinion of it was art ranks that excuse somewhere around it was a joke. Anyway, I again want to thank Jen for dispelling this FAST, because it makes a huge difference in how much impact it has on perceptions of Kevin and his work. Of course, Kevin's been invited to join this list, and he may be hesitant or defensive about doing so. Hopefully, he won't take all this talk too personally-- after all, the student we're talking about right now is no more real to us than the boy we saw die on film. The Internet is the great dehumanizer, isn't it? Here's what Kevin has going for him in terms of this community: 1) He doesn't seem to have set out to deceive anyone except the hapless visitors to his vlog. He didn't promo the video here or hype his death movie. 2) Jen posted QUICKLY to dispel the idea of his death, so the speculation did not get out of hand. 3) We've all been young and foolish. Or old and foolish. In any case, should he decide to join this community, I doubt he's going to get cold-shouldered just because of this particular stunt (see item #1 for the main reason why). 4) His production values of his work are decent, and we can all appreciate well-edited videos. 5) A sizeable handful of people respect him more for this stupid prank because they think of it as art, than they would have if he'd just posted a video showing his real life. --Stephanie -- Stephanie Bryant [EMAIL PROTECTED] Blogs, vlogs, and audioblogs at: http://www.mortaine.com/blogs YAHOO! I hope this doesn't sound like too stupid of a question, but I want to make sure that I'm not missing something here. See, I prefer the embedded approach, because I hate popups with the passion of a thousand fiery suns. Even when I request them, I hate 'em. They are one of the worst interface implementations in existence. I do, however, have my vlog set to only show one day at a time-- it's extremely rare for me to post more than one video in a given day, so the scrolling issue just doesn't come up all that much, and I never have multiple videos start playing at once (there is one thing you have to click to play my videos-- the embedded play control... at least, until the recent garbage). I think an embed/object solution would be a very elegant way to do vlogs. Re: [videoblogging] Veoh transcoding feeds?
On 4/10/06, Charles Iliya Krempeaux [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello,This is my take on it. (And sorry, I should probably just let Andreas respond) But isn't one of the things that the CC licenses is about is re-distribution. Specifically, that re-distribution is good. And that re-hosting is just one way of accomplishing re-distribution. My CC license says nothing about re-distribution. Now, there are Creative Commons licenses that prevent modifications. But I'm pretty sure transcoding will (legally) fall under fair use regardless of what a Creative Commons license says. My CC license prohibits derivs for commercial purposes. Veoh is a commercial purpose. Ergo: no derivs for them. There are two things that Veoh did to change these videos: changed their format and therefore the quality of the video (very important part there), and excerpted them for purposes of an unlicensed sale via the proprietary download-our-viewe/become-a-member structure. It's fine to excerpt an item for purpose of sale, but not if you don't have the right to sell that item in the first place. Other than not giving attribution (and possibly by having ads on their site), Veoh didn't do anything (else) wrong in terms of the videos licensed under a Creative Commons license. Well, see, that's the thing. You're talking as if everyone has the same CC license, which they don't. Also, the presence of ads, the round of funding they just completed, and their intent to make a profit make Veoh a commercial entity. The lack of attribution is key as well-- I'm already annoyed with all my photos being stolen and used without my permission. Those are the reasons why it's not OK, in terms of MY license, for them to do what they did. --Stephanie -- Stephanie Bryant[EMAIL PROTECTED]Blogs, vlogs, and audioblogs at:http://www.mortaine.com/blogs SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Use YAHOO! And since Web Caching has held up in court, as being legal over and over again, that their caching of video is also legal. (Of course, this assumes that their software has been properly coded to act as a web cache.) That's not what they're doing, though. They take videos in common file formats and convert them to another file format (proprietary? Flash?), reposting an excerpt of the video in flash, even if the original was not in Flash. The quality of the video changes as a result of this re-encoding. That makes this not the original work being cached, but the original work being changed in two ways: * Encoded to a different file format, with possible size change and/or quality change * Excerpted for viewing on Veoh before downloading Veoh's proprietary viewer and joining their community (the community which, presumably, has helped them get funding). The excerpting might be considered fair use, if not for the fact that it's being used as a tool to sell the complete, derived/changed work without permission (I'm not really sure if the fact that these sales are for the Internet currency of ad views matters in a court of law, but I'm guessing that it does). It's fair use to excerpt a work, and it's fair use to excerpt for purposes of sale, but only if you have permission to sell that work. Changes like this are not caching. They are changing. Huge difference. Also, web caches keep the complete original web page and information: Veoh does not appear to be keeping important things like the creator's NAME and WEBSITE information on these works. While I think it's important that we all get upset about this-- after all, if we're angry about this, then we should understand better why other creators and license holders get angry over unwarranted use of their works. However, please remember that, if you posted a clip from CBS on your site, you would expect to FIRST receive a Cease and Desist letter from CBS. Veoh seems willing to comply with such requests from us. Once you have sent them such a letter, for them to continue to display your site would be problematic. The timing of Veoh's round of funding, coinciding with these 1600 or so feeds appearing in their directory, is disturbing, because it does imply some kind of monetary gain from the infringement, and it's not terribly believable (to me, anyway) that 1600 RSS feeds were manually entered by anyone, which gives the impression that Veoh has something more automated to do this. Auto-add, manual-remove? But what's even more disturbing, which was touched on earlier but hasn't really been discussed, is that this is not the first time that Veoh has had to massively apologize for poor business practices here. In August, someone scraped all the email addresses from the Videoblogging list and used them to send out Veoh spam. Dmitry was shocked and uninformed that the database had been used this way. This makes me wonder if Dmitry is really this clueless about what his people are doing, or if he's maintaining plausible deniability when it comes to his marketing team. Whatever the case, there is definitely someone in his company that does not understand ethics. That person, no matter how effective they are, needs to be reigned in. At that time, Veoh rectified the situation by wiping their database and starting over. Since they were able to do it then, I think that's why people are calling for them to do so now. By the way, the mirroring of this Yahoo! group onto google groups has basically compromised every email address of everyone participating here, which is why I kind of wish the decision to mirror had actually been discussed prior to implementation. I originally subscribed here with an email address that i knew was spam-free. Since the mirroring began, I've started receiving hundreds of spams a day, and a google search shows that google groups is the only place where this email address appears unmangled on the Internet. --Stephanie -- Stephanie Bryant[EMAIL PROTECTED]Blogs, vlogs, and audioblogs at: http://www.mortaine.com/blogs SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Use YAHOO! My Sony Handicam takes Hi8 and Digital8. To get the Hi-8 tapes onto the hard drive, I put them in the Handicam and import in iMovie like normal, via firewire. Re: [videoblogging] How Much Time Do You Spend Editing?
I use iMovie, and I reuse my outro every post. When it's just me, talking-head-style, it takes me about 10 minutes to edit, and half of that is importing the video to iMovie. The Toastmaster speeches are about the same, because there's no transitions or anything, just a straight shot, then cut. For more complex stuff, like the CBSBettas vlog, or Hiking and Camping with Johnnyb, it takes me a couple of hours to sift through the footage (usually more than an hour for each vlog) and narrow it down to the 7 minutes or so that I want to post, apply transitions, etc. If I want music, that adds a LOT of time, because I'm not up on the creative commons scene, and therefore when I think this should have music! the music I think of that would be perfect is usually restricted. I used to vlog daily. I now vlog about once a week for my personal vlog, and just about monthly for the CBS and Johnnyb vlogs (though they've been delayed due to book-writing). --Stephanie On 4/7/06, Monique Danielle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm curious abouthow much times folks spend editing and what programs they use? Veoh has my whole feed in their service. They have ripped my videos to their formats and are re-distributing them, using their own permalinks. From their own TOS: As explained above, Veoh does not permit copyright infringing activities on the Veoh Service and reserves the right to terminate access to the Veoh Service, and remove all User Materials posted, by any persons who are found to be repeat infringers (i.e., persons found to have uploaded copyright infringing User Material on more than two occasions). Here's the email I sent them: Dear Veoh, You are infringing on my license terms for Hold My Beer and Watch This! (http://mortaine.blogspot.com). I have a creative commons license on my videoblog. My license terms are derivs-ok, non-commercial, and must-attribute. This means that if you make a derivative work by ripping my videos to your format for re-distribution, it must be for non-commercial purposes. From what I can see, Veoh is a commercial entity. If this is not the case, please send me your 501c status documentation. However, you are still violating the must-attribute portion of my videoblog's license, and that is not acceptable. You are displaying my work on your website without attribution to the creator. Please create a clear, unambiguous link-back to my website. Personally, I would prefer it if you made the permalink space on your site as a permalink to the vlog entries on my blog site. It's not as if you don't have that data available, and doesn't seem like it would be too technically difficult. Failure to comply with my CC license means that you are infringing on my copyright, something that is specifically prohibited in the Veoh Terms of Service. Actually, they're outright infringing on my husband's videoblog. For those who don't know, my husband is a VERY private person. It took all my wheedling to get him to agree to be videotaped while hiking. Getting him to release it under a CC license was a no-go. So, his is cc-0, 100% copyrighted. No derivs, no usage, etc. It's on blip, so blip gets to list and host the content, but that's it. Taking it and attributing it-- still not OK for his. Veoh's ripped it and posted it. I doubt there are many of us who can honestly say we've absolutely never done an infringing videoblog, though most of us have learned better and have developed a better sense of these nuances. I will personally make sure that anyone that wants their feed off of our system gets a quick response to their wishes. I *do* need to ask you to remove http://johnnyb.blip.tv from Veoh, if you haven't already. How many feeds and directories did you submit you site to? I don't remember. I did them in batches. 6. How else do you promote your vlog? .sig file, and on my professional website. Re: [videoblogging] FireAnt Windows Vs. FireAnt Mac
They work the same. I find FireAnt Mac to be easier but that's mainly because it's more familiar (there are some things that drive me batty about it, just as there are some things in FireAnt Windows that drive me batty). They are both well-supported. I typically get a response within 24 hours if I have a question or concern, and they are both being actively developed. I assume you're asking because you have a Windows and a Mac and don't know which one to use for watching vlogs. Here's a tip: Windows Media Player is no longer supported on the Mac. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Week of Vlogging Dangerously/VlogWeek2006
The sign up thing is just so I can add a list of vlogs to an RSS feed. Yes, it'd be great if everyone tagged their videos. I volunteered to collect everyone's videoblogs into one place so we could all watch them. You don't have to sign up. It's optional, like the dangerously part is optional or, for that matter, tagging is optional. On 4/3/06, Andy Carvin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Please add me to the list. But rather than asking people to announce themselves and sign up, wouldn't it suffice to just have everyone tag their videos for technorati, then collect a list of contributors from that? Monique, there are other dangerous ideas you can do, ones that aren't risky for your business or reputation. Re: [videoblogging] New (non Verdi/Ryanne) Video Book out?
What I know is what Amazon has listed. I mentioned on-list that I hope the authors drop me a line, since I know some book reviewers. I will admit that I probably shouldn't have replied to Ron's message, or should have replied privately, because I was actually upset over something completely unrelated at the time and unable to just drop it. But then this vitriol. Anyway, I've had to cut out a lot of my initial reaction to this-- the last paragraph will explain why. Stephanie, You are the epitomy of hipocracy... You potray me to be some evil martketeer, yet you are marketing a product that anybody with half a brain could figure out for free. It's a for Dummies book. If the folks reading it wanted to figure it out by digging around the Internet, they would, and in many cases do anyway. But they also would like to have someone else dig around for it and print the information for them in a handy package. I don't hold a lot of illusions about my book, here. It's not Hemingway, for god's sake. I sure it will make a wonderful refence three years from now when every point in the book is moot. Computer books don't have a long shelf life. That's not really news. While I am on the subject of your useless banter... who died and left you boss of this group? Who asked you to determine what this group is, what it likes and dislikes? The difference between spam and not spam... it is all YOUR opinion you have no right to speak for a group of over 2000... [Careful, Jason. Godwin is watching] I believe in the post to which you are replying, I even said I do not personally have a problem with... Actually, I think there's only one point where I didn't preface my comment by stating that it was my opinion, but since the previous remark had been stated as opinion, I figured it was obvious. By the way, I believe we both have supporters here. I'm sure you've been emailed privately with as many hang in there''s, as I've received go get 'em's, so perhaps neither of us can claim to speak for more than ourselves? your book is probably great... and on impulse I probably would have bought it, I certainly would veer completely in the opposite direction... at this point I might even burn it on site. Well, books aren't sacred. Actually, I secretly hope you hold a great big book-burning party for it. I could use the press. Oh and for the record, I emailed Steve Garfield from his vlog long before I knew he was even a member here or who any members here were to be honest. As stated earlier: I'm sorry I even mentioned that. I did not, however, feel it necessary to drag Steve into this by name. Thanks to those who understand, and a big fuck you to those who offend or are offended, I am just tired of this shit and want to move on. Then move on already. I should have vlogged this... by the way hold my beer while I go vomit, I'll be back in a moment. Yeah, you probably should have vlogged it. That would have been interesting. Not unique, but interesting. Jason, I will make you a deal, if you've even read this far, and I'm going to ask that everyone else who's engaged you adversarially in this discussion to consider the same deal. I'm going to stick to posting about vlogweek more or less until after the 9th. And I won't reply to anything you say, and you won't reply to anything I say (erm, though if you're in vlogweek, let's just keep it civil), for a 10 day cooling off period (of course you could reply to this, cause I know you want the last word and anyway, how can you accept a truce if you don't reply?). I know I, for one, would rather cool off and come back and meet on less hostile footing in a week and a half than have to muddle through more flamewars. --Stephanie -- Stephanie Bryant [EMAIL PROTECTED] Blogs, vlogs, and audioblogs at: http://www.mortaine.com/blogs Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: VLOGGERS UNITE
On 4/2/06, Ron Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Interesting thread.Something that drives me crazy about this group is that there is some serious confusion about what is and is not spam. When someone posts about a vlog they are proud of, some people tend to think that it is spam. I actually apologized for spamming the group when I posted a piece that I was proud of (thanks for the feedback for all of you that viewed and reviewed it). I think that is a problem. I do not personally have a problem with: * An introduction post the first time someone puts up their videoblog * A wow this was tough/fun/interesting when there's something GENUINELY cool about a recent vlog they posted. * A post introducing a videoblogging-related product or service. These annoy me if they are the only thing the person posts, however; learn to contribute. I do have a problem with: * A post every day or so with the same information posted yesterday. Namely check out my vlog. Hey, if we didn't go see it yesterday, what makes you think today is different? * A post EVERY TIME someone posts a vlog entry. Sorry-- each individual vlog is probably not that unique. Cool and important to you, sure. But not enough to post every time you update. This isn't a notification list. * People who use this group as an experiment in their marketing plans. I can go on and on about experimentation in marketing, but the fact is, Jason either lied about that, or is a very unethical marketer. I think we know the latter is true, at least. There's a very limited set of cases where it's ethical to experiment on a group without their knowledge or permission. This isn't one of them. * People who also privately email individual members of the group to ask them why they haven't come to look at their vlogs. From email I have received, Jason may have done this, as well, basically using the videoblogging group as a source for email addresses to follow-up with his marketing garbage. I do agree that RSS is not a promotional tool per se, in the sense that it doesn't get more people to see your vlog. However, RSS makes it easier to get your vlog into certain search and index sites. I notice that most of the people who responded with angst in this thread have pretty good name recognition within this community. I am not attacking anyone, but I think that those of you who are established Vloggers don't really see the problems for getting exposure for a new Vlog. This is very, very true. The core vloggers will, whether they like it or not, be seen as cliqueish as more videobloggers enter the vlogging world. That's not who they are, and not what they're about-- in fact, it's hard to find a more enthusiastic, engaging, and inclusive group of folks in the high tech world. But the nature of group dynamics is such that this is a nearly-inevitable side effect of becoming the experts. Exposure for vlogs is a problem, and it gets bigger everyday. Those problems are compounded when, in a group about video blogging, asking for people to check out your vlog is spam. It's not spam. It's spam when it's every 12 hours. Oh yea, we just signed the paperwork for our new dog training studio, boutique and art gallery. snarkI will be posting video soon, and if it is good enough I will 'spam' the group with the info, mainly in the hopes that local vlogging hero Josh Leo will watch it and come out and vlog about it. Then maybe all of you will get a chance to see our new place. /snark See, I don't see this as spammy at all, because you contributed valuable thoughts and perspective to the discussion. There *has* to be a high signal-to-noise ratio on this list, or it will collapse. --Stephanie -- Stephanie Bryant[EMAIL PROTECTED]Blogs, vlogs, and audioblogs at:http://www.mortaine.com/blogs SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Use YAHOO! [videoblogging] Week of Vlogging Dangerously/VlogWeek2006
The Week of Vlogging Dangerously/Vlog Week 2006 OK, I realize it's already tomorrow in some parts of the world, so let's get started! A lot of folks contributed time, space, announcements... it's turning into a bit of a hodge-podge of leadership. Nonetheless, I said I'd compile stuff, and I am doing so. DATES: April 3-9 Monday through Sunday. Post a vlog each day for all 7 days. If you come in late, post a vlog each day and maybe catch up on the weekend. If you stop vlogging halfway through the week, catch up on the weekend. No excuses! BLOG: http://videobloggingweek2006.blogspot.com Not sure if this is just announcements or videos. Steve? BANNERS: http://michaelverdi.com/vbw06 http://vlogmatic.com/vbweek2006.htm TAGGING: It will make the project much easier if you tag your videos, at *least* with a Technorati tag. Peter and Devlon: can we set up a (public?) Mefeedia feed with the listed participants as the to be watched list? Is that possible? If so, then folks could tag them themselves while watching in Mefeedia, and it would set up the RSS feed quickly for me (another vlogger's helpfully given a possible space for the public feed as well). On Technorati: http://technorati.com/tag/videobloggingweek2006 To tag your video, add this to your post: a href=http://technorati.com/tag/videobloggingweek2006; rel=tag videobloggingweek2006/a [Yes, there are a gazillion ways to do this. This is one of them.] If you like, you could also add a vloggingdangerously tag, if you're specifically taking risks this week for your vlog. On MeFeedia; http://mefeedia.com/tags/videobloggingweek2006/ To tag your video: Sign in to Mefeedia.com Subscribe to your own feed. Go to Watch to view your video queue. Click a video in your queue. Click Tag this to tag the video. Type videobloggingweek2006 in the field and click the TAG! button. Add yourself to Eyespot: http://eyespot.com/groups/videobloggingweek2006 [I'm not sure what the value is to this; if you don't add yourself this week, is it OK to do so next week?] DANGEROUS! During the week, I'll email the dangerous ideas to the list. Everyone is welcome to contribute suggestions. No one is required to follow any of the dangerous suggestions, or even to vlog dangerously. You determine for yourself what is danger. The idea is to take a risk of some kind with your vlog. Perhaps that's a risk that you take personally and then videoblog, or perhaps it's a risk that you take involving your vlog. First dangerous idea, inspired by Naked Verdi and others: Vlog your daily shower or bath. How much you show or don't is up to you. If you vlog yourself x-rated, PLEASE provide some kind of disclaimer. Cause, you know, some people have small children or weak stomaches. ;) CURRENT PARTICIPANTS: We'll have a single page feed for all of these, as soon as it's set up (working on it). If you're participating but absolutely don't want to be in a web-based feed, let me know. Also, please check to make sure you are listed and I have your videoblog's URL and your name spelled correctly. If I missed you, it was not a deliberate slight, so speak up, please. Feel free to subscribe to it. There's even an email subscription option. I will never abandon this group, and this is not an alternative to it, it is the marketeing side of it for all vloggers... I don't think you know anything about Internet marketing. If you did, you would know the difference between a discussion group and an audience for spam. On SEO and optimization.. I do not need a website or books, please humor me... I do work in this area, not just hokey doke stuff... I have large clients... Campaigns I manage spend over $20,000 per month. Every person in this group is an early adopter for technology. They are NOT the people you typically market to. Your ignorance of that simple premise has resulted in you shooting yourself in the foot. LASTLY...whew... I plan on building a website list of vlogs... TV with channels. There are many lists on the web, but there are better ways to do things... This site will cater to daily shows... and will be marketed heavily in this new group. It will also be developed so people can find what the're looking for... blog video is the hot keyword today, maybe it will be vodcast tomorrow, either way thats what people search to watch vlogs. It would be nice if we could all post it ourselves on the same blog... I know it possible to program WordPress to create accounts, but I don't know if you can do joint posts on blogspot... anyone know? Like videoblogging week 2004 and videoblogging week 2005 you just post video on your own blog. Through the wonder of the web people will be able to follow all the videos through tagging services. Just tag your video videobloggingweek2006 at technorati and everyone will be able to follow along. To tag a post for videoblogging week at technorati paste the below into your blog post: a href="" href="http://technorati.com/tag/videobloggingweek2006" target="_blank" >http://technorati.com/tag/videobloggingweek2006 rel=tagvideobloggingweek2006/a Pure magic!Don't forget to tag in mefeedia as well I guess that means I'm in (only problem is that I'm really busy! I wish this wasn't so last minute!!!), Last minute? Pfft. :o)That makes it more fun, spur of the moment! OK, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, we lose an hour. (Fall back: set the clock back by 1 hour, thereby gaining an extra hour. Spring forward: set the clock forward an hour, thereby skipping an hour of the day.) --Stephanie On 3/29/06, David Howell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Gain an hour. Fall back...Spring ahead.
