If it's a known file type like an mp3, your iPhone will just play it. If
it's a text file, iPhone should just read it. Well, I think I have an app
to read text files and create them but that should get you started.

in the two divices beyond a larger screen? given the latest stuff I'm not
sure if IPads are still produced or if iPad mini and iPad air

The iPad is most definitely being produced, you can still buy an iPad 2
which would be your least expensive full-size iPad which means it has a 9.7
inch screen.
The new iPad Air still has the same 9.7 inch screen, but it is thinner,
smaller because there isn't as much around the screen
