Re: Bare Minimum to Talk to Siri?
Siri will go through whichever network is available, so wifi plenty good. Cell if not around wifi. wifi of less than 4mbps is hardly broadband at all. If cell data can handle it, than wifi should. An iPad with cell data would be a big jump in price, but could go anywhere, and still have wifi capability anyway. Just a wifi model would be cheaper, but still require user to buy a wifi router, or trust a public service of some kind. Not to be recommended. Broadband service providers usually provide the wifi gismo as that is the thing these days. I always thought Siri came through the cell service so is that required to be able to use it? Can you engage Siri with an iPad and wi-fi? What would be the minimum amount of wi-fi service required to do this? Thanks for any assistance in helping me climb this learning curve. Re: My First 48 Hours with the RII Mini Bluetooth Keyboard
I wonder if this RII mini keyboard supports swedish keyboard layout since it is different from the american/english one? Does the documentation or web site if any say anything about that? It could be interesting to know although i'm actually against using keyboards other than the on-screen one, it's yet another clumsy device to carry with me. At least my policy is to thoroughly learn and use the on-screen keyboard before getting an external one, otherwise you risk to get smoked so to speak if the battery of the keyboard runs out in the middle of nowhere. Anyways this is beside the point. /Krister 11 aug 2014 kl. 07:28 skrev M. Has anyone had experience with Jabra Rox Wireless bluetooth headphones?
If the headphones do not work for you, you could try the Afterfshokz Bluez which are designed for people who have hearing aids as the pads sit on your cheeks rather than your ears as the sound is conducted through your cheeks. It takes a while to get use to. Best of luck with what you have now. Kawal. On 11 Aug 2014, at 01:39 am, Teresa Christian synergydra...@gmail.com wrote: Hi gang, I'll put the bottom line on the first line, lol. First problem- Has anyone had experience with the Jabra Rox headphones? details of the problem are below. Second question; how do you put the phone icon back on the screen? this problem is due to the first problem. A week ago I went to the Apple store and purchased a set of Jabra Rox Wireless bluetooth headphones. They have fabulous sound for music and the way they are physically is great. They are like large earbuds. The part that sits in your ear bowl is big enough that they stay in my ears very well. I have a hard time because I have little ears and also ware hearing aids. I tried the Plantronics bluetooth voyager both the legacy and the pro. I love what they do but they just don't fit my ears so have continued looking and found these Jabras. Briefly here is what they look like. just a cable going between the two ear pieces with an inline remote with mike. This seems to work very well with my small ears and hearing aid situation. The cable goes behind your neck. I like the flexability of this rather than ridgid ones. Also the backs of the ear parts stick together magnetically and this also starts and stops some functions. So when they are not in your ears they stick together on your chest like a neckless. Another slick thing is that the back of one of the ear bud piece pulls away and that is where the charger cable plugs in. Here is the problem and this is a big one. They are not very responsive when it comes to moving my finger around on the iPhone touch screen. Because of this dificulty I in advertantly removed the phone icon from the bottom line of my phone. So the up shot is I have two questions. Has anyone had experience with this and is there a solution or will I have to return these and keep looking? I love these except for this one problem. Second: how do I put the phone icon back on to my screen? Thanks for any help! ☺ Teresa, headset hunter -- It is action, not mere intention, that leaves our mark on the day. Hi, You might like to try Fleksy VO (the VO being for voiceOver), free, from the App Store. It mimics most of the keys of a QWERTY keyboard on the phone screen, and produces click sounds in responds to key presses. then there are More... tabs, with Numbers, letters, Symbols, etc. it's fast. RE: My First 48 Hours with the RII Mini Bluetooth Keyboard
I have not seen this, but I would suggest you check out the Braille Pen Slim. This is a Braille keys keyboard. I have been using the BP12 recently, and while the display is smaller than I want, it has been a delight using the Braille for input. I am a very proficient typist and had been very good Braillist, too, but not used Braille over the past 25 years or so; not much, anyway. It was like riding a bicycle. RE: My iPad shuts off while I am using it
I have found that my battery life is horrible if I have say 10 apps open and I am using IOS 7. I generally close them all down each morning before I leave for work, yesterday I did not even think of it as I had not really used the phone much on Saturday and by 11 in the morning I was at 70% received two messages, replied to one of them with only one word. No phone calls,. When I got home I looked and every store app I have was open along with Bard and a couple of others. I closed them all out, and hopefully today it won't plummet so much. I am still on my 4S, contract is up but . In iOS7 especially, Apple manages everything so you never need to close apps manually unless you need to restart a specific app. Generally, you can leave your App Switcher alone and things will work fine. I never clear out apps, unless I know one is going to suck down battery and I don't need it, and my iPhone never locks on me. Try the restart and let us know if that fixes the problem. Since I haven’t seen anybody else post about this, I thought I let everybody know that Microsoft is now offering a whopping 1 Tb of storage with a Office 365 Home subscription which costs $99 per year. The subscription also entitles you to download and install a full version of Office 2013 on up to 5 computers and if you set up accounts for up to 5 family members under that subscription each person actually gets 1 Tb of storage for a total of 5 Tb of storage. The OneDrive app on the iPhone is very accessible and offers many of the same features as Dropbox does including camera roll backup, music and video file playback etc. Even spending $99 a year (just $8.25 a month) for 1 Tb of storage is pretty attractive, but you also get full use of Office 2013 on up to 5 devices. RE: NFL Mobile and other apps
I agree, Cheryl. And you are absolutely right. It is because of the NFL. They are cutting off these stations as they find them. As I said before, my favorite team is the Eagles, and last time I tried all football radio, I was not able to get any station to give me the Eagles broadcasts. Sure, I could possibly have listened to the opposing team's broadcast, but first of all, that is no guarantee, and second, it was worth it to me to pay the money so I could hear the broadcasters I really wanted to hear, in a reliable manner. I don't have time in my life to sit there trying station after station and then having them be cut off and doing the whole thing over again. Especially since, though it is cheaper, you do still pay for the app you need to use to access all these feeds. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Cheryl Homiak Sent: Monday, August 11, 2014 12:01 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: NFL Mobile and other apps I have paid for audiopass and the way to use this on a mobile device is via NFL mobile. Maybe this has changed, but it was my understanding that part of what causes feeds not to be available on other apps is that the NFL and/or other teams try to stop feeds from being available for use by other apps; maybe my information is out-of-date and this is no longer the case but I do know that when there was no other way to listen on an i-device and I used these feeds, it was sometimes frustrating looking for a working feed and they were sometimes then cut off in mid-broadcast. I have no desire to use these other apps at this point though I am glad they are available for those who want to or need to use them. But if what started as an NFL mobile thread is going to now become a discussion of other football apps, , could people at least maybe change the subject line to reflect this? Have you had her make sure the mute switch is off? It's right above the volume buttons; slide it up or down whichever way it will go, and see if that fixes things. I have only made a short call to my home number, and voicemail quality wasn't too bad. Does anyone have experience to compare/contrast the two services. It does appear TAT will be more expensive for my purposes, which are primarily for calling chat lines where you may be on line for a length of time per session. I am not even sure there is any restriction on those calls. I was able to make one for a few minutes. Any suggestions will be most appreciated. As I said, my primary use is to party lines using WIFI. I used one of the apps that was discussed here a few weeks ago. It was the 1500 ring tones free app. i downloaded them and did file sharing in itunes and got the tones on my phone. I wanted to change the new mail alert sound that I have so I went in to settings and selected the one I wanted. The problem is that the old alert keeps playing. Re: Light indicator app
It sounds like the Seeing Assistant app will do what you need, but I thought I'd mention Light Detector as well. It turns light into sound: the more ambient light you have, the more high-pitched the sound is. It may not be accurate for pinpointing specific light sources, but I find it handy for indicating how bright a room is. Re: Dumb iBooks question
That doesn't usually happen under normal circumstances. You might try removing the app from your app switcher, and if that doesn't work, reboot your device. Are you reading a pdf or an epub file? Re: NFL Mobile
That's what happens for Green Bay. They always seemed to either not even stream the game, or it went out sometimes near the end of the first quarter, sometimes close to half time, it kind of varried, but the main station here doesn't let that stream continue all the way in either event. - Original Message - From: Arnold Schmidt arno...@mindspring.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, August 10, 2014 5:40 PM Subject: Re: NFL Mobile Unless they have relented, and probably not, the NFL really tried to crack down on stations streaming NFL games. I remember listening to a stream of a game, and having the station cut it off in the middle of a play, when they realized somebody was listening to it. Around Wisconsin, I think they reduced the quality, at least over FM, for some reason. I first noticed it on the Brewer games, although it seems that Bob Ueker's voice artifacts less than the commercials or other people talking. For whatever reason, the guys on the Packers' post game revealed it more, and those games would've been on different stations. I wonder if they are starting to make the stream better than over the air so people buy it, or if they reduced the bit rate of what the stations get for some technical reason, or to reduce their cost in distributing it? - Original Message - From: Andy Baracco w...@socal.rr.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, August 10, 2014 10:12 PM Subject: Re: NFL Mobile I have used all Football Radio for a few years now. Getting out of list of PDF files in iBooks
Greetings all. I opened iBooks this weekend to read some more in one of the books I had purchased. I found myself in a list of PDF files. The last time I had opened iBooks, I had mistakenly chosen to open a PDF file within iBooks. I will not do that again. Anyway, I can't get back to my library of already purchased books. Closing the app and reopening it has not done any good. Does anyone have any suggestions? Using latest iBooks on an iPhone 5. Weird issue editing recurring appointments in Fantastical 2
Greetings. I had a weird issue pop up last week when trying to edit a recurring event in Fantastical 2. This has never happened before. I opened an appointment from a recurring series with the intent of editing the appointment, setting its start time an hour later than all other appointments. After I had done this and double tapped Done, I got the usual message about changing this appointment or all future appointments in the series. After I double tapped to change this appointment only button, I was told by the app that the entire series had been deleted and there were no appointments left to change, and then put back in my list of appointments. I setup the series again and tried to modify the start time twice more, with the same error. Can anyone recreate this? Is it a bug? Granted, the number of times I will have to change a single appointment's start time are few and far between. I was still concerned when my whole series was deleted after I chose to apply the change to the single appointment. Using latest Fantastical 2 on an iPhone 5. Re: Bluetooth keyboard commands with voiceover
Hi, Shawn, The keyboard command for copying last-spoken text to the clipboard is VO-shift-C. The best place to find VO keystrokes is in the user manual. There's a section called using Voiceover with an Apple Wireless keyboard. Most of those are applicable to third-party keyboards. You can turn quick-nav off with the two side arrow keys pressed at the same time, and toggle it on the same way. This way you can use command-shift-arrows to select text. This mostly works in editable text areas, but you can use the VO-shift-C option in Safari. Hank On 8/10/2014 5:44 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Hello Listers, I know the topic of cloud/online storage often comes up on the list. Since I haven't seen anybody else post about this, I thought I let everybody know that Microsoft is now offering a whopping 1 Tb of storage with a Office 365 Home subscription which costs $99 per year. Advocating for VO Accessibility
It in interesting to me that even when I contact the apple accessibility telephone number, I have to explain the apps that I am asking for help with accessing. Two recent examples are the Bard mobile app and the nfb Newsline app. In the case of the nfb Newsline app, the only way that I could locate this app to download to my iPad was to use the link from the nfb Newsline website. Searching both iTunes Store and the App Store brought up other results from nfb beside Newsline. In my opinion, the more you write or call anyone associated with the technology you need will be beneficial. It may not help as I found repeatedly calling customer service from audible, but at least the more voices that are heard, the better. My assumption, and I hope that I am wrong, as someone who became visually impaired as an adult, is that you need to advocate and explain everything you need from technology at a very basic level to be understood by the sighted community, even from places which make technology which is supposed to be accessible. Also remember that not everyone is a wiz at technology and not everyone picks up these skills quickly, especially if they are unfamiliar with navigating the world without much or any sight. Re: This Accessory May Not Be Supported
Well, I've had my lightning cable sense I got my iPhone 5s on October 20, 2013 so it's just months short of a year. I got my iPad Air in January of this year. Both cables are still in perfect condition. I too take very good care of my equipment and cables and connectors. Even when I traveled on the road with a band I did the same thing. I guess when it comes to cables and connectors I just hate to have to buy another one if I can at all help it. I did buy an extra lightening cable though as a backup. It's still in it's packaging it came in. I never opened it up. Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2014! Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your stupid parents? Act now! Move out. Get a job. However, I'm now starting to get it from time to time when charging using the Apple cable that came with my iPhone. I'm curious with what others have experienced with their Apple cables and how long they've lasted. I take extremely good care of my stuff almost to the point of being OCD so I'm concerned that this message is starting to occur too frequently. Re: Advocating for VO Accessibility
The bard mobile app is easy to locate I agree. The nfb Newsline was not, for me, when I searched nfb or national federation of the blind in the iTunes Store and the App Store. What was surprising to me was that these apps were not familiar to the people who answered the apple accessibility phone line. Apparently I misunderstood the point of the original poster in that he is looking for advice regarding speaking with developers, not individual stories of frustration with dealing with customer service for the accessibility device providers. So please disregard my earlier post. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Hi,Since this thread has been a long one, I am not sure if someone previously responded to this issue, but to hear AudioPass games, you need to do the following:When you know that an NFL game is live, navigate to schedule. Tap on this. The app screen will refresh and you will see the games currently playing. Tap on the listen link. If you are logged in, the game should start playing, provided that you have subscribed to AudioPass via the PC. You can not subscribe to Field Pass through the NFL Mobile app. The following link will take you to the page where you can subscribe, then listen on the pc. It uses flash for listening on the pc, so I don't know what would happen if you tried to listen on a Mac. You allegedly can link this field pass account to your NFL Mobile app. I did this last year, this year, I couldn't get that far. I just checked, and in my opinion, the pricing for Field Pass definitely is going in the wrong direction, $29.95 through January 9, or $39.95 through the end of the season. I got it through the end of the season for $29.95, I guess, because I subscribed last year, they probably will hit me up for the $39.95 one next year. Re: NFL Mobile
I subscribed to NFL AudioPass on my PC, but I'm pretty sure you can also subscribe to it through an in app purchase on the NFL Mobile App. 1) If you bring up the NFL Mobile App, you can double tap on the menu button at the top of the screen. 2) Now double tap on the Schedules button. I find this by sliding my finger down the left hand side of the screen. Swiping doesn't always seem to get me there. 3) Double tap on the game you want to hear. 4) Double tap on the Replay button, and you'll be asked if you want to purchase an in app subscription for NFL AudioPass. Note that last season you could only use the NFL Mobile App to listen to currently streaming games. I'm not sure if this has changed this season or not. On your PC, you can listen to any games, current or past, for the current season. Hi, Alan, I just recently acquired an iPhone case with a battery charger in it and it's really neat. However, from time to time, I also get that error message with that. I can't remember the brand name of this case, but a lot of the time I have to press the charge button on the case to activate the charge again. However, I turned Bluetooth off tonight and I got the phone to give me a full charge in the case. I don't know if that has anything to do with the error message or not. I know someone who has the same case as I, but I don't know if he had ever gotten the same message. Esther Levegnale Sent from Esther's Amazing iPhone! Re: Advocating for VO Accessibility
To my way of thinking, Apple *facilitates accessibility in third-party apps, and not all of the reps at the accessibility service number will necessarily know all of the specific blindness-related apps. this is not to say that they shouldn't be familiarized with them to some extent. However, making accessibility available in a mainstream product is somewhat new territory. I would fully expect the folks at apple accessibility to be familiar with the apps built into iO s, such as Mail, Calendar, and Safari. There are many, many third-party apps, and I'm afraid the specific blindness-related ones like Seeing Assistant, Bard, and NFB Newsreader will be lost in the shuffle for the most part. I look at it this way: how many average blind folks know about switching devices for iOS, to be used by quadruplegics using mouth controls? Accessibility is always an education process. For example, i have experienced some hearing loss, but not to the extent that hearing aids are required. When hearing aids become necessary for me, I will definitely need to learn a lot about the use of them with iOS. Icould be learning now, as well. I know for a fact as a former access tech trainer that some trainers specialized in certain types of accessibility. RE: Advocating for VO Accessibility
I recently called Apple Accessibility line for help with an encrypted backup. I was told that I’d been referred to a “Senior advisor”, or some such. Later, I was shunted to someone else. Both of these Apple Accessibility geniuses kept telling me to “Go Down” or “Just below that”, even though I told them I was blind, a VoiceOver user, and using “the screenreader JAWS on my PC”. They were very patient and, ultimately, helpful, but I was very surprised they didn’t seem to have a working concept of screenreader fundamentals, including TAB navigation. I’ve had better experiences in the past. I guess a lot depends upon with whom you get on the other end of the line. Re: Advocating for VO Accessibility
I have been advocating for increased technology access for 25 years now. In the process, I have piled up a number of advocacy successes from talking ATMs by the biggest banks to accessible audio interfaces of voting machines to audio description at movie theaters. I have been a moving force that has aided in securing this access on scores of projects for hundreds of thousands of blind and disabled people. Starting last year, I began advocating for accessible apps. In the world of apps, most apps are not produced in a way that would fall under the jurisdiction of the Americans with disabilities Act or other disability policies put in place in the past 50 years. Therefore, I found that personal appeal and persuasion are necessary and most successful. I always e-mail. I describe who I am, my station in life and how the app is useful or would be potentially useful to me. I describe the barriers with VoiceOver in clear and detailed language. I also explain how VO is built into every iPhone so validating the problem and replicating it is simple. I conclude my message by stating specifically the problems I want corrected. I refer folks to the Apple Usability guidelines and the section that spells out the issue in question if the problem is not obvious. The communication to the developer is clear and complete and not like a series of 140 character one-liners like those seen on Twitter. Re: NFL Mobile
Thanks much but this wasn't the issue most people were having. The issue was that the app wasn't providing us a place to sign in where it was supposed to be or anywhere else that we could find. So several of us reinstalled which did allow us to log in to our audiopass subscription but then didn't allow us to choose a favorite team but just assigned one. And I am still concerned because while I was able to log in I am not sure whether the app is still showing my audiopass subscription now. Also, for the person who was unable to find the way to subscribe, it should be in settings, though the path through schedule during a game may also provide you with a way to subscribe. I think this pretty much summarizes what has been discussed about NFL Mobile besides the fact that it is no longer a Verizon-only app. Also, it is my understanding that once you subscribe to audiopass, you can use it on your device or computer or wherever; the wording below suggests that the audiopass subscription through the NFL Mobile app is just for your iOS device but at least as far as I can tell there is no subscription that is limited to the iOS device. Subscriptions from the iOS device, the PC or Mac computer or anything else out there that can connect to the Internet and do the subscription applies to anything you want to listen on that is supported though I think you can only log in and listen on one at a time. -- Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. Re: Amazon Fire TV
I purchased the Amazon Fire TV media device. It is not at all accessible nor useable. I bought it for my wife and it's a great media box for those who can navigate by seeing the TV screen for menus. But, nothing is spoken so there's no way of selecting functions, selecting from among search results, etc. HTH, Jeff At 11:50 AM 8/11/2014, you wrote: Hi Everyone, I received an advertisement for the Amazon Fire TV this morning. According to the info I read, voice recognition will be built into the remote. My understanding is user's will be able to use the voice recognition feature to find movies and other content available through the remote. Has anyone purchased this yet? What do you think?
