Re: Superfast charging Battery was: The iCloud Keychain, I Think I'm Beginning to Like It

2014-08-23 Thread RobH.
A different techy might correct me, but chargers deliver different ampage
levels for different size devices. The device will take whatever ampage it
can handle, or all there is, if that is less.
So, an iPhone is only going to take what it needs, the rest is superfluous
and unused. The Apple iPhone chargers should provide the max the iPhone can
take, cheaper ones probably less, and thus device would charge slower on
those. That then means that device would charge faster when higher ampage
is available, but not by as much as one might think.

I.e: if an iPhone charger can give 2amps; and an iPad charger offer 5amps,
you can't and shouldn't expect the iPhone to charge in less than half the
time off the iPad charger.
Those multi-charger units you can buy are the same except they can give
10-20amps, and have several usb slots to connect your devices to.

Anybody to clarify or contradict this?

Perhaps I am just being paranoid, but I wonder if one uses a more powerful
charger than was designed for the battery more than occasionally, such as an
iPad charger to charge an iPhone, wouldn't it shorten the life of the
battery? Being that I am told that it costs almost a hundred dollars to get
the battery replaced in an iPhone, I don't want it to go bad any sooner than

If you're looking forr a fast charging method, I have heard from a
friend that has several chargers that an iPad charger will charge the
phone's battery in about an hour. Granted, the iPad charger is
normally used to charge a much larger tablet than the iPhone, but it
sounds like it could work. Perhaps someone else can comment that has
an iPad and has charged their phone before with its charger.

UNU's Ultrapak is a battery pack for smartphones and tablets that can
deliver a full charge to devices after just 15 minutes of charging itself
up. This means that as long as users are carrying their Ultrapak, and can

UNU said the Ultrapak's super-fast charging is due to Ultra-X charging

proprietary additives, which increases the normal battery charging speed
 by
8 times. This makes the device the world's fastest self-charging battery

plug the battery into a wall outlet to charge it just like any other

According to what they say in this excerpt above it is the special battery

I can see how such super fast charging is useful on a small battery like

iPhone once or maybe a bit more than once and if you were out and about

this is a mute point if you have a larger battery like maybe a 12,000 or
15,000 MAH battery which can charge your iPhone 4 to 6 times. There is no
 way you would not

I think we are confusing a detail:-

The battery pack device is what charges or is charged super-fast, it charges
your devices normally.
The charging circuit in your device controls that.

Hi Arnold,

Perhaps I am being as paranoid as you are but I wouldn't do it. If the
charger was not designed for that battery, we know that fast charging causes
overheating and, I fear, would certainly damage the battery in the short or
medium term.

Hello,

The fitbit connects to your phone, iPad or computer via bluetooth. You can
set up to 5 different alarms.

I love my flex and hope to get the aria scale eventually. Right now I'm

Lay the device in the palm of your hand. You want the slanted side

well. This is the orientation we want the device in for everything else.

For charging, I use my small iPhone block or a low voltage bluetooth
charger. I plug in the fitbit charging cable into my iPhone block.

Lay the charging cradle in the palm of your hand. The USB end pointing
at your wrist, the cradle end toward your fingertips. There is pronounced
ridges on the base of the cradle, this is the correct side up.

The fitbit device slides right into the cradle. Again, slanted side up
as I described earlier.

Lol, hopefully I'm doing ok here.

Onto the flex band... No matter which wrist you choose, the plastic
viewing window is always on the outer side of your wrist. The slanted end
of the fitbit has the lights, so you want those to show upwards inside the
band. Putting the device in the band takes some practice a bit of
wiggling. I slip that slanted side upwards first, then with a little
pushing and riggling, it slips into place.

Good luck! If you need further assistance or a different perspective on
describing things, there are great podcasts by David Woodbridge over on

A Few Backup Questions

2014-08-23 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'll be taking advantage of the recently announced program to get a free
battery replacement for my iPhone5. There's no Apple Store nearby, though, so
I'll be sending my device to Apple and will therefore be without it for up to
ten days. My mother, who got her phone at the same time I did, will be doing
the same thing. I have an iPod Touch I can use; if we take turns, we can each
use the Touch while our phones are away, and activate an old flip phone for
actually making phone calls and texting non-iCloud people. All that said, here
are my questions regarding backing up our phones, and later, getting them back.

1. Can an iPhone5 iCloud backup be restored to the iPod Touch? That way whoever
is using the iPod can have their apps and data without having to manually
download everything.
2. Is there anything special about backing up with iTunes, or will an iCloud
backup be fine for restoring when the iPhones come back?
3. There's a chance I can use an iPhone4 instead of the iPod. Will backups work
on that (see question 1)?
4. Is there anything else I need to know about backups for this situation?

Thanks for any help/information anyone can offer. I'll send a separate email
soon with details on the battery replacement program for anyone interested.

Free New Batteries for Some iPhone5 Units

2014-08-23 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
As promised, here's the email on this program. Instead of typing everything,
I'll just paste the text from Apple's website below. The page link is after the
text.

iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program

Apple has determined that a very small percentage of iPhone 5 devices may
suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently.
The affected iPhone 5 devices were sold between September 2012 and January 2013
and fall within a limited serial number range.
If your iPhone 5 is experiencing these symptoms and meets the eligibility
requirements noted below, Apple will replace your iPhone 5 battery, free of
charge.

RE: A Few Backup Questions

2014-08-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alex,

I would do an encrypted backup via iTunes and restore from it when your
iPhones come back.

It is not recommended to restore an iPhone backup to an iPod Touch. Yes,
both devices run iOS, but the hardware is very different and according to
Apple Restoring an iPhone backup to an iPod touch may result in unexpected
behavior on the iPod touch (such as the device resetting repeatedly).

Here is a short article where this comes from and while the support article
is from 2009, I have seen newere references that this is still the same.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2624?viewlocale=en_US

As for restoring your iPhone 5 backup to an iPhone 4 this should not be a
problem.

Also, Mark recently replied to one of my posts where I mentioned the
encrypted backup and he pointed out that in his opinion a regular backup
also backed up passwords and all of the same information. This is, however,
not the case. The main difference between a regular and an encrypted backup
si that the encrypted backup also backs up your keychain and allows it to be
restored to a different device. If you don't encrypt the backup the keychain
will restore to the same device, but not to a new device. Mark, if you read
this I suggest you start using the encrypted backup option especially since
you said you are starting to like how keychain works. If you get a new
iPhone at some point and you don't encrypt your backup you'll not get that
data restored. Here is an Apple support article which explains in detail
what is backed up and what is not:

 Hello,

The fitbit connects to your phone, iPad or computer via bluetooth. You can
set up to 5 different alarms.

I love my flex and hope to get the aria scale eventually. Right now I'm
using a standard digital scale and reading the weight with my monocular.

Hi, I use the fitbit flex and love it! I'll try to explain charging and
 putting it in the band.

Lay the device in the palm of your hand. You want the slanted side
facing up toward your fingertips. If that part makes since, we are doing

Good luck! If you need further assistance or a different perspective on
describing things, there are great podcasts by David Woodbridge over on
 AppleVis.

Also, Mark recently replied to one of my posts where I mentioned the

backup also backed up passwords and all of the same information. This
is, however, not the case. The main difference between a regular and
an encrypted backup si that the encrypted backup also backs up your
keychain and allows it to be restored to a different device. If you
don't encrypt the backup the keychain will restore to the same device,
but not to a new device. Mark, if you read this I suggest you start
using the encrypted backup option especially since you said you are

Hi all,
I'll be taking advantage of the recently announced program to get a
free battery replacement for my iPhone5. There's no Apple Store
nearby, though, so I'll be sending my device to Apple and will
therefore be without it for up to ten days. My mother, who got her
phone at the same time I did, will be doing the same thing. I have an
iPod Touch I can use; if we take turns, we can each use the Touch
while our phones are away, and activate an old flip phone for actually
making phone calls and texting non-iCloud people. All that said, here
are my questions regarding backing up our phones, and later, getting
them back.
1. Can an iPhone5 iCloud backup be restored to the iPod Touch? That
way whoever is using the iPod can have their apps and data without
having to manually download everything.
2. Is there anything special about backing up with iTunes, or will an
iCloud backup be fine for restoring when the iPhones come back?
3. There's a chance I can use an iPhone4 instead of the iPod. Will
backups work on that (see question 1)?
4. Is there anything else I need to know about backups for this situation?
Thanks for any help/information anyone can offer. I'll send a separate
email soon with details on the battery replacement program for anyone
interested.

Hi,

79 cents for an iPhone 5c isn't bad. 5s's are $79.00.

Sending this on in case someone might be interested. Heard it on the

I understand contracts are available with a variety of carriers, so
there might be a low-cost option suitable for some.

A question regarding the volume of my ringer and VoiceOver

2014-08-23 Thread SoonerAnnie
Hi all,

For the past couple of days my iPhone 5S has been acting strangely when the
phone rings. The ringer volume is good but, for some reason, VO is barely
audible! Heretofore, when the volume of the ringer was pretty loud, so was VO,
but now, not so. As far as I know, I haven't done anything to cause this to
happen, so therefore don't know what to do to fix this most annoying problem!
If anyone has suggestions/ideas, I would very much appreciate hearing them! I
have checked in the menus but am unable to find anything that would help. I
tried turning up the volume as VoiceOver was speaking but that didn't work.

Thanks in advance,

Ann

RE: A question regarding the volume of my ringer and VoiceOver

2014-08-23 Thread Richard Turner
Try doing that with earphones plugged in.
Then, unplug the earphones and do a two finger flick up and start tapping
the up volume button.
There is something flakey that happens from time to time with the volume.

Richard

Subject: A question regarding the volume of my ringer and VoiceOver

Hi all,

For the past couple of days my iPhone 5S has been acting strangely when the
phone rings. The ringer volume is good but, for some reason, VO is barely
audible! Heretofore, when the volume of the ringer was pretty loud, so was
VO, but now, not so. As far as I know, I haven't done anything to cause this
to happen, so therefore don't know what to do to fix this most annoying
problem! If anyone has suggestions/ideas, I would very much appreciate
hearing them! I have checked in the menus but am unable to find anything
that would help. I tried turning up the volume as VoiceOver was speaking but
that didn't work.

Thanks in advance,

Hello Traci,

1Password and the keychain serve two different purposes, effectively.

As far as I know, one cannot easily retrieve stored info from the keychain,
I mean it can be done, but not on the fly. Also, the key chain's primary
purpose, as I understand it, is to facilitate security convenience between
one's various Apple products and the outside world, as it were.

1Password, however, in its accessible version as far as we're concerned,
allows one to quickly look up and/or generate various passwords and/or
credentials.

I use 1Password, primarily, as a secure way of storing my credit card
numbers, various ID info, and so forth on the phone so I can quickly
retrieve them on the fly.

In recent releases, I do believe 1Password is seeking to expand its
functionality in becoming a one-stop security solution. For me, though, I
only use it on my phone and only to store info, written on the various cards
that I carry on my person.

Finally, although the iCloud Keychain did facilitate a smooth transition
from one device to another, I have not nor do I plan to allow it to store
any of my passwords or credit card info; if, for no other reason, than that
I don't want to forget them just in case I am on a Windows computer as I am
most of the time.

The Voice Over Accessibility of 1 Password

2014-08-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Steve,

I changed the Subject line of this thread to more accurately reflect our
dialog.

To be honest, I am a big fan of 1 Password for iOS. However, I am a
long-time user and am familiar with all of the various nuances of the app.

The currently released version, while usable with VoiceOver is probably not
for anyone who does not consider themselves to be a intermediate to advanced
VoiceOver user.

Some problems with the currently released version, for example, is that
characters are not echoed as they are being entered into certain fields.

Having said this, I am a beta tester and the makers of the app are making it
more VoiceOver friendly, as it used to be in days gone by.

However, since the announcement of iOS ate, the developers have required
that all beta testers use the beta of iOS 8.

I decided not to install the beta of iOS 8 and, therefore, cannot comment on
how well the upcoming release of 1Password will work with VoiceOver.

I can tell you, however, that the last beta of 1 Password that I tested in
iOS 7 had resolved many of the issues I reported.

Re: A Few Backup Questions

2014-08-23 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Alex, I just wanted to add one thing since your backup questions have been
answered by now. I'm not sure whether this particular battery replacement
program would qualify, but sometimes you can call Apple and request an advanced
exchange. This is where they ship out a new device and then you ship yours back
to them upon receiving the new device. There is a fee for this; I believe it is
$35 but free under AppleCare Plus, and you receive everything you need to ship
the old phone back to Apple. Again, not sure if they would offer this to you,
but it's something you could call to ask about. Of course, you might prefer to
keep your original phone, but I don't think that's necessarily a guarantee even
if you ship your phone in first. I've read some material on Apple.com that
indicates there is no guarantee whether you would get your original device back
or a new one when you send it in for repairs. The advance exchange program may
well have changed or been discontinued, but I was offered this option once.

use the Touch while our phones are away, and activate an old flip phone for
actually making phone calls and texting non-iCloud people.

Re: A question regarding the volume of my ringer and VoiceOver

2014-08-23 Thread Alan Paganelli
I would try shutting down my iPhone, waiting a bit and then turning it back
on again. I had this strange problem last night. All of a sudden, my
iPhone 5s went silent. I knew there was around three quarters battery power
left in the can so that wasn't the issue. Then I turned on my Bluetooth ear
peace and it connected to my phone. I could hear voice over fine but not
through my 5s. So, I shut down my phone, waited a bit and fired it back up.
All returned to normal. That was the first time I have seen anything like
that sense I bought my 5s last October 20.

Find the text (not the thread, but the message inside the thread). Once VO is
reading it, turn the rotor to actions, flick up or down to more, and double
tap. Two buttons will appear at the bottom of the screen; the one on the right

Note that this method does not seem to work well if you have the on-screen

Re: Forwarding a text message from the i phone

2014-08-23 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi Terri, find the Messages app (normally at the top-left on the first page of
the home screen) and double-tap to open it. If you are in the list of
conversations, locate the one you want and double-tap to open it. If you are
already in the right conversation, you can skip this step. If you are in
another conversation (that you don't want to forward), you'll need to find the
back button near the top-left of the window and double-tap on it to return to
the list of conversations, then open the right one as I described above. Find a
message that you want to forward and double-tap and hold on it. A menu will
appear, slightly above the message. You might have to explore the screen to
locate it. Choose the more button and double-tap on it. You can now select more
messages if you want by double-tapping on them. Now near the bottom of the
screen you'll find a forward button. You will now be in a new conversation with
all the messages you selected all ready to forward. Enter a contact name or
phone number in the to field and send the message as you would normally.

Hope this helps,

Grant

The currently released version, while usable with VoiceOver is probably not

Hello,

Am I right that your mail accounts are on your computer and you want them on
your iPad? If so, are you using a Mac or a PC? If a Mac, sync the accounts with
iCloud, and then sync mail with iCloud on your iPad, and everything should be
copied across. If you're using a Windows machine, do you have Outlook? If so,
you can download the iCloud control panel (I think that's at www.icloud.com),

to your iPad if you also set it to sync with iCloud.

Lay the device in the palm of your hand. You want the slanted side
facing up toward your fingertips. If that part makes since, we are
doing

Hi Rob,

If you sync mail on the iPHones with iCloud and also sync Mail on your iPad
with iCloud, the info should copy automatically. Go to Settings/iCloud on all
the devices and turn on mail.

Best,
Anna

Re: importing mail account details to my iPad Mini

2014-08-23 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Anna,

I don't why but although I have checked the option in iCloud to have my mail
synced, when I got my iPhone I had to configure all my e-mail accounts manually
on the iPhone because apart from my iCloud account, the details had not synced.
I assumed they would, but they had not. I could never understand why.

Have I missed something?

Best wishes

Hi Alan,

Unfortunately, that didn't work for me. And also, unfortunately, I have had
the problem you mentioned on more than one occasion and, as you said, just
shutting it down for a bit and then rebooting did the trick.
Disappointingly, not so with this problem. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Alan

Ann

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the suggestion, but guess I must be not doing something
correctly. When you do anything with the volume it silences the ringer so
even when VO gets turned up, when I try it, the volume is still very low
when the ringer sounds. Grrr! So far I haven't thrown my phone or begun

Try doing that with earphones plugged in.
Then, unplug the earphones and do a two finger flick up and start tapping
the up volume button.
There is something flakey that happens from time to time with the volume.

Re: A question regarding the volume of my ringer and VoiceOver

2014-08-23 Thread Kelly Pierce
Try going into settings/sounds and turn off sound check. This helped
me with my ringer volume. My VO volume was fine. My ringer would
drop down to 10 percent volume or lower for no clear reason.
Normally, sound check normalizes the tracks and albums in the music

 Hi all,

For the past couple of days my iPhone 5S has been acting strangely when the
phone rings. The ringer volume is good but, for some reason, VO is barely
audible! Heretofore, when the volume of the ringer was pretty loud, so was
VO, but now, not so. As far as I know, I haven't done anything to cause
 this
to happen, so therefore don't know what to do to fix this most annoying
problem! If anyone has suggestions/ideas, I would very much appreciate
hearing them! I have checked in the menus but am unable to find anything
that would help. I tried turning up the volume as VoiceOver was speaking
 but
 that didn't work.

 Thanks in advance,

 Ann

Re: importing mail account details to my iPad Mini

2014-08-23 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi guys,

I apologize. I thought sure that what I said would work, but I hadn't tested
it. I just did some googling, and it doesn't look like you have any option but
to enter each account manually.

One thing that would work would be to restore the new iPad from a backup of
your iPhone. That would sync your accounts and app data across.

Again, I apologize for the bad info.

Best,
Anna

 Hello,

Am I right that your mail accounts are on your computer and you want them
 on
your iPad? If so, are you using a Mac or a PC? If a Mac, sync the accounts
with iCloud, and then sync mail with iCloud on your iPad, and everything
should be copied across. If you're using a Windows machine, do you have
Outlook? If so, you can download the iCloud control panel (I think that's
 at
www.icloud.com), and use it to sync Outlook with iCloud. Then the account
info should be copied to your iPad if you also set it to sync with iCloud.

 Best,

That way your ringer volume is only change there in settings.
Then, see if turning the volume up while voiceover is speaking makes a

charger. I plug in the fitbit charging cable into my iPhone block.

Lay the charging cradle in the palm of your hand. The USB end pointing at
your wrist, the cradle end toward your fingertips. There is pronounced
ridges on the base of the cradle, this is the correct side up.

The fitbit device slides right into the cradle. Again, slanted side up as I
 described earlier.

Lol, hopefully I'm doing ok here.

Onto the flex band... No matter which wrist you choose, the plastic viewing
window is always on the outer side of your wrist. The slanted end of the
fitbit has the lights, so you want those to show upwards inside the band.
Putting the device in the band takes some practice a bit of wiggling. I
slip that slanted side upwards first, then with a little pushing and
 riggling, it slips into place.

Good luck! If you need further assistance or a different perspective on
describing things, there are great podcasts by David Woodbridge over on
 AppleVis.

That way your ringer volume is only change there in settings.
Then, see if turning the volume up while voiceover is speaking makes a
difference.
My guess is your ringer volume is changing with the buttons.

Ann, this probably won't result in anything different from what you've
already tried, but have you tried correcting the VoiceOver volume using the
volume setting in the rotor? I would suggest you adjust your volume to the

start VO reading everything there with a 2-finger swipe up to test it and
see if it messes up again when you call the phone from your home phone.

Good luck.

Why are you guessing this will be the case Sieghard? Are you thinking
that when the iPhone 6 comes out, the 5s will become free with a
contract? If so, I don't think this was the case in the past. My memory

 Hi,

 79 cents for an iPhone 5c isn't bad. 5s's are $79.00.

Sending this on in case someone might be interested. Heard it on the
 news today

I understand contracts are available with a variety of carriers, so
there might be a low-cost option suitable for some.

Everywhere which syncs my passwords, SafeNotes and other information between
all my computers and my iPhone. For a little while Roboform lost a bit of
accessibility, but as far as I can tell it's all good again now and I really
like Roboform a lot.

Is keychains security much the same as onePassword and the like?

I've been interested in activating iCloud keychain on my phone. I greatly
enjoy it on my Mac.

I recently bought my wife a new laptop running Windows 8. We created a

Microsoft account information, a pass code was sent to her email and when
she entered that passcode into her new Windows machine, her account was
setup, her email was configured, her apps were downloaded and so on.

Hello All,

I am the proud new owner of a MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

One of my greatest concerns, being a Windows user, was the difficulty I
would encounter transferring the contents including passwords and system
preferences from my old MacBook to the new one.

Now I have used the Migration Assistant in the past, when assisting friends,
but not without some minor problems said problems including duplicated user
account errors, etc.

Before purchasing the new Mac, I decided to configure and enable the
keychain on both my iPhone and my old Mac.

I would be lying if I stated that I totally understand all of the nuances of
the keychain but, somewhere along the line I must have enabled security
authorization from my iPhone.

As a result, during the setup process on the new Mac, I was asked to enter
my iCloud keychain security code. Upon doing this, I was sent a
verification code via SMS to my iPhone. Upon entering this verification
code into the new Mac, everything, and I mean everything was configured as
it was on the old Mac.

The migration was flawless and, unlike on my beloved Microsoft Windows,
painless as well.
