Dvorak keyboard layout

2017-05-11 Thread Nimer Jaber
Hello,

I am writing to inquire if anyone has found any accessible DVORAK keyboard
layout solution. I have looked, however have not been successful. I found a few
keyboards on the appstore, however none of the ones I tried were accessible.
Unfortunately, iOS does not have a dvorak layout. I would appreciate any advice
with this.

Thanks.

Trouble with dictation, resolved for the moment

2017-05-11 Thread Kathy Brandt
Mentioning in case this has anything to do with the problems people are having
with Siri opening apps: over the past few days when I have tried to dictate, it
has been happening that I get two tones with a knocking type sound when I try
to start dictation in an iMessage or email on my iPod six GEN. I disabled Siri,
and reset network settings at first; that didn't help. When someone told me
that dictation could be disabled independently of Siri, since it says in
privacy from what I gather, that the two are related, I disabled both dictation
and Siri, turned off my device, then re-enabled dictation and Siri. I hope this
sticks.

I am loving this speaker. It works as advertised and I noticed that when I had
my iPod and my laptop connected via cable that I could set a separate volume
level for each device. It also did well with calls.

Re: Introducing Alexa calling and messaging

2017-05-11 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
So is it just me or are others having issues getting the call feature to work
properly? I have the updated Alexa app on my phone but when I go to the bottom
of the screen, I don't see any communication or conversation tab. I am in
Canada though so that could explain it. However I installed an app called Flyp
which lets me make a US phone number which I did but when I went on to the
Amazon website it didn't text me a code to change the number. Really wish I
knew what I could do as I know a person who lives in Australia, which they
claim is one of the other countries other than Canada the Echo doesn't support,
yet he's got his working with calls. It just makes me want to grab my hair and
tear it out. Lol. Very frustrated.

RE: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Les,

Try saying “Open Tune”, that did it for me.
Definitely odd, but typical SIRI nonsense.
I still can’t believe when I sometimes ask SIRI to call a certain business like
the Sears department store how it finds and lists all Sears stores in a 300
mile radius but not our local one which is half a mile away from my house. The
same goes for our British Columbia Liquor Store, it finds them in all the town
and cities some of which are hundreds of miles away since I live in northern BC
where towns are often far apart, but it won’t find my local BC Liquor Store
which is a 6 minute walk from my house.
I really hope in iOS 11 SIRI will get major smarts, but then again I did hope
that last year. Now, however, with the rumour that Apple will release an
Echo/Google Home type speaker possibly also with a camera maybe they finally
make SIRI a lot smarter.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: unable to use Siri to start KNFB reader

2017-05-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Richard, same here, you just have to say “Open KNFB” and not “Open KNFB
Reader”. I have it on my main home screen so I usually don’t use SIRI to open
these apps since I can find them easily and quickly, but “Open KNFB” is shorter
anyways.

On my iPhone 5s, if I say Open KNFB, it works, but if I say Open KNFB Reader,

What country are you in? The Amazon Echo devices are only officially supported

RE: sounds in the native twitter app

2017-05-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Bill,

I am very proud of you for creating your first Tweet.

Twitter can, indeed, be a bit overwhelming so please give yourself time to
acclimate to its environment.

I am going to paste in two posts that I sent to the list, a while ago, that I
hope will help get you started or, at least, clarify some aspects of Twitter.
However, just like learning to swim, the best way to get used to Twitter is to
just stick with it and explore.

One more thing, the posts were written over a year ago so some of the steps,
describing the app, will be outdated but the concepts are the same.

Okay, see the two posts, below my signature.

Good Luck and Welcome to Twitter,

Mark

Subject: RE: iOS Native Twitter App Now Supports Moments, Via VoiceOver

Hello Regina,

First, I completely understand how Twitter can overwhelm anyone, in the
beginning. It just takes time in order to learn what to filter out and, more
importantly, what the various symbols/tags mean.

Second, As a general rule, I suggest that those new to Twitter only follow news
sources such as CNN, The Associated Press, CBS, etc. I suggest this because we
all know what news is supposed to sound like and, as a result, we can quickly
learn what is data and what is Twitter meta-data, intuitively. Now that I
think about it, when I began using the Twitter app, I only chose to follow one
news source, CNN. Little-by-little, I began adding other news sources and then
finally commercial companies, private citizens, etc.

One of the biggest complaints about Twitter, Facebook, social media, etc, is
how much time it takes in order to stay up-to-date with the latest information.

Over the last couple of years, Twitter has taken the lead with regard to
providing quick up-to-the-minute news in virtually every area of the globe. I
suspect this began when people in third-world countries began posting to
Twitter when anything horrific happened such as a tsunami, earthquake, etc.
Regardless of how it started, mainstream media began using Twitter as a way to
cultivate more patrons. Also, during his first presidential run, Barack Obama
demonstrated how powerful Twitter can be in reaching young people in order to
galvanize a movement.

Okay, enough of the history lesson. My point is that the more people used
Twitter, the more information there was to sift through. As Kerri stated
yesterday, in order to keep up, one had to either employ a third-party app to
conduct complex searches or one had to follow an enormous number of
people/sources. At to that the fact that one had to constantly check Twitter
so as not to miss anything.

Enter Twitter Moments. Affectively, this turns Twitter into a kind of breaking
news aggregate.

As to how to use it more effectively?

Near the top of the screen, you see some major categories. Select the one in
which you're interested. Then, you will see a list of top-stories. Find one
that peaks your interest and select it.

This will bring up a full-screen display containing either a photo or a video.
Near the bottom of the screen, there will be some text describing the event.
Now keep in mind that the text will only be a few sentences. Moments is not
intended to be a news article but only a blurb to keep you up-to-date.

After you read the blurb and/or view the photo/play the video, you can then use
a three-finger swipe from right-to-left in order to see another blurb on that
same topic either by the same source or by another poster.

When you're done, either activate the Close button or perform a single-finger,
hold, and swipe up gesture to be taken back to the main Moments area.

Okay, I think that about covers the basics.

Good Luck and enjoy,

Mark

The Beginner's Guide to the Hashtag

By Rebecca Hiscott
Oct 08, 2013

If you’re a social media novice, hashtags — those short links preceded by the
pound sign (#) — may seem confusing and unnecessary. But they are integral to
the way we communicate online, and it’s important to know how to use them (even
though some people, like Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake, are not the
biggest fans). Plus, they can be a lot of fun.

On Twitter, the pound sign (or hash) turns any word or group of words that
directly follow it into a searchable link. This allows you to organize content
and track discussion topics based on those keywords. So, if you wanted to post
about the Breaking Bad finale, you would include #BreakingBad in your tweet to
join the conversation. Click on a hashtag to see all the posts that mention the
subject in real time.

The hashtag’s widespread use began with Twitter but has extended to other
social media platforms. In 2007, developer Chris Messina proposed, in a tweet,
that Twitter begin grouping topics using the hash symbol.

RE: Viewing Apps from within iTunes

2017-05-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Terri,

Congratulations on your purchase of an Android device. As I always say, one
can never have too many tools in her / his proverbial toolkit.

Now, as to your questions:

Please keep in mind that I only speak from my own personal experience and
nothing more. You may wish to contact Apple Accessibility as they, doubtless,
have access to more resources than I.

Question:
However, is there a way for me to go in to iTunes, and view the Apps
that were installed on my phone?

Answer:
No. The only thing you can do is to view your iTunes account from within
iTunes. This will give you a list of every app you have ever downloaded, at
one time or another.

Question:
So within iTunes, is there a way to view my contacts, as well.

Answer:
No. generally speaking, you cannot view Contacts from within the iTunes
application. However, (1) assuming that you created an iCloud account and (2)
chose to synchronize your iOS device's contact with said iCloud account, you
can, from any web browser, login to your iCloud account and export your list of
contacts that can then be imported to your Android device or its companion
cloud equivalent such as Google.

Finally, if you have not yet done so, I suggest that you join the Android
accessibility support group. Like this one, it is a Google Group. The name is
Eyes Free and it's email address is:
eyes-f...@googlegroups.com

Good Luck and I'll see you on the Android side of town (smile).

Subject: Viewing Apps from within iTunes

Hello everyone,

I have recently decided to try out an Android phone. Nothing against the
iPhone. Just a personal choice.

Anyway, I of course can't remember every App that I had on my iPhone, or
iPad. And I do know that some Apps I won't have access to, when it comes
to Android.

However, is there a way for me to go in to iTunes, and view the Apps
that were installed on my phone?

I no longer have the phone. So this is why I am wondering if I can do this.

Also, while most of my contacts moved over successfully, a few didn't
for some reason.

So within iTunes, is there a way to view my contacts, as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Subject: Getting feedback through the App Store for accessibility issues

Greetings. I had an issue with the Walgreens app a few days ago.
Walgreens sent out an update which enables 2 factor authentication in
the app for added security. I was curious how well this worked with
VoiceOver, so when the app came up I went straight into the Account
Settings screen. After I provided my Touch ID verification, the
security screen came up. This screen asked me to get a code that would
be emailed, texted, or called to me. When I double tapped the text
code link, the group expanded, and then immediately collapsed. No edit
field appeared and no message was sent. After several attempts I
turned VoiceOver off and handed my phone to my sighted wife. She was
able to request the code and enter it with no difficulty.

I then went into the App Store and submitted a 1 star review
describing the issue. Last night I got a reply from a Walgreens app
developer which thanked me for the feedback. The developer said that
since I had authenticated the one time, I would not be asked to do it
again. They went onto say that they would give the issue to their
engineers and work on a fix for everyone soon.

If anyone on list has not updated to iOS 10 yet, then this is a very
good reason to do so. The developer was able to respond to my review
directly and give the appropriate feedback. This feature was added
when iOS 10 came out last fall. Interestingly, the response was not
accessible to me on the App Store reviews screen for the app, even
though it appeared on screen. I did get an email with the feedback of
their comments in full. If anyone comes across any accessibility
issues with apps, do what I did and submit a low review in the App
Store. The developers and companies do pay attention to those reviews,
since they want their over all ratings to be as high as possible.

Best,
Wayne Merritt

Hello Lea,

My favorite journaling app for iOS is called MacJournal. This app consistently
remains 100% VoiceOver accessible and is extremely flexible and intuitive.

As the name suggest, it does have a companion Mac OS X app but either can be
used without the other. I've been using the iOS app for more than two years

Give it a try and good luck on your endeavor.

RE: Measuring Blood Pressure

2017-05-11 Thread Mike Ulrich
Rob, here’s a pertinent update:

I too was told by the Qardio Support person, both through email and a phone
call; the reset hole was around that indented area on the side of the battery
cap, wedged behind the cuff itself.

I must of tried to find this little hole for a paper clip to be inserted into,
for the past 2 days! It was like a blind Chinese Water Torture Test! Aaargh,
and som inna batch indeed!

So today I went up to my local Walgreens and ask for the Pharmacist to help me
in locating this stupid little reset hole. I repeated the exact verbiage from
the Qardio Support Person, and the same words from all of the YouTube videos I
listened to; on where this hole is.

He followed my exact instructions word for word, and nothing, and no hole! Then
he just so happened to ask me: “Hey Mike, what about this little hole on the
top of the battery cap?”. I was like “Well Som ina batch and, and screw me too,
and (Well you can fill in the blanks).

So here’s the real dealio:

1. With the unit completely rolled up and the flap magnetically secured
with the battery cap facing upward; That little indentation to open the battery
cap should be up and facing away from you.

2. The reset hole will be in the left corner closest to you.

Anyway, I know this stuff ain’t too easy to put into typed words. So I’ve got
my cell number posted at the bottom of this email, just give me a call and I’ll
give you the verbal scoop.

BTW: I did let Qardio Support know of their error, and suggested they have one
of their support people put on a blindfold and grab and IPhone in Voice Over
and the Qardio app installed, and try to set the unit up properly and perform a
BP test. I’ll let you know what they say.

Bear with me. This may be a little complicated to describe.

First, here is the statement from the manual.

RESETTING THE PAIRING ON iOS

In order to reset the pairing, unwrap the cuff from around the QardioArm to
switch on the device and use a paper clip to press the button on the pinhole

on the battery compartment hatch.

If necessary, go into the Settings of your phone or tablet, select the
QardioArm and select “Forget this device”.

You should see a green light shining through.

First, I will describe how to find the battery compartment hatch.

Slightly lift the cuff from the QardioArm device on the end that does not have
the engraved QardioArm logo.

Insert and move your finger around between the cuff and the device.

The indented rectangle is the battery compartment hatch. Press it with your
fingernail if you want to open the compartment to replace the batteries. But
you do not need to open the compartment to reset the device.

There is a small round hole on each side of the battery compartment hatch.

One of these 2 holes should be the hole you insert a paper clip to reset the
device. Since I don't want to reset my device, I did not actually insert a
paper clip into either hole.

Hope this works for you.

Rob

Hi Robin all. I did purchase my cardio arm from Amazon and I now have it. I've
got everything screwed up, and I need to find the reset hole. I guess it is
somewhere within the battery, according to their support team. Does anybody
know how I can locate those tiny hole in which you shove a paperclip into? Any
help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Here are just a few bullet points from the www.getqardio.com web site:

QardioArm integrates with Apple Health and supports Apple Watch.

You can connect it to 8 smart phones and tablets including both iOS and Android
devices.

I did a podcast on www.applevis.com a couple of years ago. There you can find
the app description and podcast.

Texting and Drop Box

2017-05-11 Thread Kimberly Samco
Hello,

Is it possible to send someone a file from my Drop Box via text message? I
found a button at the bottom of the file I want to send which takes me to
various choices including "message". However, when I place the contact info in
the "To" field I cannot find a button to send it...only a cancel button which
makes me wonder if it's possible even though there is a "message" choice.

Thank you,

Kim

iTunes not Connecting to iTunes Store - Issue Resolved

2017-05-11 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi list,

I reported an issue about a month ago of being unable to connect to the
iTunes Store on my Windows 7 computer after upgrading iTunes to version 12.6
for use with iOS 10.3. Someone on the list suggested that I contact
AppleCare which I did and have been working with them all of this time. I
just got off the phone with the AppleCare support rep who had me delete a
registry key and it immediately resolved my issue. I love this sort of
instant gratification although I guess it's not really instant since we've
been working on it for about a month.

Thanks to the person on the list who suggested I contact AppleCare. I never
would have been able to resolve this without their help.

I'm thinking about buying two of these because I want stereo

some of the other Bose apps are problematic, but this one could be
better because it's not connected to music services etc. as I

Re: Introducing Alexa calling and messaging

2017-05-11 Thread Richard Turner
james,
You search for an app, by entering the app name in the search field in the app
store.
The app name is Alexa.
You set it up by filling out the information it asks for.
If that isn't enough to get you going, perhaps you need to find someone who can
walk you through it in person.
Good luck,

Richard

I set this feature up when my Alexa App was updated the other day. I have
tried out the messaging feature, and it is pretty cool. I did a test
 call, and that works well.

Re: Introducing Alexa calling and messaging

2017-05-11 Thread Deb Lewis
The app is required but the hardware is not required. The Show is not
available until June so we won't know how accessible that will be. It
has better speakers, and htat's about all I think it's good for unless
you can look at a 7" screen. Some have commented about difficulty with
setting up the app. It's hard even with Voiceover off, very sluggish.
But I found that if you totally restart the phone you'll be able to
click on the links with VO. Just interact slowly with it because it's
extremely sluggish at best. Otherwise, what a fun feature this is.

RE: Measuring Blood Pressure

2017-05-11 Thread Rob

Rob

Here are just a few bullet points from the www.getqardio.com web site:

QardioArm integrates with Apple Health and supports Apple Watch.

You can connect it to 8 smart phones and tablets including both iOS and Android
devices.

I did a podcast on www.applevis.com a couple of years ago. There you can find
the app description and podcast.

Hi Caitlyn,

This thread is perfect timing. Is set up accessible? This being an arm cuff,
is it possible to take your own blood pressure? Currently, we have the wrist
model. Can multiple people use the device, and does it connect up to health
kit on the iPhones?

Thank you, I am looking to update our blood pressure monitor.

It’s called the qardio blood pressure moniter. Note the spelling of “qardio”,

Anyway, this is a cuff that you put on your arm, and it connects via bluetooth
to your i phone. There is an app for it, and this is where you control the
cuff and get the results from each measurement.

FyI, they also have a body weight scale, and it also measures body fat
percentage. This also connects to the phone via bluetooth. The app makes
these devices fully accessible. We own both of them here, and love both!

You can find them on amazon.

RE: Introducing Alexa calling and messaging

2017-05-11 Thread Bill Outman
Hello, folks.

As for your particular question, you would search in the app store for the app,
which is free.

Here are some other thoughts I have about all this, though.

I haven’t gotten any of the Amazon Echo products featureing Alexa as I have
thought it was mostly a toyand that I’m able to to get the things it would
offer in other ways.

I am further disappointed with my mother’s experience with it as a sighted
person. She is not particularly a tech whiz but does pretty well considering.
Mom went to Best Buy and bought the Echo Dot and tried to get help setting it
up. The first person whe was directed to in the store couldn’t help. I tried
to cue her in on the fact she would need the app for best results in set up and
doing things like adding skills. The whole business with the iCloud on her
phone became confusing for her. I went back to the store with her after we
went out to lunch together, but she couldn’t get help from the Geek Squad folks
and was told she would have to call later since the set up would have to be
done within range of the unit at home where it would reside.

She made that call and could hardly understand the person speaking with her,
then found out they really didn’t know how to handle the set-up even though
Best Buy had sold it to her.

We then tried a computer store we’ve done business with before but that would
have required a housecall with a charge. So she returned the unit, wondering
why people sell stuff like this that seems to be just a toy, really.

What really bothers me is the lack of service and being shuffled from person to
person like that. Something has happened to customer service generally to
where it has eroded badly. I can only imagine how it would be getting help as
a blind person, and if I had this device I probably could get considerable help
her.

Some of you may enjoy the Alexa devices, and I’m glad if you do, but it’s not
my cup of tea right now.

Sorry if this is a bit off track and too long winded. Don’t want to get in
trouble with the moderators.

Viewing Apps from within iTunes

2017-05-11 Thread Terri Stimmel

Thank you,

Terri

RE: Keeping in on the go journal

2017-05-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Lea,

My favorite journaling app for iOS is called MacJournal. This app consistently
remains 100% VoiceOver accessible and is extremely flexible and intuitive.

As the name suggest, it does have a companion Mac OS X app but either can be
used without the other. I've been using the iOS app for more than two years
and have still not yet purchased the Mac OS X version.

Give it a try and good luck on your endeavor.

Hi all,
Thank you so much for any help and or suggestions. Does anyone know of a good
way to keep a journal and record things as they happen while you are out.
Somethings might be private and personal, so does anyone have any suggestions?
I have some thoughts, but I thought I would consult the list and see if someone
could come up with something better than I can.
Thank you,
God bless,

RE: A Quick Question About the Native iOS Calculator App

2017-05-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
No offense, Christopher, but before "guessing" next time just open the app and
try it and then you would have noticed it has no effect.
When I played around with it I had at one point typed in about 4 or 5 digits
and then turned Voiceover off and did a swipe right to left to see if that
works and when I restarted Voiceover the last digit was indeed gone. I then
tried a double tap and hold followed by a swipe without lifting and that
worked, but then later after I cleared the field and started over it again
didn't work. It was almost as if it worked after you did a swipe once without
Voiceover, but if you cleared the field and started over it would not work
again. I did not turn Voiceover off a second time to see if this was consistent.
I do agree, however, that we should all write to Apple Accessibility and ask
that they get this to work, as far as I am concerned either a 3-finger swipe
would be OK or a double tap and hold followed by a swipe would also be OK just
along as there is a gesture that can be used with Voiceover as it is handy if
one correct a mistake without having to clear everything and start over.

Regards,
Sieghard

nope. That does nothing.
I think writing Apple Accessibility and asking that this be fixed is the only
thing left, other than switching to the free calculator app I sent a link to in
