RE: Battery status of Apple Bluetooth keyboard

2017-08-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If it isn’t displayed as Michael described just use it until it dies and get a
sense of how long it lasts, then if with normal use you get let’s say 2 weeks
out of it (just a random time period) simply plug it in once a week. As it will
have a new battery charging it more frequently and when it is not completely
empty won’t harm it.

Subject: Re: Battery status of Apple Bluetooth keyboard

There are some products which communicate their charge level to your iOS
device. You can either find out on the status line at the top of the screen or
in the Battery section of the today view which VoiceOver called page 1 of your
home screen. Sadly, many external batteries and other peripheral devices like
Bluetooth keyboards simply don't do this. There is often absolutely no
accessible way to determine batterly level short of using an app like Identifi
or Seeing AI to try and take a picture and get a description of how many small
lights are indicating battery charge. That's not an easy approach but it's the
only wild idea I have which has occasionally worked for me. The Harbolt company
sells a 15000 MA external battery which gives vibration and audio indicators of
charge level. It's the only such device I've ever come across.

Short of acquiring something like that, the only approach is to maintain good
charging habbits and plug things in to charge regularly so they're not out of
power while you need them.

RE: an issue with the facebook apps and viewing groups

2017-08-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Shermeen,

I can confirm your findings; however, the issue is somewhat more complex than
what you are aware.

When in a group, one can see all of the posts but for the fact that swiping up
and down is only moving the video display one line at a time without updating
VoiceOver.

I can understand how a totally blind person would not be able to detect this as
VoiceOver is completely out-of-sync with the video display, in this current
release.

For all intent and purposes, however, your description of the problem is
accurate. Clearly this is a programming oversight as the developer forgot to
include groups display in the VoiceOver video call.

Please report this to Facebook and you may use my bug description in your
comments.

Hi everyone,

I made the mistake of installing the most recent version of the facebook app,
and since then, I can only see two posts from any given group I'm in. I'll go
into the group's page, and no matter what I do, I can only see two posts before
I'm at the tabs along the bottom of the screen. This appears to be the case
with all facebook groups I'm in, so I doubt it's specific to any one group. Is
there a setting I need to tweak? are other people having this problem as
well?is there another app that people are using to access facebook?

Thanks in advance,

Shermeen

How iPhone 8 could change the wireless charging landscape - CNET

2017-08-09 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 4:00 AM
How iPhone 8 could change the wireless charging landscape - CNET
As we approach the expected September iPhone event, the gadget world is
abuzz with questions: Will there be two new iPhones or three? How much will
the presumed high-end OLED model cost? Will facial recognition fully replace
Touch ID, or merely be an alternative? And: will the iPhone finally get
wireless charging?
But that last one is a loaded question because "wireless" charging is in the
eye of the beholder.
Sure, you can place a Samsung Galaxy and many other Android phones onto a
charging pad without having to plug the phone into any charging cable. And
those same pads are increasingly built into countertops at coffee shops,
burger joints and even furniture you can buy at Ikea. But those pads still
need to be plugged into a wall outlet. The wire is still there, it's just
not attached directly to the phone.

Some current iPhone battery cases, like Mophie's Juice Pack, include
wireless charging compatibility.
Sarah Tew/CNET
That's a roundabout way of saying "wireless charging" is basically a
misnomer. Except when it isn't: "True" wireless charging -- in which
batteries get juiced up at distances measured in meters, not centimeters --
is a real-world technology, too.
Wireless charging over a distance could be the real tech game changer,
allowing us to juice up our phones as soon as we walk into a room. The
technology is also a boon to the ever-increasing number of smart devices in
our lives, from portable speakers to hearing aids. It just needs to get over
the pesky questions over whether it's safe -- and actually show up in a
mass-market consumer device.
So, before we posit the question as to whether the next iPhones will include
wireless charging, let's start by untangling the different technologies that
Apple might incorporate.
Inductive charging: Qi vs. Powermat
Widely used for years in cordless electric toothbrushes, inductive charging
is the most common technology employed in most of today's "wireless"
charging devices and accessories. There are two major standards in the
space: Qi -- named for a Chinese word that means energy and is pronounced
"chee" -- and Powermat.
Both standards are also working to incorporate magnetic resonance
technology, which could charge over distances of up to 4 centimeters. That
would, for instance, mean that aligning your phone to the charging pad
"sweet spot" would be less of a hit-and-miss affair, or that the charging
pads could be hidden behind thin layers of wood or plastic.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 recharging on a Powermat inductive charger at a
Manhattan Starbucks.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Qi has been incorporated into phones from a variety of manufacturers, and
McDonald's has built Qi-compatible chargers into the furniture at its
restaurants. Powermat-infused tables, meanwhile, can be found in some
Starbucks and airport lounges.
The rivals are backed by two opposing standards organizations, too: The
Wireless Power Consortium for Qi, and the AirFuel Alliance for Powermat. The
latter was formed when Powermat and its Power Matters Alliance merged with a
third, rival wireless standard (confusingly called the Alliance for Wireless
Power, or A4WP) in 2014.
The good news is that the rivalry has been less of a zero-sum game in recent
years. Samsung, for one, has made its recent high-end Galaxy phones
(including the S7 and S8) compatible with both inductive charging standards,
so you can juice it up on a Qi-powered counter at McDonald's and a
Powermat-powered one at Starbucks.
'True' wireless charging: Energous and Powercast
Forget about 4 centimeters. How about charging from a distance of 4 meters?
Or anywhere in an average-size room?
It's a pretty recent concept, but companies like Energous and Powercast are
producing technology that can more accurately be called wire-free. Both use
radio frequency (RF) energy, a charging method that works similarly to
Wi-Fi, that enables devices to charge when within the range of a power
transmitter.
Energous is the developer of WattUp, the wire-free technology that the
company claims is capable of charging anything from a mobile device to
various wearables like a hearing aid when located up to 15 feet (about 4.5
meters) from the transmitter. The first wire-free transmitter is expected to
hit the market before the end of the year, according to CEO Stephen R.
Rizzone.
"Besides mobility, the idea of charging at a distance is very, very
important to IoT devices," said Rizzone. "Now what's happened, is that you
no longer have to run a cable to them, nor do you have to have a large
battery, that either has to be replaced or somehow recharged. You can have a
much smaller battery because you're continually getting power from these
transmitters."

Powercast demonstrated its distance-charging tech in New York City earlier
this summer.

Sarahah: Four things you should know about popular app , USA TODAY

Sarahah: Four things you should know about popular app
By Brett Molina, USA Today

With 4 million downloads and 15 million users, the app has a strong user
base. Time The current top app on Apple's mobile marketplace isn't Facebook
or Snapchat, but a new social media app called Sarahah . The app created by
Saudi developer ZainAlabdin Tawfiq allows users to receive anonymous
comments. According to a description of Sarahah , the app "helps you in
discovering your strengths and areas for improvement by receiving honest
feedback from your employees and your friends in a private manner. A
screenshot of the social networking app Sarahah. (Photo: Sarahah) Sarahah
has been the top app on Apple's App Store since July 17, says app research
firm App Annie, and has been the iPhone's top app by downloads in 25
countries. So, why is Sarahah so popular? Here are four'things you should
know about it: The core of Sarahah is the ability to leave "constructive
feedback" to users. You can find people by using the app's search feature.
If you prefer reading comments from anyone, it's set by default in the app.
But you can limit this to only people who have a Sarahah account. Users can
also remove themselves from search and choose to to share a web link
(example: username.sarahah.com) with the people they want to receive
anonymous messages. The app logs comments you have received, sent and
favorited. That's the closest you get to a "follow" option if you want to
continue sending feedback to a user. Currently, there's no way to respond to
a message, but according to Sarahah's website, they are "studying this
option. Sarahah follows a long line of social networking apps allowing its
users to leave anonymous comments or ask anonymous questions. In some cases,
users might share a screenshot of the message or question on another
service'like Twitter and Snapchat, then leave an answer. Here's where the
anonymity of Sarahah becomes not so fun: people can sometimes be mean.
Several reviews on Apple's App Store cite a lot of the bad comments as
reason for giving Sarahah a weak rating. As one reviewer on the App Store
puts it, with a review titled Accessory to Cyber Bullying: "What did you
think was gonna happen if you let people text other people anonymously?

Password expert says he was wrong: Numbers, capital letters and symbols are useless: USA Today

Password expert says he was wrong: Numbers, capital letters and symbols are
useless
By Ashley May

USA TODAY Cybersecurity experts say certain password rules are ineffective.
Here is some of the latest advice on setting and resetting them. Time The
man who said use capital letters, special characters and numbers in your
password is now taking back that advice. (Photo: hanieriani, Getty
Images/iStockphoto) The man behind the 2003 report responsible for many
current password guidelines says the advice is wrong. Bill Burr, the author
of an 8-page publication released by the National Institute of Standards and
Technology, told The Wall Street Journal his previous advice of creating
passwords with special characters, mixed-case letters and numbers won't
deter hackers. In fact, he told the journal,'the paper wasn't based on any
real-world password data, but rather a paper written in the 1980s. 'Much of
what I did I now regret,' Burr told The Wall Street Journal . The problem is
that federal agencies, businesses and institutions took the paper
seriously'very seriously. The report turned into password protocol. Today,
even though Burr's report was updated in June, we are still prompted to
change our password every 90 days using at least one capital letter, symbol
and number. These combinations aren't secure,'mainly because people choose
predictable combinations. The advice about frequently changing a password
has been criticized since the report. A 2010 study by the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill showed that updating passwords often can
actually help hackers identify a pattern. Another study from Carleton
University said frequent changes are more inconvenient than helpful. The
better solution could be to simply use a password with four random words,
because the number of letters can be more difficult to hack than a small
combination of letters and special characters, the Journal reports. Finally,
a good reason to ignore those password prompts and come up with one we can
actually remember. Follow Ashley May on Twitter: @AshleyMayTweets

A baffling problem with my iPhone 7

2017-08-09 Thread SoonerAnnie
Hi all,

The problem I am having with my iPhone 7 is that all of a sudden...when I was
Facetime Audio chatting with my sister...It began having great interference. At
first we thought it was her iPhone 7 as it was making a crackling sound, but
then another friend Facetime audio called me and asked me if I was out in the
wind. She couldn't hear me, although I could hear her clearly. I made a regular
phone call from my home phone to my iPhone and the noise on the receiving end
was really bad! I first rebooted the phone. When there was no change, I tried a
hard reset. Then I reset network settings, then erased the phone and restored
it. Still static and crackling. Everything else is clear, including VoiceOver
and other apps that make noise. I am currently stumped and out of ideas, and
would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on what the problem might
be and what I might do about it. Thanks for reading all this - just wanted to
let you know what had already been tried. Thanks in advance for any help you
may give me!

Best,

Ann

Re: Air Pods Battery

2017-08-09 Thread Michael Feir
Hi Steve. You won't find that right on the status bar. Instead, you go to
your Today view. From page 2 of your home screen, flick right with three
fingers and you'll get to the Today view. From there, find the battery
heading and you'll find details on your iOS device's battery level as well
as your airpods. If you put one airpod in the case, you can seee how much
charge the case has remaining. The other option is to ask Siri about your
Airpods battery level. Hope that helps.

 Hello Harry,

That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. It may be that if you
turn on Keychain, the same passwords are saved as in an iTunes backup My
understanding is that health data is not part of iCloud backups in iOS 10,
so that would still be an advantage of an encrypted iTunes backup.

 Hi Vicki,

To restore to an iCloud backup, go to Settings, choose General, then
Reset, then Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the prompts. This
will completely wipe all the info on your device. You then start the
set-up process, and when you are asked, choose to
restore from iCloud. The device will restore from the latest backup.

As for why the backup file is small, it doesn't include the OS or your
apps. It also doesn't include large files like podcasts and music.
Instead, it contains a list of all your apps and how you had them
arranged, along with app data such as preferred settings and game
scores. some apps include other data, like documents, but many do not.
You have to download the data again. In short, restoring from a backup
takes some work and I wouldn't recommend it unless there's a
 compelling reason to do it.

 I hope that helps.

 Anna

Does touch ID have to do more with the phone or the IOS. My phone is pretty
old, a 5C, but I am hoping to get a new one pretty soon.

I'm just not sure which one yet.

If ICloud is backing up everything I have selected, shouldn't

  Hi Vicki,

To restore to an iCloud backup, go to Settings, choose General, then
Reset, then Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the prompts. This will
completely wipe all the info on your device. You then start the set-up process,
and when you are asked, choose to restore from iCloud. The device will restore
from the latest backup.

As for why the backup file is small, it doesn't include the OS or
your apps. It also doesn't include large files like podcasts and music.
Instead, it contains a list of all your apps and how you had them arranged,
along with app data such as preferred settings and game scores. some apps
include other data, like documents, but many do not. You have to download the
data again. In short, restoring from a backup takes some work and I wouldn't
recommend it unless there's a compelling reason to do it.

  I hope that helps.

  best,
  Anna

If ICloud is backing up everything I have selected, shouldn't it be

Thanks.

Re: restoring an ICloud backup

2017-08-09 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hello Harry,

That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. It may be that if you turn
on Keychain, the same passwords are saved as in an iTunes backup. My
understanding is that health data is not part of iCloud backups in iOS 10, so
that would still be an advantage of an encrypted iTunes backup.

Best,
Anna

RE: Question About Seeing AI and Brightness

2017-08-09 Thread Richard Turner
I'd suggest you download the free app called Boop Light Detector.
Run that first and see what it indicates for light over the items you want to
use Seeing AI on.
It gives off beeps and the faster and higher pitched, the brighter the light.

Then, as Donna suggested, make sure in the menu, settings, manage light is on
which will then use the flash, but it also uses a lot of battery when the flash
is on.

Hi, Everyone.
I'm running IOS10.3.3 and for the past few days, Seeing AI hasn't

a light, or anything? I have no usable vision, so am not sure how the
presence of, or lack of, a light source affects things.

Thanks,

When you downloaded the appdid you allow the app to have access to the camera?
Have you gone into settings & turned off the light? When installed the light on
the camera is automatically set to on. If you have turned off the light you
will have to make sure the room you are in is brightly lit.
