Hi Dennis, I don’t know if our phones I mean the phones in our family an iPhone
8 plus, and iPhone X and my wife’s 1+6t can use the Verizon towers. I would
have to call and ask them. Plus, they are a little bit more expensive the
consumer cellular and my wife needs to be able to call A local number to use a
calling card to call Colombia. Sometimes phone companies don’t allow you to use

I have not used Consumer Cellular. But I have been very pleased with service
through Visible.com. I believe they are a wholly-owned company by Verizon and
use the Verizon cell network and sell under-used band width. There are two cons
to consider and many pros.

The cons:
First, support is only available through 24 hour chat on their website or
through a smart phone app. No email, no phone number.
Second, if service gets congested in your area then your data will be slowed in
preference to direct Verizon customers. I have noticed this, especially during
these stay at home months, when in a rural area I frequent. But, service in
town is very good.

The pros:
* Their plan provides unlimited calls, unlimited texts and unlimited data,
along with hot spot service with no caps, all for one monthly price of $40 or
as low as $25. I particularly needed hot spot capability so this feature was a
big draw; I have not been disappointed.
* That $40 monthly cost will be less if you join a Party Pay group. A Party Pay
group can have 2 members for a $5 discount per person each month; 3 members for
$10 discount monthly and 4 members for $15 discount monthly, or only $25. No
additional fees. There is no catch to joining a Party Pay group. No one shares
a bill or any other connection except for getting the group discount. I easily
found an open Party Pay group on Reddit and joined within a few minutes.
* After two months of paying for service they send a virtual MasterCard worth
$100.

If you can handle the two minor drawbacks then I think It is a good service
option.
HTH,
Jeff

Re: Ergonomic Bluetooth keyboards

2020-06-17 Thread Gadget Girl
Hi there!

I have an 'old school', Brand New, still in the manufacturer's box, full-size
ergonomic keyboard by Microsoft. I purchased it in the Win 32 USB, Windows
XP/Mac era. Keyboard has never been used. Only recently opened to examine
contents inside the box since never opened after purchase. Just never got to
it. Box in excellent, Like-New condition. Still wrapped in box as Microsoft
left it. Getting Started booklet and software included. No missing parts.
From clean, dry climate-controlled storage. Non-Smoking/Pet-Free environment.

Unsure if Keyboard speaks or can work with VoiceOver since a Copyright on the
box reads, 2005 Microsoft Corp. Also unsure if Keyboard offers Bluetooth, as
Keyboard uses a wire to plug in, but at least, that could be another option for
your Client.

Now cleaning out Office closet which has Brand New & Lightly Enjoyed 'Blasts
from the Past'! This is the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 with
Advanced Ergonomic Desighn. I will be posting this item on the BlindAds list.
Thanks.

Best regards,
Anita K.

If they are not DRM protected eBooks, then Voice Dream Reader hands-down.
If you buy a Kindle book, you would have to read it in the Kindle app, unless
you have Windows then there is a utility that can convert them to a generic
ePub book that can be read in Voice Dream Reader.
If you buy an eBook from iTunes, you have to read it in the Apple Books app.

Re: battery drain while listening to nls books

2020-06-17 Thread Barbara Stahl
If you notice significant battery drain, you can try putting the phone in low
power mode while listening. You can do this through settings or with seri by
asking seri to turn on low power mode. You can turn it off again by telling
seri to turn off low power mode.
I have done this with apps like I heart radio which is a major battery drainer.
the difference in battery drainage was immediately noticeable. So you could
try this method.

Re: Choosing a phone company

2020-06-17 Thread juan mojena
Hi Dennis, I don’t know if our phones I mean the phones in our family an iPhone
8 plus, and iPhone X and my wife’s 1+6t can use the Verizon towers. I would
have to call and ask them. Plus, they are a little bit more expensive the
consumer cellular and my wife needs to be able to call A local number to use a
calling card to call Colombia. Sometimes phone companies don’t allow you to use
such numbers.

to consider and many pros.

The cons:
First, support is only available through 24 hour chat on their website or

Second, if service gets congested in your area then your data will be slowed in

The pros:
* Their plan provides unlimited calls, unlimited texts and unlimited data,
along with hot spot service with no caps, all for one monthly price of $40 or
as low as $25. I particularly needed hot spot capability so this feature was a
big draw; I have not been disappointed.

Getting back to ear piece receiver with Google Voice app iPhone8+

2020-06-17 Thread Shai
Hello,
Is there a means to efficiently move back to the ear piece using
VoiceOver when one is using the Google voice app for calls? Right now,
the app engages the speaker phone when one draws the phone away from
the ear as it should, but placing the receiver back to the ear still
leaves the speaker phone engaged. The only means to get back to the
ear piece is to locate the speaker button and double tap and then
double tap on iPhone receiver.
I am using the latest version of the app with the latest version of iOS.
Thank you in advance for any responses.

I do not see a way to do that.
You may want to contact Apple directly on that one.
I would have thought you could do it with the app.

Re: Ergonomic Bluetooth keyboards

2020-06-17 Thread Priscilla Garces (prisci)
Hello,
Hope you are doing well and staying healthy. ,
I just got a keyboard that is pretty ergonomic for me. It comes with an iPad
case that is made for the iPad 9.7 inch screen.
I got it on Amazon for about $50. The case of self rotates 360° so that you can
use it as a tablet.

iPad Keyboard Case 9.7 for iPad...
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084ZS6NGG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

They only have it in two colors, black and another one that I can’t recall.
It has a backlit keyboard which means that it can light up in the dark.
I have small hands so the keys are pretty big in nicely spaced out for me. so
really, it is like a little petite laptop I can just take with me anywhere
rather than lugging my MacBook Pro with other accessories on a longer commute
because it eventually takes a toll on my back after a while, especially when
you stand waiting for the bus or subway for a long time. I worry less and feel
safer on the longer commute when taking my iPad then I do when I take my
laptop especially if I decide to eventually go to the city and come home in
the evening for meetings and other activities in the future after this
pandemic. Any questions about the keyboard, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you.

Re: Is there a way within iOS to set up my data plan billing cycle?

2020-06-17 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I am not 100 percent sure what you are asking, but if you want to be able to
tell how much data you have used over cellular in a given period of time, go to
the very bottom of the cellular settings, and it says reset statistics. Or at
least that is the way it is in IOS 12. I do this on the first day of my billing
cycle to keep up with how much I use in a given month.

Ergonomic Bluetooth keyboards

2020-06-17 Thread Richard Turner
Has anyone run across a full sized ergonomic Bluetooth keyboard?
I have a client who has very large hands and uses an Ergonomic keyboard on his
Windows computer and would really like a Bluetooth one to use with the
iPad/iPhone. He does not need the numpad, but would take it if one exists.
I had looked around for someone else a few years ago but came up empty.

iClever sells a foldable one that they claim is ergonomic, but not if you are a
touch typist since the m and n keys are pushed way over so that the m is where
the n should be and the comma is where the m should be.
Not impressed.

RE: Choosing a phone company

2020-06-17 Thread Tony
I just noticed that Consumer Cellular is offering a $25 bonus to both a
referring customer and to a new customer at the present time.

I would be glad to refer anyone and I am sure anyone else on the list would
also help. Ask any of us if interested.

Subject: Re: Choosing a phone company

$100.

If you can handle the two minor drawbacks then I think It is a good service
option.
HTH,
Jeff

And if you have managed to answer a second call and you want to them return to
the first call you may first have to hide the on-screen keypad.
Often after you finish the second call and that person hangs up that also hangs
up the call on your device and all you have to do is find the Hold button which
if you double tap it would reconnect you with the first person.
It might be called something slightly differently, I could check at work where
I have two lines and I can call myself, but I'm not yet there.

Hi Carolyn, the unlimited plan that I misspoke about was for three phones with
35 GB shared for $103 which I think is excellent and this amount includes tax.
The AT plan that I am on now I pay $150 which includes tax and also includes
a 19% discount because I used to be a New York City public school teacher. So,
I’ll try it out on my own first and then see if it’s actually worth it.

Hey Kelly thank you very much for the information I really appreciate that I
was looking at it but I did order a Sim from consumer cellular just to try it
out. I could just take the AT some out and put in the other Sim and see how
it works. They do a plan with unlimited text and talk and 35 GB of data they
call there unlimited plan. For around $30. Which I think is very good. But I’ll
find out how it works.

You have to find the button called "Hold and Accept" which would be near the
bottom of the screen when a second call is coming in.
If you use a wired headset you can simply press the middle button of the remote
to switch to the new call.
If I don't use a headset I dfirst tell the caller I am talking to that I have
another call coming in and could he please hold on for a moment. Then I take
the phone away from my face and give it a second so it switches to speakerphone.
I then touch near th ebottom of the screen until I find any of the buttons like
End and Accept which would end the current call and pick up the new call, from
there I flick right until I get to Hold and Accept. It is useful if you are
with 2 friends or relatives to practice this, if you have a landline you could
first call yourself from the landline and pick up the call, then ask just 1
other person to call you as well. Then you have as long as you have until yoru
voice mail kicks in to check the screen, if you have a sighted person around
you could even ask them to tell you where the buttons are, e.g. bottom left,
bottom right etc.

Best regards,
Sieghard

First, it is a three finger double tap to mute VoiceOver speech.
I do not use WhatsApp, but in the notification settings for WhatsApp, you
should be able to pick a unique sound file.
If not, then you need to contact the WhatsApp developer.
The text message settings in contacts are only for native Apple apps, so it
makes perfect sense why it doesn't work for Whatsapp.
That is what the notification settings are for.

Yes sound files are picked alright. The thing is fibration patterns since I tend to mute the phone and turn VoiceOver speech off, when watching or listening to Media content on the phone. Thanks for the idea of contacting Whatsapp about this. Seems to me that Whatsapp on the competition is more open, since I heard from blind Android users who are able to set up different vibration patterns on Whatsapp, for contacts.   Enviado desde Correo para Windows 10 De: Richard TurnerEnviado: miércoles, 17 de junio de 2020 11:20 a. m.Para: viphone@googlegroups.comAsunto: Re: Trying to use iPhone as MultiPurpose device but First, it is a three finger double tap to mute VoiceOver speech.

Yes. It can be a juke box that fits in your pocket among so many other things.

And yes, this list has been awesome to me!

I really like my iPhone 8. Although I use my iPhone mainly as a media
player. However, it is so cool to be able to anser phone calls on the
same device that I can listen to my audio books or audio dramas. What
I usually do, is stop my Voice Over speech when I'm listening to
something so that if I do receive a phone call, I can answer it
quickly with the 2 finger double tap. I bought my iPhone because so
many blind people have them and they are all basically the same
device. This list has been and still is very helpful to me as I'm
still learning my iPhone 8. I still haven't updated to IOS 13.51, BUT
I'll probably update to 14 when it comes out.

Trying to use iPhone as MultiPurpose device but

It would be a dream come true, to be able to use our iPhones as a MultiPurpose device (reading books via Bard Mobile, Voice Dream Reader, listening to podcasts via the native podcast app, Spotify to music, watching video content on Netflix, Prime Video), but the thing that I’ve never been able to come to terms with, if why the vibrations patterns which natively when you get an IMessage, assigned to contacts, don’t work on other platforms like Whatsapp? Re: Choosing a phone company

2020-06-17 Thread Jeff Samco
I have not used Consumer Cellular. But I have
been very pleased with service through
Visible.com. I believe they are a wholly-owned
company by Verizon and use the Verizon cell
network and sell under-used band width. There are
two cons to consider and many pros.

The cons:
First, support is only available through 24 hour
chat on their website or through a smart phone app. No email, no phone number.
Second, if service gets congested in your area
then your data will be slowed in preference to
direct Verizon customers. I have noticed this,
especially during these stay at home months, when
in a rural area I frequent. But, service in town is very good.

The pros:
* Their plan provides unlimited calls, unlimited
texts and unlimited data, along with hot spot
service with no caps, all for one monthly price
of $40 or as low as $25. I particularly needed
hot spot capability so this feature was a big
draw; I have not been disappointed.
* That $40 monthly cost will be less if you join
a Party Pay group. A Party Pay group can have 2
members for a $5 discount per person each month;
3 members for $10 discount monthly and 4 members
for $15 discount monthly, or only $25. No
additional fees. There is no catch to joining a
Party Pay group. No one shares a bill or any
other connection except for getting the group
discount. I easily found an open Party Pay group
on Reddit and joined within a few minutes.
* After two months of paying for service they
send a virtual MasterCard worth $100.

If you can handle the two minor drawbacks then I
think It is a good service option.

HTH,
Jeff

Re: battery drain while listening to nls books

2020-06-17 Thread Wayne Merritt
I haven't noticed any significant battery drain when listening to BARD
books. I usually play the book in the app with the phone unlocked.
I've got Bluetooth on and use other apps that use more battery power
than the BARD Mobile app. I would agree with Richard if you notice a
huge drain in battery. Another idea is to see how many apps you are
running in the App Switcher, and if any of those use GPS and/or the
camera. If so, close them, and you should see your battery use go back

Can you block unwanted email? I believe a friend of mine got scammed or
something else but anyway, I removed her email address from my address book and
I still get email saying it's from her and it has a link they want you to go to
but of course, I don't. I have it going to junk email but I noticed I'm getting

RE: battery drain while listening to nls books

2020-06-17 Thread Richard Turner
I have no problem with battery drain because I press the side switch or power
button and let it play in the background, which is the suggested approach for
any audio if you don’t want the battery to drain.
You can get 6 or 8 times the battery life if you are listening while the phone
is locked.
If BARD stops playing when you lock the screen, check the BARD app settings
under audio settings and make sure play in background is on.
If it is and it still stops, toggle it off and on and reboot the phone and all
should be well.

RE: Answering a call while on call and not losing first call.

2020-06-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And if you have managed to answer a second call and you want to them return to
the first call you may first have to hide the on-screen keypad.
Often after you finish the second call and that person hangs up that also hangs
up the call on your device and all you have to do is find the Hold button which
if you double tap it would reconnect you with the first person.
It might be called something slightly differently, I could check at work where
I have two lines and I can call myself, but I'm not yet there.

Re: Choosing a phone company

2020-06-17 Thread juan mojena

RE: Answering a call while on call and not losing first call.

2020-06-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Best regards,
Sieghard

If you read Braille, there is a book titled "You and Your Apple Watch" from
National Braille Press and there is a tutorial you can purchase from Mystic
Access about the apple watch. I have both. Like them both but the Mystic Access
goes into a lot more detail about it and they are up to date. I put their
tutorial on a flash drive and can play it on the digital talking book machine.

I recommend the Logitech K380 or K480 as the keys are about the same size as on
a standard computer keyboard.
Often local stores like Target, Best Buy, carry them, or of course Amazon.

If he is using VoiceOver, none of the physical switches work when VoiceOver is
on.
There are Bluetooth keyboard commands to do everything.
I have both a document with keyboard commands and a list of what I think are
all of the voice control commands on my web site: www.turner42.com

This is a great place to be asking your questions.

What about enabling Voice Control in Accessibility Settings? When you first
enable the feature, it takes a couple of minutes to download the extra software
but after that you can ask Siri to turn the feature on as required - and there
is a voice control command to turn off voice control. Voice control commands
can be used to replace all physical tapping and swiping and works well with or
without VoiceOver. It is important either to use a headset or EarPods or else
be careful to say “Command Mode”, otherwise text edit fields get filled up with
every word you or VoiceOver say!

Hello everyone,

Thank you to those who have responded to my questions about the Apple watch. I
really appreciate it. For some reason, I wasn't expecting much of a response.
Or I thought you all would say it wasn't all that accessible. I am glad I was
wrong on this.

My main reasons for wanting to possibly get one, is so that I can track my
activities, and my sleep. I am wanting to start exercising a bit more than I
do. I think it would be very beneficial to me to possibly have a watch.

Also, I don't always sleep well. So being able to track this better, and
easier, would really come in handy.

I almost always have my phone with me though. So I don't know if I can justify
making a purchase like this.

As for the sleep tracking, does the watch somehow do this on it's own? Somehow
keep up with your sleep?

Or do you just have an App on your watch and phone, and you have to enter in
all the information yourself.

Also, what are some of the ways the watch tracks your activity?

If I were riding an exercise bike, would it be able to possibly help me to know
how fast I was going, and how many calories I burned? Or would I need an App to
help me to do this?

Also, how do you all respond to notifications, and text messages?

How can it be easier to respond to texts messages from the watch? Or how can it
be easier to read notifications?

I would assume that the watch has to be charged every so often?

If so, how does this work?

Also, someone mentioned only having 2 faces.

What does this mean?

Why would you possibly want different faces?

Sorry for all of the questions. I know there are a lot here. I hope you all
won't mind. I am fascinated though, and would really love to know more.

Thank you,

Terri

Hmm, I tried that this morning, and it didn’t work. I wonder if it’s because I
also had a podcast streaming at the same time, so Siri thought the stop request

Re: How accessible is an Apple watch

2020-06-17 Thread Terri Stimmel

Hello everyone,

Thank you to those who have responded to my questions about the Apple
watch. I really appreciate it. For some reason, I wasn't expecting much
of a response. Or I thought you all would say it wasn't all that
accessible. I am glad I was wrong on this.

My main reasons for wanting to possibly get one, is so that I can track
my activities, and my sleep. I am wanting to start exercising a bit more
than I do. I think it would be very beneficial to me to possibly have a
watch.

Also, I don't always sleep well. So being able to track this better, and
easier, would really come in handy.

I almost always have my phone with me though. So I don't know if I can
justify making a purchase like this.

As for the sleep tracking, does the watch somehow do this on it's own?
Somehow keep up with your sleep?

Or do you just have an App on your watch and phone, and you have to
enter in all the information yourself.

Also, what are some of the ways the watch tracks your activity?

If I were riding an exercise bike, would it be able to possibly help me
to know how fast I was going, and how many calories I burned? Or would I
need an App to help me to do this?

Also, how do you all respond to notifications, and text messages?

How can it be easier to respond to texts messages from the watch? Or how
can it be easier to read notifications?

I would assume that the watch has to be charged every so often?

If so, how does this work?

Also, someone mentioned only having 2 faces.

What does this mean?

Why would you possibly want different faces?

Sorry for all of the questions. I know there are a lot here. I hope you
all won't mind. I am fascinated though, and would really love to know more.

Thank you,

Terri

Hi everyone,
Hope all of you are doing well. I too have the same questions as I do not own
an apple watch. However, I am looking into purchasing it in the future. I was
going to purchase one, but unfortunately, the pandemic hit so I am unable to
try one on for myself. Also, I have an added challenge because I have small
wrists since I am very petite. Does the Apple Watch fit small wrists?
Also, did you buy the EarPods when you got the Apple Watch in order to hear the
VoiceOver on the Apple Watch while in crowded settings?
How are you able to hear VoiceOver through the Apple Watch if you don’t own
EarPods in noisy environments?
Can the Apple Watch serve as a suplemental mobility aid for navigation in
addition to other tools like a cane or service dog?
What were the primary reasons for purchasing the Apple Watch?
For those of you who are totally blind, what are the most important uses for
your Apple Watch?

Hope this helps.
Stay safe and take care,

Priscilla

My first thought would be to look in the Touch setings. You'll find that
button in the accessibility settings and it leads to a large group of
options which sound to me like what you want. You can change how gestures
work and do other things related to touch screen difficulties. I don't know
where you get the special control switches but imagine they'd be on Amazon
among other places. The Apple store would certainly have at least one or
two types in their accessories but they tend to sell things more
expensively than elsewhere. Hope that helps a bit.

Hi I am wondering if there are any accessible games for the Apple TV fourth
generation. If so what is available and which games do you like to play on the
Apple TV box.
Also other than prime Netflix YouTube etc. what other apps do you enjoy using
on this device for fun cool stuff.
Thanks.

Re: Asking for a treadmill recommendation which can be paired with iPhone

2020-06-17 Thread Cristobal Munoz
I have the Nautilus T618 model.

Nautilus Treadmill Series
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077J3F1DK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nFF6EbK6A3YNB
It looks to be out of stock in Amazon at the moment.
It has a fully accessible iOS app Where you can review your statistics after
every workout. I’m not aware of any treadmill with an associated app where you
can review your stats in real time though.

I like this treadmill for a lot of reasons including the app accessibility.
Also, the buttons are nice and big and tactile. There are controls on the
handrails that control speed and incline which is very convenient instead of
always having to reach for the front consul.
I’m 6 foot two 235 pounds and it’s a good size for someone my size. Wide and
long enough deck for taller people with a longer stride. Also has a capacity of
350 pounds. In my case, I like throwing on a weighted backpack for an extra
workout. All in all, a very good machine.

Re: LOL, what good is the mute switch if Voice Over shouts out the name of the incoming call

2020-06-17 Thread Joshua Hendrickson

It is important either to use a headset or EarPods or else
be careful to say “Command Mode”, otherwise text edit fields get filled up with
every word you or VoiceOver say!

ipad adjustments

2020-06-17 Thread Joe Paton
Hello.
first a little background.

I am working with a person who suffers from ptsd after an injury caused
by an explosion.
apart from the psychological injuries, the physical consequences mainly,
are that his hands shake, and navigating the touch screen is very
dificult.

so, is it possible, and how can the touch screen be made less sensitive,
or delayed action imposed on the device to allow location and activation
of icons and other app elements on the screen, and within an app.
Flicking is really dificult for him, and of course explore by touch with
hand tremmer causes consequences that develop frustration
We can use a bluetooth keyboard to enter data, so that is not so much of
an issue. were there keyboard commands to navigate programs and home screens
that would be desirable, but I can't find out if this is possible,
so I guess not. Guessing is of course no use at all.

We can use siri for a number of tasks of course, but the locations where
the device can be used may not always be condusive to dictation.
I have looked on applevis, but in the limited time I have, I haven't
turned up much that is solving these problems.
There are specialised switches, so where to find out about these, there
availability and if they would help, would be useful.
Many thanks.

Joe

when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God has
a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great
gifts. We don't always know what God's plans are for us. We just know
that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best.
