Re: Apple accessibility reply regarding haptic time on Apple Watch

2023-12-24 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi all,
I have a Series 7 Apple Watch (41 mm). I am still running Watch OS 9, as I
gathered that there were some bugs with version 10.
I use Taptic Time frequently, and pretty consistently. I also have Sleep Focus
enabled, but in my case this does not alter the number of taps required:
regardless of the time, I always do a one-finger double tap for hours and
minutes, and a one-finger triple tap for just minutes.
If I want the watch to remain silent, I turn speech off using a three-finger
double tap, the same gesture as on the phone. Haptic Time works fine when
speech is turned off. My watch is not an SE, by the way, it's the standard
model. I hope this is helpful.
Best,
Nicky

Re: Questions regarding my Apple watch

2023-08-31 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,
The taptic time is working pretty reliably for me on my Apple Watch Series 7,
thank goodness. I find that it helps to do the double tap gesture slightly more
slowly than normal, i.e. leaving a slightly longer gap between the first and
second tap, but not long enough for it to be interpreted as a single tap and
set VoiceOver off. When I sleep with my partner at night, I turn speech off
using the three-finger double tap, and the taptic time almost always works for
me. I do the same at work.
HTH,
Nicky

RE: Perplexing Issue With Languages

2023-02-20 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Lielle,

Thanks, that’s interesting. I have several languages in my rotor, and obviously
I can switch to any of them using the rotor at any time; but I thought that
Tali was specifically wanting Hebrew to be recognized as such automatically
when the rotor language was set to her default English voice, without having to
switch the rotor to Hebrew. You’re right, the automatic detection only works if
the text has been given the correct language tags by the developers. On my
iPhone, if I turn Detect Languages off, I always have to use the rotor to
change languages, and I had the impression that that’s what Tali was trying to
avoid having to do. Very sorry if I misunderstood and caused confusion – I have
quite a talent for that at times!

Best

Nicky

In order the swich languages will work you need to turn "detect languages" off.

The ditect languages works only when you use mail or surfe on a website.

It's relized in language tags and some of the times website developers don't
know about that.

there isn’t a language detection bug in the latest update.

As others have said, the relevant setting is under Voiceover/Speech, where
Detect Languages needs to be set to ON in order for the language changes to be
detected automatically.

Apologies if I’m stating the obvious, but have you turned your phone off

resolve this kind of inexplicable weirdness and I’m sometimes inclined to
forget to do it when something isn’t working properly.

I hope you manage to find a solution.

Hi Kevin,

I have an AppleWatch and I’ll try to give you some information. As for the
hourly thin, i don’t think there is a way to get it to tell you what time it is
on the hour without the sound. There are some tutorials on AppleVis that were
done back in 2015 that are somewhat valuable today. You can learn about watch
faces and the like. I know that mystic access also has a paid tutorial that you
can get that is more current. Last but not least, if you read Braille or want
to download something from the National Braille press, Anna Dresner wrote a
book called Watch Without looking or something to that affect. That should get
you started. There are also a couple watch email groups that you can ask
questions to. I’ll give you the subscription address to one of them. It is:

Problem solved, was: RE: Lost speech on my Apple TV 4th gen

2020-12-15 Thread Nicola Sanders
Thanks again, Reggie, for your helpful suggestions. Having tried everything, I
called Apple Accessibility. The guy was very patient and helpful and we used
the camera on my iPhone to view the TV screen. Having tried all kinds of
things, including a software update, we ended up drawing a blank and simply
doing a factory reset of the Apple TV. He was mystified and would have loved to
find out what had caused the problem, as he hadn’t come across it before. Once
I had done the factory reset, I was able to turn VoiceOver on and all is now
working fine again – until next time!

Thanks to all for your patience and take care,

Nicky

Nicolas, have you tried shutting your Apple TV down? Take out the cord that
goes into the Apple TV not the HDMI but the other one that shuts it down wait
for a couple minutes and then put it back in. Now let it reboot. Sometimes just
a reboot on some of these devices will take care of any problem. I’m looking
through my settings right now to see if I can help any other way, but since you
can’t get to the settings, which is a problem, I’m not sure if I’m going to
find anything that doesn’t require the settings part of it. Just thought of
some thing. I wonder if somehow you got your Siri shut off in settings.
Grasping at straws here. I think that there is no other way to shut it off
except in settings or from the remote, but I’ve never had this happen. I know
that on the phone you can shut it down completely with a home button or the
side button depending on which one you have, but I think the Apple TV can just
be totally shut off either in settings or on the remote. I don’t think there’s
a mute on the Apple TV like there is on iOS. Still thinking though. I am also a
relatively new user of the Apple TV so I probably don’t know as much as some
people do.

Did you try asking Siri to turn it off and then back on? Alternatively click
the button with the ring around it 3 times. If nothing happens click it 3 times
again and see if voice comes back. None of this works call apple accessibility.

RE: Magictap gesture not stopping playback of Overcast podcasts

2020-09-22 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Alan,
I'm not experiencing this problem myself. I have an iPhone SE 2nd gen running
iOS14, and the MagicTap gesture is starting and stopping Overcast playback with
no problems so far.
I hope you manage to resolve the issue, preferably without having to reset all
settings again! :-) I had to do that myself the other day, on the advice of
Apple Accessibility. In my case it was really necessary, as I was having an
extreme version of the focus issue that made my phone virtually unusable in
some respects. All sorted now, thank goodness.
Best,
Nicky

Hi List,

I've noticed since upgrading to iOS 14 that the two finger double tap magictap
gesture doesn't stop playback of a playing Overcast podcast. Is anyone else
experiencing this behaviour?

Thanks in advance for letting me know and I'll report this to Overcast and
Apple Accessibility after I hear from others.

Re: IOS 13.6 question

2020-07-17 Thread Nicola Sanders
I thought it simply depended whether sounds were turned off. When I press the
power button to wake up the phone, it almost always speaks the time, unless
there is a notification on the screen; but I almost always keep my VoiceOver
sounds turned off. My phone also says "screen locked" when I press the power
button to lock the phone, when sounds are turned off. Sorry if I'm missing the
point.
Best,
Nicky

2020-06-06 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,
If you were looking for a certain specific email, it would probably be quicker
to use the search function in the Mail app: you would presumably know something
about the message, such as who it was from, or what was in the subject line, so
you could search for those words in the editfield. The scroll bar is more
useful if you want to move through your list of messages in fairly big steps.
For example, supposing I had been very ill at the beginning of April and had
been unable to cope with emails for around a week: I may now wish to go back
and deal with the messages that had come in around that time, so I could swipe
down using the vertical scroll bar. After each swipe, which would move me down
by 10%, I would touch the middle of the screen and listen to the date of the
message that I landed on; once I got close to the date I wanted, such as 1
April in my example, I would then use the three-finger swipe up or down in
order to find the messages with that date. Of course, you can also filter your
emails so that you only see unread messages, but that's not strictly related to
the scroll bar.
I'm probably making this sound more complicated than it is, and sorry if my
example is a bit contrived, but I think you'll get the idea. The scroll bar is
just one tool among others, but I find that it can be very useful in many
situations: today I used it to navigate more quickly through a food delivery
app, for example.
Best,
Nicky

Can you give me a little more instructions about finding a certain email using
the scroll bar because this is what I would probably use it for. This does make
sense but I just want a little more help in understanding about finding say a
certain email.

Vertical scroll bar, was: RE: Removing the clutter on The message window

2020-06-06 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Shirley,
Sure, I'll give it a try. I've edited the subject line to reflect the shift in
topic. I'll explain how the scroll bar works and give a couple of examples of
how I use it.
As you know, the vertical scroll bar is a very narrow strip running down the
right-hand edge of the screen. If you are at the top of a list (or a document,
a webpage or whatever), when you touch the vertical scroll bar, VoiceOver will
say "vertical scroll bar, 0%". When you swipe down on the scroll bar with one
finger, it moves you down through the list in increments of 10%; so however
long your list or page may be, you can get from top to bottom with just ten
one-finger swipes. The alternative would be to swipe up using three fingers,
but that gesture moves you in far smaller increments, just a screen at a time,
and so it takes a lot longer to move through the list and locate what you're
looking for.
One example where I find this useful is a TV app in the UK, called Sky+. In the
TV guide section there are hundreds of channels, numbered 1 to 999, with a few
gaps in the numbering. Supposing I'm I want to read the channels starting from
number 500 onwards: I touch the vertical scroll bar and swipe down to around
50%, and I know I won't be far off. I touch the middle of the screen to read
one of the channel numbers currently displayed, and I can then use the
three-finger swipe up or down to find the exact location. If I were to do a
three-finger swipe through the whole list, it would take me far longer, as each
screen only consists of around six channels. Also, I don't find it that easy to
use that gesture repeatedly and very fast, and I'm inclined to lose focus and
have to tap the middle of the screen before continuing. There are no such
problems with the vertical scroll bar.
I also find it useful when navigating through my email inbox. I have far too
many messages in there and am in the process of cleaning them up. Obviously I
can search for a specific message, but I may just want to look at the emails
that I received around a certain time. Again, the three-finger swipe would take
ages.
I often use the scroll bar to find my place in a long document or newspaper
article if I get interrupted. I use it with large web pages as well, as it can
often be difficult to navigate through the whole page by headings. In many
situations I can do a three-finger tap on the middle of the screen to hear
roughly where I am, e.g. "rows 35 to 41 of 72"; next time I want to find that
location, I use the scroll bar to go to 50%, and I know I won't be far out.
Note that the scroll bar works in the opposite direction to the three-finger
swipe: you swipe down on the scroll bar, but up when using the traditional
swipe gesture, to move from the top to the bottom.
I hope that made some sense - if not, let me know and I'll try to clarify.
HTH,
Nicky

Maybe I'm the only one, but personally I love the vertical scroll bar! I find
it really useful for navigating very long lists - much quicker than endless
three-finger swiping. Perhaps it should be an option in Settings.

Mine does say "screen locked", but only because I have sounds turned off in the
rotor. I got used to having the sounds off because I often use a Braille
display, and now I find them annoying. It's all a question of personal

Re: Voice Dream Reader problem: Duplicate folder labels

2020-04-29 Thread Nicola Sanders
Thanks. Likewise, I also got a reply that he's looking into it.
Quick question: Would the "reset all settings" require me to reorganize all my
apps on the home screen into folders? If so, I was thinking that I could do it
the coward's way:
1: Turn off iCloud sync and uninstall Voice Dream on phone B; 2: Reset all
settings on phone A; 3: Assuming that the duplicates problem is resolved on
phone A, reinstall Voice Dream on phone B and sync with iCloud;
4: Back up phone B to iCloud and restore phone A from that backup.
Anyway, it's nearly midnight here, so we'll see what happens. It's more of an
intriguing problem than a really serious disaster.

Hi all,
Thanks for your thoughts, experiences and suggestions. Richard, I may indeed
get in touch with Apple Accessibility, but think I'll wait to hear back from
Winston first. I also thought of using Be My Eyes on one phone to examine the
screen of the other!
Alan, in my case I have iCloud sync turned on. I too well remember the
horrendous problems that Mary had with her library. But since my library is
quite small and I make sure I back up anything important, I decided to go for
the "feel the fear and do it anyway" approach and stick with iCloud sync in my
case. My problemis nowhere near as serious as Mary's, as I can access all my
content and haven't lost anything. Famous last words!
I have noticed that a folder that I added about a year ago hasn't been
duplicated, which makes me think that the problem may have happened some time
ago.
You may have spotted that I'm rather reluctant to reset all settings, as I
don't fancy all that work, but I may not be able to avoid it forever.
I'll keep you posted.
Nicky

Re: Voice Dream Reader problem: Duplicate folder labels

2020-04-29 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi, thanks to both, interesting that you've had similar problems.
Richard, I don't have access to physical sighted assistance at the moment
because of the lockdown, but I think my problem may be slightly different: The
duplicate folder names are not adjacent to each other, but spread throughout
the very long list at more or less regular intervals in a sequence. I can move
through the list using a three-finger swipe, and if i do a three-finger single
tap, VoiceOver will say something like "items 95 to 99 of 322", reflecting the
extent to which I've swiped through the list. This leads me to think that the
folder names are actually visible in my case, as opposed to mere figments of
VoiceOver's imagination:
You're definitely right to counsel caution, and I'll contact Winston and wait
for the response before doing anything rash. I'll report back to the list, if
you're interested.
Best, Nicky

Voice Dream Reader problem: Duplicate folder labels

2020-04-28 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi all,

I meant to post this yesterday, but life got in the way. I have a strange
problem with Voice Dream Reader: as per the subject line, I have discovered
that I have multiple instances of the same folder name in my list of
folders. I do not have duplicates of the actual files in the folders, and
the "all items" list shows the right number of items in my library. I have
around 15 folders, but in my folder list there are more than 200 items - at
least, there were until I started to clean them up.

If I delete one of the duplicate folder labels, all the instances of that
folder name are removed and the files in that folder are "moved" to the "no
folder" list. I realize that these are not actual physical folders, but they
are more like the labels used in Gmail, I assume. Having all these duplicate
folder names is very inconvenient, as I discovered to my cost when I wanted
to reorder my folders alphabetically: newly created folders are placed at
the bottom of the list, and it is really tricky to move them all the way up
from position 200 to, let's say, position 10 in the list.

I think I should be able to straighten things out by making sure my "no
folder" list is empty, deleting a folder, recreating it with the same name,
selecting the contents of the "no folder" list and moving it into the folder
I just created. However, I am really wondering whether anyone else has had a
similar problem, and what I can do in future to prevent it from happening.

A bit of background: I have iCloud Drive on my PC and I usually add items to
my Voice Dream library by placing them in the Loader subfolder of the Reader
folder in iCloud Drive. I also add items to my library using share sheets
from other apps. I happen to have two iPhones, both using VDR and syncing
with iCloud, and my gut feeling is that this could be part of the problem. I
always try to avoid having Voice Dream open on both phones at the same time,
but I cannot guarantee that this has never occurred inadvertently. I can
open the Library folder in iCloud Drive on the PC, but I would hesitate to
try to edit it without knowing exactly what I was doing, as I would really
prefer not to lose files if I can help it. My library is not very large -
only about 320 items, many of which are fairly small files - so I don't
think that's the problem.

I will contact Voice Dream Support about this, but I thought I'd ask on here
as well, in case anyone has had a similar experience. I believe that these
folder labels must have been proliferating for a while without me even
realizing it, which I know sounds rather strange! It's easy enough for me to
check how many folders I have by doing a three-finger single tap, but I just
never thought to do it. It certainly explains why I could only ever find new
folders by starting from the bottom of the list.

All the best and sorry for the long post,

Nicky

Re: transfering items from all items to folders in Dream Reader

2020-04-27 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Vicki,
Just to add to Richard's helpful instructions: In any list of files, including
the "no folder", you should find an Edit button near the top, just after the
folder name. Double tap this button and you can then select any files in the
list by double tapping them. You will hear the word "selected" for each item,
so you can easily check to make sure you have chosen the correct files.
At the bottom of the screen you should find options such as Move To Folder,
Delete and, I think, Add to Reading List. Double tap "Move to Folder" and you
can then just double tap on your desired destination folder. Repeat the process
until your "no folder" list is empty.
I hope this is comprehensible and good luck! I am having a weird Voice Dream
problem myself, but will post about it later in a separate thread.
Best,
Nicky

Re: notifications repeating

2019-12-19 Thread Nicola Sanders
Re the scrub gesture: Keep in mind that it can be a very small movement, and
certainly doesn't have to cover much of the screen area at all. I place two
fingertips close together, anywhere on the screen, and make a quick "right left
right" movement, with both fingers moving together. It's just as if I were
trying to scrub something clean. As Sieghard said, it doesn't have to be right
left right, it can be down up down, left right left, etc. No need to make a
zigzag, I usually move my fingers over the same area with each of the three
parts of the quick movement. it's just a straight line: right left right, in my
case. The main thing to remember is that it's a short, quick, compact gesture.
Hope I haven't confused things even more and that this message helps someone.
If not, feel free to scrub it.
Best,
Nicky

Re: What is every ones fave voice they like to use for voice over?

2019-06-10 Thread Nicola Sanders

Just to be different, I like the British English Kate voice. I also like the US
Siri female voice. I'm really not very keen on Samantha, and I don't like
Danial, for some reason. I like Ivona Amy, but of course, that's only available
with apps like Voice Dream Reader, not with VoiceOver. It's all very subjective
and I'm so glad we have plenty of choices these days.
Best,
Nicky

Re: Voices on voice dream

2019-05-05 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,
Just chiming in re the Siri voices: I believe that Aaron, and his female
counterpart Nicky, were the official US Siri voices prior to the latest
versions, which came out in either iOS 12 or 11, I can't remember which. Nicky
and Aaron, plus their equivalents in other languages, are available for use in
Voice Dream Reader, and I think this was also the case before they were demoted
from official Siri voice status. It's just the latest Siri voices which Apple
has not made available to third-party developers. So I think Mary and Richard
are both right: Aaron is now just another voice, but he used to be a Siri voice
and was available in VDR at the time.
Sorry for the long message and please feel free to correct any unintentional
misinformation.
All the best,
Nicky, but not the former Siri voice, I'm afraid I sound far too British, LOL!

Re: Mark's Recommendation for a Great iPad Screen Protector

2019-04-27 Thread Nicola Sanders

For what it's worth, I'' fully endorse this recommendation. I have an amFilm
screen protector on my iPhone 6S and I think it has the nicest texture of any
that I have tried over the years. They're very reasonably priced and apparently
they're easy to apply. I did ask a sighted person to do mine, as I didn't trust
myself to be able to avoid bubbles forming under it.

Re: Unable to buy anything on Amazon using iPhone

2019-01-03 Thread Nicola Sanders

Hi all,

This is a very annoying problem. I recently made a purchase using the app and I
was only able to select the address by locating the "send to this address"
button on the screen, turning VoiceOver off, touching the screen once at the
exact location and immediately turning VoiceOver back on. Obghiously you have
to be very careful when doing this, as in my case the relevant button was very
close to the "delete this address" button, but I was lucky and it worked first
time. Of course, I realize that this workaround is not an acceptable solution
and I'll contact Amazon about it as well. I only mention it in case, like me,
you're really stuck and need to get the job done without waiting for access to
a PC.

Yes, I can confirm that Airplay also works on my Sonos PlayBase, which is

Re: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Nicola Sanders
Thanks, Richard and Maria, I think the reason why I'm not seeing the length of
episodes in Overcast is because I stream them. In Downcast, you can see the
length regardless of whether you stream or download, and I do some of each.
Richard, am I right in assuming that you download your episodes in Overcast?

Thanks,

Nicky

Re: Most accessible podcast app?

2018-10-14 Thread Nicola Sanders

Hi all,

I use both Overcast and Downcast, but personally I have a slight preference for
Downcast. I love the Overcast effects which have been discussed earlier in this
thread, but with Downcast I really like being able to see the length of each
episode before I start to play it. I am subscribed to far too many podcasts,
some in each app, and I would love to know how to check the episode length in
Overcast in order to make maximum use of time. I freely admit that my
preference for Downcast may have a lot to do with familiarity. I like to be
able to stream some podcast feeds and download others, and at the moment I
can't remember whether this is possible in Overcast. Downcast has a lot of
individual feed customisations, such as the number of episodes to keep, when to
refresh the feed, etc. I think they're both great apps.

Best

Nicky

Re: Continous Reading in Voice Dream

2018-03-20 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

Obviously I don't have this problem when using the Play button, but I often use
Voice Dream Reader with a Braille display for work-related tasks and I always
have a few words repeated at the end of each screen of text. I can confirm that
it's quite annoying and it slows me down significantly, but I agree that it
would be even worse to have words missed out. I'll contact the developer to see
whether there is a solution, as I should have done months ago, and I suggest
that others do the same. We all have different use cases and what may seem a
detail for some could be quite serious for others.

Best

Nicky

Yes, I have noticed this behavior. In fact, it started I think after I
noticed and reported that the last few words on every page were being
skipped. After the next update, I started noticing the repetition of
the last few words on every page. I figured it was better than missing
 words so never reported it.

Re: Reading words IOs 11.x

Pablo, I think you may be confusing the iOS and Android navigation methods,
which is easily done if you've had experience with both platforms. I'm fairly
sure that iOS has not changed in this respect.

Re: Screen Locked

2017-09-08 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

I think this just goes to show how we're all creatures of habit. I often have
to work in a virtually silent environment and so I use my iPhone with a Braille
display. I found it a hassle to remember to turn sounds on and off each time in
addition to turning the speech off, and so I just stopped turning the sounds
back on after a while. I've got very used to not having them and now I've
basically forgotten what I'm supposed to need them for. I think Sieghard is
right, Apple should provide more flexibility and allow people to choose whether
they have a "screen locked" message or a sound, regardless of other settings. I
like my "screen locked" message, mainly because it's what I'm used to.

Re: is the tunein update safe?

Hi Davy,

I haven't had a chance to test every single feature in great detail, but as far
as I can tell, the update is fine and everything is just as accessible as it
was before, if not more so. I was a bit hsitant about updating as well, but I'm
very happy with it.

RE: Voice Dream Reader and Using Siri Voices?

2016-11-02 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

Yes, I can confirm that my Siri voices are working fine in Voice Dream and, as
Mary said, they are referred to by their names: The US male and female voices
are Arron and Nicky (but I promise she isn’t me, I’m British); I think the UK
Siri voices are named Arthur and Martha, and the Australian voices are Gordon
and Catherine. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong. If I have
downloaded the enhanced Siri voice, then both versions are available in Voice
dream, i.e. Aaron and Aaron Enhanced, etc.

Subject: Voice Dream Reader and Using Siri Voices?

Hello List,

Let me say up front that I have all the voices I'm asking about downloaded to
my iPhone 6 running iOS 10.1.1. I'm using the latest version of Voice Dream
Reader and was perusing the available voices under the manage voices setting.
Although I see all of the voices I've purchased and all the iOS voices I've
downloaded in the available list, I don't see any Siri voices listed. Aren't we
able to use the Siri voices with Voice Dream Reader? Does anyone else using
Voice Dream see the Siri voices in their list of available ones?

The other thing I wish Voice Dream would do is save any sample text you type in
to hear the voice speak a sample. I see that the voices I've purchased from
Voice Dream all contain default sample text giving their name and a line about
being one of the available voices. None of the iOS voices have any sample text
to speak and if you type some in, it isn't saved to hear later. You have to
input it each time.

I'm just wanting to confirm that others can't use the Siri voices with Voice
Dream nor can they save any sample text they input.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

RE: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

2016-10-25 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Alan,

I have a glass screen protector on my iPhone 6S and I’m very happy with it. I’m
afraid I don’t remember the brand, as it was part of my Christmas present from
my brother. I know that it was a reputable brand which I had heard of, and in
the medium price range.

I do use 3D Touch and it works fine for me. I didn’t do a “before and after”
comparison, as I had only had the phone for a couple of days when the protector
was applied and I hadn’t experimented with 3D Touch at that stage. I haven’t
noticed any lack of screen sensitivity or responsiveness on my 6S compared to
previous iPhones, on which I used film screen protectors. I have a light touch,
so I think I would soon have become frustrated with an unresponsive screen.

HTH,

Nicky

Subject: Opinions about glass screen protectors and affect on 3D touch

Hello List,

I've only ever used a film screen protector on the two iPhones I've owned. I'm
starting to look at accessories for the iPhone 7 which I'm planning to get at
the beginning of February and wanted to get opinions from those who have used
glass screen protectors on their iPhones.

I've always considered glass screen protectors to be more than I needed with
the care I take with my iPhone and have never been fully convinced that they
don't interfere with the touch sensitivity of the iPhone. However, I don't want
to make assumptions about such things and would prefer to get comments from
those on the list who actually use a glass screen protector with their iDevice.
I'm particularly interested in the opinions of those who have them with models
6S and higher that have 3D Touch capability and if they have noticed any affect
the glass screen protector has on 3D Touch efficacy.

I see on Amazon a very wide range of prices of glass screen protectors from $6
up and one from Tech21 who makes the case I use which goes for about $35 for
the iPhone 7. This is quite a range and I'm having a hard time reconciling the
differences which account for such a range. I'd love to hear from anyone who
has recommendations about a specific glass screen protector model and about
what it costs.

Thanks in advance for any comments you can provide.

Re: Question for voice dream reader users who lost your folders after upgrade

2016-04-06 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

You're right, now that I think about it, the files that I uploaded did indeed
end up in the folder which had focus in Voice Dream. Now that I understand how
it works, I think this is a nice feature: even if you forget which folder last
had focus when you upload new material, when you open Voice Dream again, it
should be easy to find it in the open folder, select it and move it to the
desired location. I look forward to playing with this again later today, when I
get home from work.

2016-04-05 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Mary,

Yes, I went ahead and re-created my folders. It wasn't such a big risk for me,
as almost all my items were showing up in the No Folder list and my library
isn't very large. It seems to have worked fine, as far as I can tell.

Today I uploaded some documents into my library using iCloud Drive on the PC.
This worked well and was very convenient, but the new files showed up in one of
the folders that I had created, whereas I would have expected them to be in the
No Folder list. I will need to test this further before writing to Winston.

Best,

Nicky

RE: Voice dream reader iCloud sync lost my folders

2016-04-02 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Anna,

I have now created several folders and moved items into them on my phone, but
the Library folder in iCloud Drive on my PC still looks the same, i.e. with
each item in its own folder. I think this may be because the folders in VDR are
actually more like tags attached to the files, rather than actual physical
folders. At the moment I'm not brave enough to move anything in the library
folder on the PC, as my library on my phone is well on the way to being sorted
and I don't want to tempt providence! Many thanks for your help with this.

Best

Nicky

Hi Nicky,

My books are arranged just like yours, with a folder whose name is numbers
containing the book and a metadata file. I have never used folders in Voice
dream Reader. I thought that maybe putting some of those book folders into a
folder in iCloud Drive might put them in analogous folders in Voice Dream
Reader, but I don't know whether this would work.

Anna

Hi Eric,

I've had a look in the Tweetings settings. Under Look and Feel, if you go down
to the Media heading, you should find a few settings relating to videos. The
first of these is Autoplay Videos, which can be toggled on or off.

Occasionally, I get a tweet with an imbedded video with sound. I cannot
figure how to shut them up. Better,, how could I stop them from playing
altogether. I have looked at everything in settings I can think could make a
difference and have found nothing.

It seems to me they only quit when there are enough new tweets to move the
offending one off screen.

Thanks for help.

those who did not lose their folder structure, can you change the sort order in
you're all items list?

RE: Voice dream reader iCloud sync lost my folders

2016-04-02 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

Thanks, Anna, the idea of selecting everything in All Items and moving it all
into No Folder makes a lot of sense to me. Mary, I'm sure you're right, I'm
afraid it's unlikely that you'll see any further changes to your No Folder if
it's already been that way for several hours.

A slight correction to my earlier post: I have been sorting out my own library
and I have noticed that there were in fact three items which were still not
showing up in No Folder, so my statement that everything was there was not
quite accurate - my apologies! I was able to track the missing items by
filtering by My Sources.

Also, I can confirm that I can't change the sort order in No Folder, which is
stuck on New Date. I wonder if people who did not lose their folder structure
are able to change the sort order in No Folder?

I have looked at the Reader/Library folder in iCloud Drive on my PC. There
seems to be a folder for each item, containing a metadata file as well as the
actual file constituting the item. The folder names consist of strings of
numbers, so you don't know what the item is until you open its folder, which I
think would make editing rather tricky. Perhaps it works differently on the Mac.

Nicky

I also wonder whether the folders coincide with folders in your iCloud drive.
If you have a Mac, it might be easier to use it to move the books into folders
than to do it on the phone.

Hi Mary,

No, I didn't leave Voice Dream in the foreground or keep my screen unlocked. In
the What's New file I noticed a reference to the app being in the foreground
during the sync process, but I understood it to mean that if VDR WAS in the
foreground, it should only be on one device, in order to avoid conflicts.

Best,

Hi Nicky,
Thanks for the idea about waiting on the no folder filter. I guess it can't
hurt. Did you leave the voice dream app in the foreground with the screen
unlocked? I had locked my screen and not left the app in the foreground. I
don't remember seeing anything in the what's new about having to do any of
those things once the sink process started.

RE: Voice Dream and iTunes

2016-04-02 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

Just to add to Richard's information below: I had to deal with this a few weeks
ago when I needed to back up my VDR library. I had to do an awful lot of
tabbing in order to get past all my apps and to find the file sharing options.
I found the process rather inaccessible and I kept receiving an error message
from iTunes when I tried to copy the library, having finally managed to locate
it.

Winston recommended that I use a program called iExplorer, rather than iTunes.
It's available on both Mac and Windows and it allows you to navigate your
devices and iTunes backups with an interface which is a bit like Windows
Explorer, and certainly a lot easier than iTunes for this purpose. I'm pretty
sure it was free, and it should allow you to paste content into the Documents
folder in Voice Dream on your device. Obviously your device has to be connected
to the computer, with iTunes running.

HTH,

Nicky

RE: Voice dream reader iCloud sync lost my folders

2016-04-02 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi all,

I haven't posted to this list in a very long time and so I lost my posting
privileges, but Mark has kindly sorted things out for me.

Mary, you have my sympathies too. I also lost my folder structure, but I'm
fortunate in that my library is much smaller than yours. I've made a start on
recreating my folders, and in my case it's turning out to be easier than I
expected: After the iCloud sync, at first not all my items were showing up in
the No Folder filter, but when I came back to it later, they were all listed
there. This meant that I could use the No Folder filter as my starting point,
and the list got shorter each time I selected a group of items and moved them
into a new folder. I believe you said that only a few items showed up in your
No Folder list, but it might be worth checking it again, just in case it has
rectified itself, as mine did.

Incidentally, I share your delight at getting your Ivona voices back, as I also
lost my Ivona voices when I installed a full backup from my iPhone 5s onto my
new 6S. I was finally able to sort it out a few weeks before the update, but I
had to back up the library and reinstall the app from scratch.

Good luck with the folders,

Nicky

Thanks, richard, for the sympathy. Now I wonder if it is worth my time to
re-create my folder structure until Winston has definitely found and fixed the
bug. If you want to talk about cursing, if I redo this whole structure, and
then lose it again when I sync up to iCloud, you are going to be able to hear
me all the way up in Portland from here in Eugene when the cursing starts. The
worst thing about this deal, aside from the loss itself, is that in order to
re-create the folders, I'm going to have to go through each and every item in
all items each time I want to move things into a folder. That is because when
you move things into folders, they stay in all items, just like what happens
with Amazon Kindle. I love how iBooks does it. Move that sucker out of books,
and it's really moved. So the next time you go through your big fat books list
in order to move things into another folder, you do not have to see the items
you just moved previously. I actually do see the merit of an all items folder.
I just wish there were something equivalent to the iBooks "books" folder. After
all, this is just a matter of index pointers. It's not like they are actually
having several copies of each item.

RE: ENDING PHONECALLS

2014-12-19 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

Have people tried ending a call by pressing the power/lock button twice in
quick succession? This works reliably for me in iOS7, but I haven't upgraded
to iOS8 yet, for reasons which are irrelevant for this topic, so I have no idea
whether it still works. Perhaps it's worth a try.

Both the 2 finger double tap and the sleep switch work well for me.

As was already said, take the phone away from your ear, wait for the speaker to
turn on, and then do the 2 finger double tap. The 2 finger double tap can take
a bit of practice. Your fingers should be spread a bit apart when you do the
double tap.

The sleep switch is the exact opposite, it won't hang up a call unless
voiceover is on and the phone is at your ear.

The hangup button used to stretch across the whole bottom of the screen. Now
it's just a button in the middle of the screen. If you place your finger at
the bottom of the screen in the middle and draw a line up, you should also find
the button.

I hope this helps,

Jim

I use that all the time. You take the phone away from your ear, give it a
second so the screen can come back on (it is off so your cheek doesn't press
buttons), then double tap two fingers anywhere on the screen. If you do it
too quickly after lowering the phone, the screen won't yet be on and you
might think the gesture isn't working. Remember that, when you lower the
phone, it will switch to speakerphone mode automatically. I normally put my
right thumb over the speaker as I do this to muffle any sounds from the other
caller, especially if I'm hanging up on a voicemail prompt or similarly loud
 noise.

worse for me as Audio Ducking is on, so now I really can't hear the button
I'm trying to locate at the end of a call and even pressing the on/off switch
 doesn't always work.

At one stage the buttons, I think, were better placed at the bottom of
 the phone, maybe nearer the corners.  If I am wrong here then, never mind;
but I really wish there was an easier way to end calls efficiently when not
 connected to a headset.

Does anyone else feel this way and, if so, do you think there's any

this isn't a big deal for anyone, but I still think it spoils the ship for me
and I quite often see postings from people who are having this difficulty.

RE: How to Play TV Shows Transferred to iPhone

2013-10-06 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi Alan,

No problem at all, glad to help! Just to clarify: The TV Shows tab within
the iTunes app is where you go if you want to search for and purchase shows
on the iPhone itself, rather than on the PC. They end up in the Videos app
once they're downloaded, just as your music purchases end up in the Music
app. Personally I find it even easier to make purchases on the phone than
on the PC - in fact, it's so easy that it can be dangerous! Ask my credit
card if you don't believe me J

Nicky, you're exactly right that purchased TV shows are under videos. I
would have thought that videos one recorded would be there and TV shows
would be under iTunes, TV Shows. But then I couldn't even remember that my
bluetooth devices had to be re-paired with my replacement phone. That's why
I'm on these lists. Thanks so much for your help.

I hate to be thick but I don't find it very intuitive to play a TV show I
just purchased from the iTunes Store and transferred to my iPhone 5 using
the iTunes sync. I figured to play this show I should launch the iTunes app
and then select the TV Shows tab at the bottom of the screen. But then I'm
presented with every TV show known to man and nothing that offers a
selection like shows on this device. Can anyone point me in the right
direction?

Thanks.

RE: AppStore badge shwoing 2 Updates available but all apps listed in Updates are already downloaded

2013-10-06 Thread Nicola Sanders
Same here, except that my badge shows three new items, even though all apps
seem to be up to date. Earlier today, when I really did have two apps to
update, the app store badge showed five new items. I'm using a jailbroken
4s, still on iOS 6.1.2. I've been having this little problem for the past
couple of days and I thought it might have something to do with the
jailbreak, but I don't really see why it would, as I jailbroke a few weeks
ago and my phone has been very stable. Strange indeed!

I'm having a similar issue, I'm showing that there 2 apps that need to be
updated, but only is showing up as needing to be updated. Automatic update
is off and I'm still using IOS 6.14 on an iPhone 5.

RE: Double Tap and Hold Using a Braille Display

2013-04-21 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi, Aman,

Thank you very much for the excellent information that you have provided so
far. I understand that there are bound to have been changes since you wrote
your original instructions, but they have certainly given me a clear idea of
how to go about the process. I may not have time to do any serious work on
this for a few days, but I've saved your information and I'll get to it
ASAP. I think it has great potential and I also plan to reassign some of
the BrailleNote Apex thumb keys - it appears that this should be perfectly
feasible according to your instructions.

Meanwhile, if you do have a chance to provide any updates or, for example,
further information on the Find command, it would be extremely useful.

Thanks again for all your help and hard work,

Nicky

 Hi, Scott.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by write up code, but what you can
do is modify commands for each key. That is, you can, as I said, make
a braill display button perform a function, changing its original
function to the one you want. I am using the button on the front of
the refreshabraille to do the double tap and hold, it was a back
button before, but there is already a back command, so this was
redundant. Note that there are quite a few commands which are
 redundant on many displays.

Voice Dream Reader and Braille display: basic instructions

2013-04-07 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

I have been in touch with Winston, the developer of the excellent Voice
Dream Reader app, as I was having difficulty reading through the contents of
a file in Braille. I then got my act together and worked out how to do it,
and Winston suggested that I write up the steps that I use, for the benefit
of other users who have also been having problems. I have now checked the
list archives and I realize that people are able to read Voice Dream files
in Braille with no problems, so there's nothing revolutionary about my
instructions. But I've decided to post them anyway, in case anyone finds
them helpful or has corrections. Here are the steps:

I am using a BrailleNote Apex BT32 and an iPhone 4S, but I hope these basic
instructions will be general enough to work with any Braille display and iOS
device.

1. With a file open in Voice Dream, locate the first element on the screen
by pressing Space with dots 1-2-3 on the Braille keyboard.

2. Move through the various elements using Space with dot 4 or an
equivalent command that may be available if your Braille display has
navigation keys, until you reach the words 'Next item'.

3. You can now start reading the contents of the file by panning the
Braille display to the right in the usual way, i.e. pressing Space with dot
5 or using an equivalent command, if available on your display. Continue to
pan the display to the right until you reach the end of the block of text
that is currently visible. You will know that you have reached the end when
the focus lands on the 'Bookmarks' button.

4. Now pan the Braille display once to the left, using Space with dot 2 or
an equivalent navigation command. This will move the focus back into the
text area, at the beginning of the page you have just read, and the Braille
display will be blank. This step is important, otherwise the Scroll command
in the next step will not work.

5. To scroll to the next page of text, press Space with dots 1-4-5-6. This
is the 'Scroll down one page' command and it is the equivalent of a
'Three-finger swipe up' using VoiceOver on the touchscreen. To scroll up to
the previous page, press Space with dots 3-4-5-6, which is the equivalent of
a 'three-finger swipe down'.

6. Once the Scroll command has been executed, the Braille display briefly
shows the percentage of progress through the file, and then it goes blank.
The focus is placed at the beginning of the next page of text and you can
read it by panning repeatedly to the right in the usual way, until you reach
the 'Bookmarks' button again. Repeat these steps to continue reading
through the file.

NOTE: You will notice that the text overlaps slightly from one page to the
next, so the last few words of the previous page are repeated at the
beginning of the next page.

Happy reading,

Nicky

RE: Suggestions for StandScan Pro maintenance and usage.

2013-03-31 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hello Sandy,

This is an excellent set of scanning tips. I agree 100% with your
suggestion of an Append to clipboard feature, as I often need to scan
multi-page documents and then be able to navigate through the text. Having
to copy and paste the individual pages into a file is a real pain! It may
be due to a lack of familiarity with the apps, but I find that TextGrabber
is slightly more efficient with multi-page documents, as I can get all the
pages scanned in first, without too many steps, and I can then easily access
the individual pages from within the History.

Thanks again for all your helpful StandScan posts,

Nicky

Subject: Suggestions for StandScan Pro maintenance and usage.

Hallo,

I thought to make a few observations re maintenance and usage of the SSP
to those of us who have invested in it. i have had mine for a few weeks now
and have noticed the following:

1. Although we get, by far, our best results when using 12 volts, either
with the battery back-up or the mains power, the lights do get warm, even,
hot, if you leave them on when not in use. So, I always unplug mine after
use. This should, not only, add to the life span on the lights, but might be
a sensible safety precaution.

2. Because I am left-handed, I sit my phone on the back left-hand corner,
whereas, I guess, most of you sit yours on the nearer right-hand corner?
Now, this means that my phone is sitting above the lights and, as mentioned
before, this part of the box could get hot if the lights are left on
unnecessarily, plus, I might affect my phone adversely if I leave it sitting
there for too long. So, I think the right-handed ones of us may have an
advantage there, but, this notwithstanding, I would like to suggest that
when you progress from single sheet scanning that, for best results, you
don't scan double pages as this is only reliable toward the centre of the
book, but rather, take one page at a time, holding the side of the book, not
being scanned, vertical, at the front of the box. You can risk putting a
fingertip on the margin of the flat page to ensure that it stays flat, but,
beware, don't cover the text, so only just on the edge. Then, when you want
to scan the other page, how about turning the book round, doing the same?
Now here is my point: both Prizmo and Text Grabber will cope with
upside-down text, but both do better when it is up the right way, so, if you
feel suitably proficient, how about swapping the phone around to the
left-hand position, like me, and take the second shot? Possibly, i have
confused everyone now! Sorry if this is the case, and, really, i am talking
of more advanced use of the SSP and your OCR of choice, so, perhaps, this
suggestion is for those with time on their hands and no love life!!!

3. Protable it is! But durable it isn't! I would suggest that people keep
their SSP in a jiffy envelope when transporting it in a bag/case, not only
because it won't help the scanning if it gets too bent, but also to protect
the connection of the little cable to the lights. Mine has become a little
worn and I have, sometimes, to jiggle the connection to ensure that the
lights come on! So, avoid this if you can.

4. Now, this is a suggestion which, I think, would be very useful in other
apps and applications: Also, useful to our sighted counterparts, to wit: an
extre option in IOS to append to clipboard. At a single stroke, we could
scan multipage documents and then paste them in our favourite text editor,
in my case, the built-in notes app. So, do people agree that it would be
worth lobbying for this? As I say, it would be most useful to all
iPhone/iPad/Touch users, we would only need for it to be VO friendly.

5. Last of all, if you like to leave your standscan Pro set up, don't
leave it sitting on your speakers or other source of electrical field, or
you may find your magnets won't work so well for you!

Finally, (I mean it this time) when the website calims that it is the
work of a few seconds to assemble the box, they are right! They are right in
saying once you have the way of it. Obviously, for us, reaching that point
will take a little longer, but two things happen with practice: 1. You learn
to start with the thing the right way round, either by positioning the flat
pack with the cable sticking out of the top right far corner, or, you stick
a tactile, even a sticky braille lable to assist. It wouldn't hurt the box
to stick a braille or barcode for those who don't read braille, on each of
the flaps to keep you on course.
2. The more often you use the box, the more it naturally folds itself,
especially those little strenthening triangles, so practise won't only help
you, it will also help the box with its muscle memory!

Happy scanning, Sandy.

apps set to different languages. I find that TextGrabber is a bit more
flexible in this area, as it supports many more languages than Prizmo and
you can have up to three languages active at once. I presume that having
more than one language set is bound to detract slightly from the OCR
accuracy, but I do find it very useful, as I often need to scan documehnts
which are basically written in Czech, but which contain an occasional quote
in English or French.

Cheers,

Nicky

Hello Nicky,

As far as I can tell, you have to have taken a picture and decided to use it
before you can get to the screen where you change the language. Before that,
OCR is dimmed.

The OCR button is at the bottom right of the screen, and when you double-tap
it, you'll get the screen where you change the language.

I use both Prizmo and TextGrabber. So I've set one to English and the other
to French to avoid having to mess with the language.

Cheers,

Anne

RE: about standscan

2013-03-29 Thread Nicola Sanders
Hi,

I recently received my StandScan pro and I agree with Andy, it's certainly
very light and portable. I have been in desperate need of something like
this for ages, as at work I am often presented with documents that I need to
access at very short notice. I have been practising unfolding it and
folding it back up, and I'm certainly a lot quicker than I was at first,
though I can't yet claim that the process is slick, neat and unobtrusive!

What worries me slightly is the fact that the StandScan Pro is quite thin
and flimsy, and although I plan to take great care of it, I don't know how
well it will withstand the rigours of life in my work bag - I suppose only
time will tell!

Could I just take this opportunity to thank the list members for their
helpful and informative posts about the StandScan. I sifted through the
archives before joining the list and the knowledge that I acquired made it
much easier for me to get up and running with the StandScan when it arrived.
I used it at work for the first time on Wednesday and I was delighted with
the results. I agree that Prizmo and TextGrabber have their own strengths.

Best,

Nicky

It weighs almost nothing, and folds down to easily fit into a briefcase or
messenger bag. For me, the issue is what is involved in setting it up, and
at least now, I don't think I could do it in a hurry.

Subject: about standscan

Hi all.

Well, this question if for the people who received the standscan.

This thing is portable? I mean, it is something that we can take to our
school, or to our work, or to a presentation, and use it. Or it i something
that will need to be install at home, on a table, and will looks like a
weird device?

Thanks

P
