doesn’t work in her home at all which surprises me as I thought it was supposed
to work in the dark. I’d like clarification on that as I’ll be getting a phone

Usually turning off the phone, opening the SIM tray and closing it again then
turn on the phone will fix this.
You don't have to completely remove the card, just push the release button with
the removal tool or a paper clip, pull the tray out half way and push it back
