Have you tried a reset to see if it charges after the iPad has restarted ?
Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds
(ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't
lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot
I just tried the USB cable from the iPhone4, and now the iPad is charging while
plugged into the computer. If I remember correctly, this will do the job even
though it is a smaller cable. How important is it to have the correct connector?

Apart from what is the latest, I would advise an iPad mini. The convenience
of size to slip into a handbag is a huge plus and it is fully functional

I can now report that the problem was the iPad charger failing it has now
totally failed and gives no ³beep¹ or other indication of charging when
connected to either the iPad or the iPhone.
The iPhone charger, on the other hand, using the same wall sockets and

Yep, the sudden loss of power can cause hardware damage, you are very lucky it
didn't damage components in the iPad!
could have been a lot worse than just replacing the Power Adapter.

Yes, unfortunately sudden loss of power is an all too frequent (two outages
on Friday, including one of around 3 hours) event down here ;o)
I have the iMac and external drives running from a UPS which prevents them
being badly shut down at inopportune times and seems to work well.
The iPad
We had a power outage down here in Albania this morning. My iPad was
connected to it's charger - which was plugged in. I was not in the same room
when the power went out (I was asleep!) or when the power came back on - so
I did not notice anything happening on way or the other.

Just very quick reply...
The very first thing that I would do is to reboot the iPad by holding down the
sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple Logo appears on the
screen.
See if that helps.

Yep, one of the first things I tried ;o)
Everything else about the ipad seems to be just fine (as far as I've
noticed)
