Don’t bother trying to locate it John. Launch it with Spotlight as recommended,
then once it has launched, right- (control-) click its icon in the dock. Choose
Options from the popup menu followed by “Keep in dock”. Much easier.

Re: Dvd Player

2019-07-03 Thread Ronni Brown
Hello John,

The simplest way to open DVD Player in MacOS Mojave 10.4 is through Spotlight:

Hit Command + Spacebar to bring up Spotlight (or click the little Spotlight
icon in the upper right corner of the screen) and search for “DVD Player”, then
hit Return / Enter to launch it.
DVD Player will launch and you’re ready to use it to watch and play DVD video
from a disc as usual.

Kind Regards,

Yes, I went with cheaper external DVD drives then the Apple one,…so that’s only

So duly noted, that Apple DVD Player now works with newer external third party

2017-10-30 Thread Daniel Kerr
nerrr nerrr Ronni, bet you by a minute for a change,….hehe :)

Oh and the Apple DVD Player will actually work with other external DVD
players,…not just Apple’s one :) (I know as I’ve used it with an external LG
and Samsung third party DVD drives, and Apple DVD player works fine with
it,….just for your records,…hehe) :))

Kind regards

2017-10-30 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Severin,

Apple's DVD Player application only works with an internal optical drive or
‘Apple's external SuperDrive’.
You can physically remove the DVD Player but it will only install again in an
update.

Re: DVD player

2017-10-30 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Severin

You can turn off DVD Auto launch as follows -
Open DVD Player. Go to the DVD Player menu then Preferences.
Under the Player tab, where it says “When a disc is inserted” un-tick “start
playing disc”.
It used to be a setting you could change in System Preferences, but it’s
generally removed on my systems with no DVD player.

But that should stop it for you.

Try that and see how you go.

Kind regards
Daniel

physically remove the DVD player and its preferences but of course it is locked

Re: DVD Player

2015-12-16 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Severin,

The Code appears to be identical to Yosemite, but I did suspected this would
possibly occur.
As I mentioned previously the 'System Integrity protection… the added security
in El Capitan.
Protecting people from making errors when making any changes to system files,
which could damage the OS.

So you would either require to the Apple USB SuperDrive
<http://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive> (like I
have for my MBA) which DVD Player recognises and it works very well. Not that
I’ve used it much at all as I tend to use my MBP for any DVD work.
Cheers,

Ronni

Re: DVD Player

2015-12-15 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi again Severin,

I’ve managed to locate a ‘lost’ folder in my backups with the instructions how
to change the DVD player option from looking at an Internal optical drive to a
External optical drive - Apple Inc had encoded a check into OS X to verify
whether the attached USB optical drive is in fact an Apple USB SuperDrive. If
not, ‘tell the user that DVD Player will not play nice’ which translated in OS
X speak is - “A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]”.

"How to Get An External Optical Drive Working With DVD Player Application”.
As I already had an Apple USB SuperDrive before purchasing my MacBook Air, I
did not need to use the instructions how to modify the DVDPlayback framework.
If you do want to give it a try to modify the DVDPlayback framework so DVD
Player 'will/might' recognise your external DVD player.
I can email you the documentation off-list.
Just make sure before you do any modification, you backup(copy) your existing
DVDPlayback framework file according to the instructions in the documentation.

In the Update 25 July 2015 - you can download an already modified version of
the DVDPlayback framework file.
which already has Replaced all the words “internal” with “external” within the
Hexadecimal language DVDPlayback framework file.

If you find it doesn’t work for your external DVD player, just replace the
modified file by placing the unmodified file you ‘previously Saved’ onto the
same location and let it overwrite the modified file.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: DVD Player

2015-12-14 Thread Ronda Brown
Yes Severin,
There used to be a work around by replace the dvdplayback.framework file,
(“/System/Library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/DVDPlayback”) --
but that doesn't work anymore as the files are not there anymore, because of
System Integrity protection...

The best solution seems to be - use VLC as I mentioned previously.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: DVD Player

2015-12-14 Thread Severin Crisp
A penny has just dropped - maybe?
In Yosemite days I converted my iMac to a Fusion Drive (a brilliant move!) but
this required removal of the DVD drive for installation of the SSD. Afterwards
there was still no problem playing DVDs with DVD player on plugged in external
drives.
This is no longer the case and DVD drive opens with the message
A valid DVD drive could not be found (-70012)
I suspect this is the problem.

Re: DVD Player

2015-12-14 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Severin,

I’m not having any trouble playing DVD discs in OS X El Capitan 10.11.2 DVD
Player.

Have you tired playing the DVD with VLC.app (Media Player)?

1. Insert the DVD - then select (click once highlight) the DVD icon when it
appears on the Desktop

2. Open VLC.app (if you don’t already have it open)

3. In the VLC Menu - Go to “File > Open Disc”
Select “Disc” button - then click Open (which will be blue)

If still no success, we need more details. Are you receiving any error message?
What format is the disc - UDF (Universal Disk Format)?
What video format is the media file on the disc?

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Marlene,

No way legally to do this. Apple Support page states you can only change the
DVD region five times and then you are stuck with your last choice. And that's
it.
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DVDPlayer/5.2/en/26880.html>
"Important:You can set the region code for your DVD drive only five times
(including the original setting). The fifth time you change the code, it will
be permanently set."

There are ways of "Flashing the Firmware"to RPC-1, (region free), but I would
NEVER give instructions or recommend anyone doing this.

If she only uses Region 0 DVDs (which have no region code), she is fine.

An alternate "sometimes", can be a video player like VLC that doesn't check the
region code. BUT, Beware that your drive's firmware still triggers the OS
counter, which may then trigger a firmware setting change on your drive.
Its hit and miss on whether or not this will happen, with some Macs allowing
any region movie to be viewed in VLC without triggering a change, and others
triggering a change and potentially locking you out of future switches when you
hit the limit.

Cheers,
Ronni

Mactracker shows only 1 Superdrive on Original Mac , the second would
therefor be an add on .

You will need to open the case and establish the Make and model of the
not working unit,

then go to the maker support download site to search for a driver.

I am assuming you did not instal it and therefor do not have the
original CD that came with the unit .

If you have trouble finding the right " driver " to download ,
mail back with the info and we can look for you .

Hi Frank,

What Region Code is the DVD?
If it's a Region Code your Computer will not read,
try playing the DVD with VLC (Video Lan Client)

It doesn't care about regions.

You can try this, and if it works - fine. Be prepared, though, to have

need to get back to 10.3.9.

I'm currently out in the field - we're trying to backup 5 short
customer promo DVDs to HD so when I get back home I can burn them.

The problem is I'm using a G3 333 Lombard (no DVD decoder) with a
DVD-ROM drive (from the 400MHz model).

DVDBackup (which I've used in the past on other machines) requires
Apple DVD Player to "authenticate" DVDs before they can be backed
up. Obviously the player can't be installed on this model machine.

Anyone got a clever solution or alternative product so I can get
these disks back to base? I can do it the old fashioned way (just
take them back, do the duplication on another machine and mail them
back) but this is going to take more time then I have.

You could try Fast DVD Backup. The first burn is free :)

Not sure why, but I'm sure you've actually tried it yes?

I suspect that with some un*x tools you could do what you need to, or

Re: DVDs to play in DVD player (domestic)

2004-10-28 Thread Eugene

Hi Ken

a quick check on the internet reveals that this appears to be a common
problem with that DVD player. Another site suggests that the Toshiba is
not DVD-RW compatible.

Here is a thread of info from one forum read from the bottom
up

  regards
  Eugene

yeah, I managed to get some of my questions answered from a thread I
started a while ago. I installed the latest ASPI from adaptec (v 4.70
or something)
and the thread you replied to (from me) about Imation DVD-R - well
these discs seem to play very nicely in my SD-2650.
I also e-mailed someone from Toshiba about the drive. The general
consensus I got from them, was that the SD-2650 will play DVD-R, it
just depends on how the disc is burned and the media you use.
The Imation labelled CMC discs i've been using are turning out quite
nicely, and with RecordNow Deluxe - I think I finally have a winning
combination.

Thanks for the input (again!) mate =)

Hey all, I recently got a Pioneer 105 for backing up my DVD collection

alone Toshiba SD-2650 struggles to play my DVD-R/RW discs. It chugs
along and sometimes won't even load the disc.
Is it possible to burn a firmware disc to put into the drive, or do
something with it that will let me play DVD-R/RW properly?

I find I'm still using these formats even though I can now create dvd's.

DVD player won't play Mac files

2004-07-01 Thread Lloyd White
I am using an iMac, OS 10.3.4

I have just acquired a DENON DVD Surround receiver to play CDs,DVDs and
especially JPEG photos copied from my iMac to CD to show on my TV.

Music CDs burned on my Mac work fine. The Kodak photo CDs also work but the
JPEG files will not. This despite the salesman, a Mac user, claiming it
would handle JPEG photos.

Buried deep on page 80, the Operating manual specifically states that "JPEG
files written on a Mac computer cannot be played." The manual also states
that JPEG files should have the extension .JPG which is what my photos are.

Is there a work around for this? Is it possible to burn all my iPhoto
library, all .JPG, to a CD and get them burned again to a PC format? And if
so, who would do this?
Or does Toast burn in different formats that would be acceptable to this
player

As there is about 1.8 Gb of them can this be done on a DVD?

Finally, is this a problem with all DVD players?

Thanks

Lloyd

I agree with Mark. You can pick up a 330W power inverted from Super
Cheap Autos for $69.00 (when on special). This would keep the kids
amused all the way to Adelaide and back! Being totally portable it
means I can take it out of the car when I park in dodgy places. Only
disadvantage is my TiBook doesn't have enough volume!

2003-09-03 Thread Martin Hill
Ha! As Rod has picked up (thanks Rod) I've just re-read your post
Robert, and I now realise you actually seem to want to view DVDs
played on your DVD player on your PowerBook's screen - is that
correct?!

If so, then as you've probably now guessed, the S-Video plug on the
back of your Powerbook is for going in the other direction. If you
want to capture video INTO your powerbook, you'd need a video capture
device such as:

- the Capsure PC-card video-in device
- a USB video-in device like the XLR8 Interview
Both of which will only capture at a maximum resolution of around 384 x 288

As the Lombard doesn't have a Firewire port, you can't use that
option unless you get a Firewire PC card (and analog-firewire
converter like the Canopus ADVC).

I've used all of the options above to capture video in the past with
my old Lombard but they all cost.

OK lets assume that this is "I have a DVD player in my PowerBook and

Sout = S out = S-Video out = this is a video out output that uses
"S-Video (mini DIN) plug"

Video: S-out you use the supplied (or if lost purchased from dick

plug'em in, turn on TV or external device, turn on computer. by

just like a standard monitor (from recollection)...
Note that you can't run it through a VCR recorder first - IT must go

Re: DVD player to view on G3 powerbook?

2003-09-03 Thread Martin Hill

It's been a while since I last used my old Lombard for outputting to a TV.

To get any Mac to display on a TV (if it is a model with the option
(which the Lombard is)), you need to plug the Mac into the video-out
destination first and then either wake up or turn on the Mac. If it
is connected properly, the Mac will sense an external monitor and
then display on the device. As the Lombard supports extended desktop
mode, you should also get the TV appearing as an extra screen in the
Monitors control Panel (under the Arrange section). You will also
then get extra resolutions available to you for that screen such as
PAL 640x480 or NTSC 800 x 600 etc.

Make sure you choose something like PAL 640 x 480 first - you may
also get the option to do overscan or underscan try either of those.

Are you plugged straight into the composite video-in plug on the TV
(little yellow RCA plug) or into a VCR which then goes into the TV?
You need to make sure the VCR and/or TV are set to receive video on
whatever channel it is plugged into (AV1 or AV2 or similar)

Eugene

Subject: Apple DVD Player - Region Codes & DVD compatability with
different versions

A follow up to my previous mystery on different DVD set-ups:

DVD 3 The Wall (Pink Floyd)
DVD 4 The search for Robert Johnson

These two DVDs both play fine on the iMac in either OS9 or OSX (ie set-ups 2
& 3 below).

But in the powerbook both give the following message:
"To play this DVD video disc you need to select a region code for your DVD
drive. Do you want to set the region code for your drive now? Once set, you
can change the region code only 4 more times. You should notchange it unless
you want to change it permanently."
At this point, I cancelled, not wanting to change the region code.

Now I'm confused, the only disc that shows a region code on the case is DVD
1 - which plays fine in all set-ups. It says the region code is 4 (which is
presumably our region in Australia?) So if the drives are set for a
particular region it must be 4.

So why do DVDs 3&4 play in the iMac but ask for a region change in the
powerbook - is this down to the actual drive ie the powerbook is region
sensitive & the iMac is multiregion?

I suppose this problem is different from the previous - the fact that DVD 2
will play in the iMac under OSX but not OS9 would surely have to be down to
software? But would that be Apple DVD player or the drivers for the
superdrive? Anybody else had this problem?

TIA

Re: Apple DVD Player - DVD compatability with different versions

2003-01-03 Thread Daniel

>> DVD 1 Buena Vista Social club

DVD 2 Little Shop of Horrors (A classic, trust me!)

DVD 1 plays fine on all 3 set-ups.
DVD 2 plays fine on set-up 3, but never seems to load up on set-ups 1 or 2.
Inserting the disc starts Apple DVD Player which shows "loading" and stays
there.

>> Any ideas as to what the problem is. Since set-ups 2 & 3 are the same

A bit of a long shot, but have a look in the System Folder, under
Preferences. Some DVD's create a "preference" file when you load it
the first time, and this could be causing the problem. I have seen a
DVD create two files with the same "short" name as the DVD, then it
wouldn't play the second time. After trashing these 2 files and
restarting the DVD seemed to work fine.

As I said it's a bit of a long shot, but hopefully it's there and
solves your problem.

Fingers crossed!

Kind Regards

Hmmm - DVD 1, which plays fine on all 3 set-ups, is a dual layer disc
whereas DVD 2, AFAIK, is single layer (70 minute B&W movie, no extras)

Sorry, obviously didn't explain fully, set-ups 2 & 3 are the same physical
machine, just booting into OSX (when Apple DVD Player v 3.0.1 plays the DVD)
or booting into OS9 (when Apple DVD Player v Z-2.7 just shows "loading" -
hence my assumption that the problem is software.

No, I wasn't wanting to display it in 16:9, I was wondering whether the
older OS9 versions of Apple DVD Player (2.5 & 2.7) needed to be told
manually what the aspect ratio was and were set at 16:9 (since DVD 1 is
playing OK) and needed to be changed to 4:3 before they would recognise DVD
2. (This didn't seem likely, but since DVD 2 plays OK on OSX/Apple DVD
Player v 3.0.1 the only difference with the same machine in OS9 would seem
to be the version of Apple DVD Player (I assumed it wasn't down to the
superdrive drivers since the problem also occurred on the combo-drive
equiped powerbook)

Not necessarily. Various DVD drives may read 'marginal' DVD's with
varying degrees of ability (especially dual layer DVD's). I've got
DVD's that play fine on a DVD player or an iMac but not at all on a
PowerBook. You might also want to use Apple System Profiler and see
if both machines 2 and 3 have the same DVD drive in them, and the
same revision of the firmware.

I notice that DVD 1 (plays on all) is 16:9 Aspect ratio whereas DVD 2 (plays

AFAIK, If the aspect ratio of the original is 4:3 there's not much
point in displaying it in 16:9 unless you want to distort the image.

10.2 DVD Player and burnt DVDs

2002-09-06 Thread Rod

Hi All!

Just wondering if anyone has had problems playing burnt DVD disks in 10.2.
I have tried disks burnt with iDVD as well as disks with a Panasonic
standalone burner. The disks have been the Apple branded variety.

I have searched the usual avenues (WAMUG archives, Kbase, Macintouch...) but
there is no mention of this problem.

Any thoughts before I escalate?

Re: Drastic performance in CD/DVD player

2002-01-10 Thread Shay Telfer

The CD/DVD ROM drive in my G4/400 is becoming increasingly frustrating
to use. It still reads commercial CDs and DVDs just fine, but reading
CD-Rs I (or even someone else) have burnt is entirely a haphazard
experience.

Any particular brand of CD-R media?

The problem seems to be software-related, since I have no trouble with
commercial CDs. Has anyone else had a similar experience, or shed any
light on the problem?

If it only happenn on CD-R's that wouldn't imply that it's software related...

Drastic performance in CD/DVD player

2002-01-09 Thread hinchlif
I wonder if anyone on the list can shed any light on this for me.

The CD/DVD ROM drive in my G4/400 is becoming increasingly frustrating
to use. It still reads commercial CDs and DVDs just fine, but reading
CD-Rs I (or even someone else) have burnt is entirely a haphazard
experience.

If I'm lucky, the CD-R will actually mount, although it can take
anything up to a minute or more to read the contents, depending on the
CD. Other CD-Rs just never mount, although these ones may do if I insert
them into the CD burner (an Iomega Zip). They are guaranteed to mount in
the Iomega drive if I have Toast running, however, but still not in the
built-in drive.

The problem is particularly bad in MacOS X, although the bad CDs are
almost as problematic if I boot into 9.1.

The problem CD's load and mount just fine in my old 7500. In fact this
is the only way I can gain access to the bad ones: mount them as a share
on the 7500 and then read them across the network on MacOS X. This
works beautifully!

The problem seems to be software-related, since I have no trouble with
commercial CDs. Has anyone else had a similar experience, or shed any
light on the problem?

I get exactly the same thing on my G4 Powerbook 550. Black square on TV

that is any better. I have tried holding down the escape key to allocate the
new monitor, nothing. It would be good to know if anyone else has this

Well Daz, I tried all these things to no avail. I am using the S-Video out
on the G4 Powerbook to a SCART connector on the back of the TV. I tried
Video Mirroring and using the USB mouse, but the TV does not see the G4 at
all. I presume it will see the G4 desktop no matter if there is a DVD in
their or not, is this correct? Or will it ONLY see a DVD.
I use a Powerbook G4 550 with OS 9.2

Anything else I need to be doing?

Hi Brian,

Under Mac OS X 10.1 you cannot view DVD's on an external TV. I looked it up
last night and it's just not supported yet. Under Mac OS 9, simply do the
following:

Connect up your TV to the PowerBook. Turn video mirroring ON. Change the
video resolution to something like 800x600 or 640x480 and make sure you see
it on the TV. Then, plug in a USB mouse, and close the lid of your
PowerBook. Wait a sec, and then click the mouse button (don't open up the
PowerBook). The TV should come on, and you can play your DVD's.

Cheers,
daz.

Subject: Using a laptop as a dvd player

Howdy
I have G4 laptop 667 DVD and I get a dark patch when I try to watch a
dvd on a television monitor . I get the message NOT PERMISSIBLE when
trying to watch a DVD on the television in the dark patch on the
television screen.
Fiddled with monitoring and resolutions. All of the computer screen
displays fine, computer graphics in Itunes is fine but not DVD image.

Is it possible? Suggestions?

Brian

DVD player update WARNING

2001-12-02 Thread Steven Tan

Hi,

I just downloaded the DVD player update via the Software update through
OS X. Now whenever I start DVD player, there is an error saying my
machine is not supported.
?? I am using a Pismo 500, so there should be no reason why it is not
supported. Anyone had this problem.

Apple DVD Player 2.2 for OS8.6 Download??

2001-11-21 Thread Touchwood
Hi

I wonder if anyone can direct me ta URL for a download
of Apple DVD Player 2.2 to use with OS 8.6.

I've drawn a blank with Version Tracker and at the Apple site.

Failing that, would someone be prepared to email me a
copy of their Apple DVD Player software that they are using
with 8.6.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the latest compatible version
with OS 8.6 was 2.2.

Thanks
