In my opinion this very ambitious budget (maybe too ambitious if such extreme

I belief fundraising is doing as they're told, the best they can.
The Wikimedia Foundation gets a lot of flak in these discussions.
But isn't WMF operating within limits set by the Board of Trustees?
Lila can propose a budget, but the Board is ultimately responsible, needs to
approve that budget, and can amend it.

I endorse what Leila and Pete said above. My responses to the black banner
differ in details from Leila's, but the overall impression is the same: it is
fear-inducing, as though someone or something has been murdered, or is about to
be. Looking at the black banner, my eyes are first drawn to the highlighted
sentence, and then the one following it, about "keeping Wikipedia online and
ad-free."

Of course the banner "works". But it works for the wrong reasons. (The same
could be said for the #keepitfree hashtag on Twitter.) It's the result of
purely Darwinian A/B testing run amok, untempered by reason and conscience.
As Pete Forsyth has said: that process is broken. It seems not unlike the
process by which the yellow press come up with its headlines, designed to
pander to the basest, most primal instincts.

I will reiterate here that, according to the recent fundraising report[1], the
Foundation took $75.5 million in 2014/2015, exactly five times what it had
taken five years prior, in 2009-2010 ($15.1 million). Most organisations would
see such revenue growth not as evidence of a looming financial crisis calling
for desperate appeals for more cash, but as an amazing, stunning success.

Credibility, once lost, is hard to regain. So far, you have lost it only for a
number of individuals, like that software executive Pete mentioned in his post.
But that number is increasing, and as your bank balance grows and your appeals
become more desperate-sounding, there will come a tipping point.

If you are going to ask people this December to donate money "to keep Wikipedia
online and ad-free" (something that in the narrow sense costs the WMF no more
than $3 million p.a.), when in reality you are shooting for $70 million to $100
million, including several million

Would you like that to be your legacy?

[Wikimedia-l] Recognition of Wikimedia Digitization User Group

2015-10-15 Thread Carlos M. Colina

Dear all,

I am honoured to announce on behalf of the Affiliations Committee, the
recognition of Wikimedia Digitization User Group as a Wikimedia User
Group [1]. Among their goals are brining together people and projects
who digitize all kinds of public domain works (records, photographs,
artwork, books) focusing on the practical process, as well as different
alternatives for equipment (price and performance-wise), creating
tutorials for different digitization projects, generating a knowledge
base to outline the process of rightsclearing (which is fundamental for
safely uploading works to Wikimedia projects) plus organizing workshops
about the different digitization projects and methods.

Let's welcome this new Wikimedia User Group 8-)

Welcome!!!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Introducing the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list

2015-10-15 Thread Gregory Varnum
Hey Pine,

As you know, AffCom started looking into this list after some discussions with
affiliates in Berlin, Wikimania, and at that page you referred to. We did talk
with that list’s moderators about potentially reusing that list (largely why
the creation of this list took awhile). However, ultimately, we decided to
proceed with the creation of this list.

The old list is not on Wikimedia servers or officially connected to AffCom, so
I cannot speak to its future. However, it has becoming increasingly inactive,
is limited to chapters (so excludes a majority of our affiliates), and not
something we have promoted recently. My personal hope is that this new broader
list replaces that one over time, but that is not something we can “force” as
it’s not a resource we officially help manage.

I agree that the WMF needs to slow its growth and look at stabilizing
around its currently level of funding. Continuing to grow at 20% is simply
not sustainable while maintaining our values and our reputation. I am not
yet sure what the rest of the board's position is on this matter but I
share many of the concerns raised here.

2015-10-15 Thread Neil P. Quinn
Carlos,

Is there a reason why the list is private? The topics you mentioned—general
affiliate discussion, regional conferences, blog post announcements, and so
on—don't seem particularly sensitive. (I'm just curious. My WMF role has
nothing to do with affiliates and I wouldn't subscribe to the list even if
it were public.)

Thanks!

Some nice pics, you are improving (some countries need better, to not say,
have judges)

Its sad to see that most of the winners will not a Featured Pictures at
Commons. I would like to see bigger photos, print most of this images will
not be good...

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wiki Loves Earth 2015 winners announced!

2015-10-15 Thread Gnangarra
IMHO the winner is not the best example of contributing to Commons as the
high resolution image wasnt uploaded until after it had been announced as
the winner
and when you read the rules it says "*Please submit images that are as
large as possible and do not “downsize for the web”. We value high
resolution images for many purposes including print.**...*."
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2015/Rules_%26_FAQ
and yet that is exactly what the winner has done

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Introducing the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list

2015-10-15 Thread Pine W
Got it. Thanks Varnent.

Regarding the privacy question: I'm sort of thinking that if we really want
to keep the new list private for legal or other reasons, it should be run
outside of WMF servers like the chapters list is. On the other hand, if the
purpose of the new list is to facilitate discussion among affiliates in a
smaller and less public group while still being open to WMF employees to a
limited degree, then the hosting proposed here makes sense. Personally, I
get the sense that the affiliate and WMF relationships have generally
(there are exceptions) warmed a bit over the past couple of years as
affiliate governance and leadership have evolved and as WMF's evaluation
capacity has improved, so I'm fine with the new design. Thanks for working
on this.

Hi Carlos,

Can you clarify how this list relates to the existing chapters mailing
list? (Also, please see the discussion at

).

Thanks,

[Wikimedia-l] Introducing the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list

2015-10-15 Thread Carlos M. Colina

Dear all,

On behalf of the Affiliations Committe, I am pleased to introduce the
launch of the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list, which is basically a
place for all the affiliates (chapters, thematic organizations, user
groups) to discuss issues related to affiliates, make announcements to
other affiliates, and collaborate on activities and community-wide
events. The idea is to help facilitate the dialogue affiliates across
our movement, plus collaborative discussions like community-wide
activities, joint edit-a-thons, regional conferences, blog/report posts,
or other communications from affiliates.

Each Wikimedia movement affiliate is allocated three spots on the
mailing list. All affiliates may contact the Affiliations Committee to
request additional spots if needed.

Please find a bit more information on Meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_movement_affiliates/Affiliates_mailing_list
and do not hesitate contacting us if you have further questions.

Regards,
Carlos

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Introducing the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list

2015-10-15 Thread Gregory Varnum
Hey Neil,

I’ll let Carlos add his thoughts, but basically, this was a consistent request
from affiliates. So the short answer is that the target audience requested it,
and we want them to use it. :) The page that Pine mentioned
(https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Affiliates_Network#Mailing_list_request_for_comment

)
is one example of where this request came up.

Slightly longer answer, and I am interpreting and summarizing what I heard from
affiliates, is that they would like a space to privately discuss issues -
sometimes sensitive in nature - with each other. As Carlos mentioned, the first
mentioned goal is a space for affiliates to discuss issues specific to their
work. I think the concern is that if it was up for public review (not that
affiliates fear public debates), they might be less willing or even able to
discuss some issues that might, for example, involve financial matters, privacy
issues, or embargoed communications.

Hope that helps answer your question.

[Wikimedia-l] Recognition of Iraqi Wikimedians

2015-10-15 Thread Carlos M. Colina

Dear all,

I am honoured to announce on behalf of the Affiliations Committee, the
recognition of Iraqi Wikimedians as a Wikimedia User Group [1]. Among
their goals are supporting the different Wikimedia projects in Iraq,
supporting Iraqi Wikimedians, and eventually becoming the recognized
chapter in Iraq. Recently, they have organized a series of workshops in
Erbil to teach people about Wikipedia and how to edit it, and are
currently working on flyers regarding Wikipedia and how important it is,
in both Arabic and Kurdish.

Please, let's welcome our iraqi colleagues :-)

Mabrouk!!!
