[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Kiwix-testing] [KIWIX] New version of Kiwix for Sugar

2012-03-05 Thread Jessie Wild
Forwarding this information about ZIM reader Kiwix, which is the reader
commonly used for the Offline Wikipedia projects.

Many of you on these lists I know have connections to both OLPC and/or
Offline Wikipedia, so I thought that you might at a minimum interested in
the update and hopefully also interested in helping test!

Best wishes to all -

Dear testers,

we finally have fixed the big bug impacting loading of ZIM files with
0.8x versions of the OLPC OS. So, Kiwix should work now and be able to
load any ZIM file. No bug anymore concerning Kiwix on Sugar is still
open on our side.

Please test the last version and give us a feedback:
http://activities.sugarlabs.org/fr/sugar/addon/4483

Build your own small custom ZIM file there:
* https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sp%C3%A9cial:Livre
* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Book

If everything still runs fine, we plan to introduce pre-packaged .xo
files (Kiwix+content) during the summer.

Emmanuel

 Hi Folks,

I was thinking of experimenting conducting online outreach. I want to
try out if we can do an effective outreach event using a google+ (video)
hangout. Virtual outreach has a number of advantages:

 * No investment of time/effort/cost in travel
 * Personal attention to each participant (because of individual
 video/screenshare facilities.)
 * No complications of no laptops available at the venue or a limit on
creating user names from a single IP address during the event
 * Lower dependency on institutions/college fests to organize an event for
 us.
 * Not limited by physical presence. Sitting in Kanyakumari, one can
conduct outreach for interested folks in Kashmir!

This is just a trial to test if online outreach is effective, doable and
manageable. This could be one of the ways forward! (Potentially, we could
have more community members doing more events with a more diverse audience.)

 I'm really excited. Fingers crossed!

 Thanks

2011-12-09 Thread Jessie Wild
Thanks for sending this, Shiju!

I just got off the phone with a wonderful woman who works for EDC India who
was asking me how she could participate in Kannada Wikipedia editing.
Obviously I can just direct her to the homepage of kn-wiki, but is there
somewhere she could go to get some coaching to begin? She's never edited
before, but is fluent in English too and wants to increase the educational
content.

Thanks for your help!

Kannada with more than 4 crore speakers and is one of the 22 scheduled
languages of india. Kannada is primarily spoken in the Indian state
 Karnataka.

Kannada Wikipedia has a very interesting heritage. This is the community
that started Wiki outreach programs in India. In fact, the first Indic
wiki workshop that I am aware of was organized by HPN way back in 2004! A lot
of interesting things happened for a while and there was a time when Kannda
has a vibrant 40+ strong community.

However, off late, things appear to have slowed down and the number of
active editors is on a relative decline. Having said that, the seeds have
already been sown in this community and I am confident that with a little
nurturing, we can see activism in Kannada wikipedia coming back. I am
basing my optimism on Kananda Wiktionary -where the community has taken it
to the 2nd largest wiktionary in the country. There is much activism
happening around kannada wiktionary. In Kannada wikipedia I got opportunity
to interact with high prolific editors like User:Radhatanaya who is
 silently doing wonderful job.

Kannada wikipedia has more than 11,000 articles now and kannada wiktionary
has whopping 1,50,000 entries (making it the second biggest Wiktionary
 among Indic language wiktionaries).

Kindly read the experience of Kannada Wikimedians at:

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] An Offline Wikipedia for the Aakaash Tablet?

2011-12-01 Thread Jessie Wild
Hey Everyone!

I am so excited about the content of this email chain! There have been huge
advances in the offline work for India of late.

Quick background: I know many of you know, and Hisham mentioned it earlier,
but I am involved with the offline WIkipedia projects around the world for
WMF, so I have an ok idea about what options are available and who uses our
information (like OLPC or SOS Children's Village or Camara).

For this work, I think it's _imperative_ to get a high-quality, Indic
version available for mass-distribution. But while the full,
all-encompassing offline version might take 6-7 months to develop, there
are bite-sized pieces we can concretely work on so we can start at least
pushing some information out. For example, if we focus on Geography
first, we could perhaps get a really good Geography package set-up and
ready to go by the next pilot, in order to at least get a package out there
- something to have a presence within the distributions. The storage space
on the Aakash tablet and other low-cost devices is minimal, so a limited
content package is actually fine, in many ways.

In the meantime, we can be working on more and more additions, which could
be distributed in-mass as time unfolds. Then people could basically have a
library of content available for their perusal.

Thoughts on this? It helps prevent a complete gap in time for our
execution: we have an AWESOME encyclopedia already available (that's why we
have almost 500M people reading it every month!), and it would be really
sad, I think, to sit on such a resource! One good place to start in terms
of identifying content is to leverage the list of articles use for
the Malayalam Offline edition - that probably would get us a good step of
the way there in terms of which articles are India-relevant and worthy of
inclusion.

I have a lot more I can say about this, but will stop myself here for now :)

I'm a a little confused: the wording says IP will reside with MoHRD if

all, never mind this mission, has come to any part of the Wikimedia

It should in addition be made clear, therefore, that any content taken

Congratulations on a great beginning to what I anticipate will be a high
impact Indian program!

Can you also highlight any significant differences between the strategy for
the Education programme in the US and for the one in India? Thanks.

I'll second what Srikeit wrote in response. Key differences: we're not
limiting ourselves to any academic field, we're doing it focussed as a pilot
in one city (Pune) and we had a full time Fellow.

Just to be clear, the US program started last academic year (2010-11) as a
pilot in various cities but in one academic discipline (Public Policy). Now
it has expanded from the pilot phase and covers an array of academic
disciplines!

great to get an update from him on this timing!

The list of current articles can be seen here:

The primary changes in the version pending release in July 2011 will be

WPFS is geared to match the UK curriculum, which is very useful but
undeniably lacking in its coverage of other geographically important topics,
such as history geography of India.

To that end, if we had a list of ~200 additional articles which *should* be
included in an educational encyclopedia for India, we can add these to the
updated version of WPFS. Kenya is also doing a similar thing (they are
recording their list on the offline projects pages of
metawikihttp://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline_Projects/Content_Development/Schools/Kenyan_Topics).

*
Would anyone be interested in spear-heading this for India-specific content?
*I have some ideas for how this could be facilitated (namely, by leveraging
the work done by the Wikipedia 1.0 team and the India WikiProject [1], so
reach out to me directly!!

Yes - it would be great. Any further contacts on this, Arun?

Based on this article, it sounds like they are keen to have educational
content pre-downloaded onto the computer. We should definitely be bundled
into this package.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Offline article additions

2011-05-06 Thread Jessie Wild
Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to circle back on the progress for the Indian version of the
WIkipedia for Schools[1]. User:BevMo, who is putting together the English
Wikipedia for Schools said they can create a customized version of the 2011
release for India!

All we need is a list of the ~200-300 articles and the permalinks you would
like to add which are specific to India. Would you all like to progress
with this option? It seems like it could be very valuable and hopefully
would not require too much additional work, as I know there is a list on
User:AshLin's page with articles already[2].

I'd love and welcome your thoughts!

Best,
Jessie

[Wikimediaindia-l] Calling all students: student club IRC

lists:))

Hello!

If you are a student and want to become more involved with Wikimedia, be
a leader and organizer on your university campus, and interact with a
global network of like-minded students, starting a STUDENT CLUB could be
a great opportunity for you!

As many of you know, Wikipedia focused university outreach is begin to
take more and more active forms.[1] I was hoping that you would all be
the first to begin the conversations about how students clubs can
effectively become part of the larger Wikimedia movement.[2]

I would love to schedule a time on IRC for us to get together and
brainstorm ways to move forward with the student movement of
Wikip/media. Specific agenda items, time, and channel can be found on
the talk page:
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikipedia_student_clubs.

Please spread the word! All are welcome – specifically current
university college students :)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Choosing topics for Wikipedia for Schools (Offline Ed) - Indian version : #1 Cities

2011-04-14 Thread Jessie Wild

And I feel that there should be a full-fledged project (worldwide, not
just pertaining to indian articles) going on for Wikipedia for
Schools, with a well-structured list of ALL articles that are going
in. Not being able to find anything. Can anyone help in how to go
 about getting one set up?
I'm working on this with Andrew Cates (User:BozMo) - the driver behind
the original Wikipedia for Schools. He gave a list of all the the
articles in Excel so it's a little messy and doesn't have links. I tried
to clean it up a bit, but it still needs some more work and definitely
isn't as useful as it should be:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline_Projects/Content_Development/Schools

As I think you all know, they are working on a 2011 edition of WPFS to
be released soon. Andrew said we can send him a list of additional
articles (up to 250) with permalinks that you (India) would like to have
included in the next release. He says his team could then make a
separate version specifically for India.

My suggestion: once you have the list of articles you want included, put
them in a table on this page as well.

Note: obviously, it would be ideal if the tools were available for
anyone to do this, without needing to go through an intermediary, but
unfortunately such tools do not exist yet. HOWEVER - just so you know,
the Foundation is setting aside resources to address this concern, and
hopefully tools making it easy to extend and/or modify offline
collections will be in place soon!

Jessie

Great idea! It would be great to collaborate with like-minded
organizations wherever possible, and certainly low-hanging fruit in
terms of targeted recruitment.

Let's please document such reports at

In terms of documentation, I wanted to direct you all to the draft
University programming plan currently in development. The general plan
describing the overall need and approach towards university program work
can be found at the outreach wiki:
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_University_Program

Four different models are outlined as ways to reach universities: via
classrooms, student groups, university staff, and outside constituents.
The local Wikimedian Community/chapter falls into this last category,
and the suggestions/activities you recorded here are great examples of
involvement. There is a shell of page for this created on outreach as
well:
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/External_approach_-_example_activities

It would be great to capture some of these thoughts on this last page
specifically!

Thanks again -
Jessie
