competition, and these markets are less free than they should be. And this

Sorry for the old reference, Ultramesh is no long with us. I only consult
at this time. I noticed some companies on your list that are not selling
certified gear, and as such should not be posted publicly as doing so by an
industry journalist. This would cause some people to purchase products
I travel a lot, and over my travels I have become aware of some WISPS who
are using non-certified gear, or using certified gear in a non-certified
way.
One of them puts an amp on almost everything.
Another just puts whatever raw boards he wants to in a box and hangs them
with whatever antenna he

Remember the bell-shaped curve??
There are relatively few exceptional people and relatively few totally
clueless people. Everyone else is more or less in the middle. I'd
suggest the same holds true for the WISP (or any industry).
The top WISPs are likely aware of the power limitations
Here is another WISP operator who has made the decision join and to help
make WISPA the place where WISPs pull together to form our industry.
Congratulations for this step for helping us all to reach our goals as
an industry. We appreciate all the WISPs who have made this step and
look forward

Thanks for the inputs.
FreeWave and MDS were added from a previous reply.
Lightpointe typo corrected.
Wave Wireless / Waverider was sold to Vecima Networks.
ZTE added.
Huawei added.
Almost couldn't find any references to Acton; it's actually Accton,
now added.
Added AWB.
Patrick:
I couldn't find a reference for Optimax that related to Broadband
Wireless Internet Access.
Thanks,
Steve

One fact worth noting is the wireless number. It mostly means cellular.
Cellular is not a third competitor.

(Gently) It's my list. I prefer to not make enemies and call out
companies for being illegal. The bottom line is that without a lot of

Well, for sure this industry never stands still does it Steve? As one

I remember a lot of that transition well. Our first wireless gear in 1997
was WaveAccess. I have no idea what ever happened to them but I remember it
was FHSS. We put an AP in our office attic and served up the local library
and several businesses around our building. The library and
My first radios were Karlnet. In those days they were very robust.
We then migrated to Alvarion (wasn't called that in those days).
It amazes me how this industry has changed in the last decade. We are
actually seeing sub $200 CPE in both 2.4 and 5 GHz, the FBI wants access to
our networks,

Mostly due to inputs from WISPs that made a good point, and as you
did below with Cambridge Broadband, FCC certification is moot outside
the US, so I'm dropping the mention / requirement of FCC

:) Yep. WaveAccess was from Lucent and had the same roots (literally,
through LANair) as BreezeCOM. Lucent discontinued it when they moved to
DSSS, which was better for wireless LAN, at least in terms of what was
allowed per the FCC rules (wide band hopping was never permitted so

putting tape-backed standoffs on these?
Thanks.

If you can find some old Metrocom sectors you will have what you need. I
believe a bunch of them are still up at Blackjack if you want to take
them down. Otherwise, Superpass makes some.

yeah but, most of the Metrocom stuff was around 20 degree beamwidth wide and
60 degree or so beamwidth tall.
A lot of wasted spectrum up in the air, appropriate for a lot of small
channel sectors and freq hoppers, but not so good for 3 usable DSSS channels
and 360 deg coverage.

We drill through the back metal case, and silicone really well.
Pac Wireless's site may have had a document suggesting a good way to

But my answer was to buy Teletronics, Acconet, or MTI panels, that have a

In msot cases I'd rather pay than cut

I had thought about those, but unfortunately they are only 30 degrees wide.
You'd have a fortune in Access points tied up in order to get a full circle,
even if you assumed they would really cover 60 degrees.
Of course that almost sounds like a 6 way cluster of Canopy APs at that
point.

We just got back from FCC and FTC visits yesterday. A couple notes...
1) Both meetings had full staff attending, which I consider an honor. Each
meeting lasted about 2 hours.
2) Some of the WISPs had to cancel due to weather, but 3 made it, George

I e-mailed them and told them it needs a remote pendant (with variable speed
- much slower) - if slow enough, we could tie off on the way up with little
physical exertion. I am fat and old :-)

I just want to thank you men for taking the time, money and effort to be

I look forward to my turn even though I don't have the time - -I feel its
each of our duties to make the time.
