Re: [WISPA] WISP Business Broker Recommendations to Sell WISP?

2017-12-06 Thread Justin Wilson
Having been involved in several sales (7 to be exact) here is what I know.
Please know I am tech guy and there are much better business folks on here that
could talk circles around me. I just have been in the thick.

-Have as much of everything documented as you can. Tower sites, IPs, where
stuff is. You would be surprised how many WISPs don’t.
-Have contracts on your towers/grain legs/rooftops/whatever. Nothing makes a
buyer more nervous then not knowing if their towers will be there tomorrow. Do
this now because if tower owners catch wind of you selling they may demand
better terms. Get them locked in when things are running normal.
-Don’t get hung up on your equipment. Don’t let the buyer try to negotiate you
down based upon your equipment too. Most successful sales I see focus less on
the equipment and more on the business. What does the business do today if
nothing is changed? How much money does it bring in? Where can we trim costs
without doing a single upgrade?
-Have stats on backhaul capacities, AP capacities, etc. Potential buyers look
at this for promotions, upping speed packages in areas, etc.

If you have to choose have the business side in order before the tech side.
The tech side can be fixed with money. If the business side is missing money
because clients aren’t being billed, lots of collections, etc. then it’s an
uphill battle.

Just some random thoughts.

Re: [WISPA] Looking for startup suggestions

2017-02-08 Thread Justin Wilson
We have helped several startup wisps, and I’ve been a startup myself. Quick
10,000 foot overview.

1.Invest in a good backend from the start. Billing, monitoring, etc. That way
you can concentrate on installing customers.
2.Make the network modular enough to swap out vendors down the road.
3.Don’t get too caught up on technology. Create some goals, have a coverage
area, and then see what vendors fit that.
4.Plan for growth on your backbone internet connections. Have a game plan if
you need 50 megs, 100, 500, etc.
5.Attend WispAmerica next month. Lots of info.

Cliff,
Why don’t you create a “lists@“ or a separate e-mail for each list you are on?
That way you don’t have to see everything 24/7

Short of hardware issues 60GHZ links (and have done 80ghz) links are very
precise. Make sure your mounts are rock solid. We are talking a 5mm
wavelength at 60GHZ. It’s very easy to get on a side lobe as well and still
have good signal but poor throughput. I know that’s not the original issue.

Re: [WISPA] Cambium OEMs Ceragon for PTP

2014-10-07 Thread Justin Wilson
It could create a better support and supply chain for the folks who are not
high volume customers. The two companies may agree that Ceragon won¹t focus
on the smaller markets such as WISPs, and let Cambium do that. If cambium
focuses on that market then Ceragon may devote more resources to product
development and different markets.

Just a possibility. But what do I know.

Re: [WISPA] Ticketing software

2014-08-18 Thread Justin Wilson
Part of it depends on what your end goal is. If you want to transfer these
tickets into billing or do you just want to keep track of everything. And in
what capacity are you using it? If it¹s for an ISP I would use on integrated
with billing.

Otherwise OS ticket is good.

We use the ticketing in FreshBooks because we can convert it into billable
time easily.

I will only consider requests to the registered agent contact information.
This e-mail has an auto-responder which asks for a non form letter to be
e-mailed and USPS mailed. Once these two criteria have been met we will
respond accordingly. Since e-mail has no verified Identity I have no way of
knowing if they are who they say they are. In our response we ask for a
telephone call at the least to verify identity, but prefer a certified
letter.

I understand that in order for an ISP to limit its liability regarding the
copyright infringements of its customers, it must comply with the Digital
Millennium Copyright Act, in particular its ³notice and take down² and
³"counter notice and put back² procedures.

I believe these procedures are compliant:

===

a. Analyze the notification to make sure it contains content that
complies with these provisions:

(i) A physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act on
behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

(ii) Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed,
or, if multiple copyrighted works at a single online site are covered by a
single notification, a representative list of such works at that site.

(iii) Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing or to
be the subject of infringing activity and that is to be removed or access to
which is to be disabled, and information reasonably sufficient to permit the
service provider to locate the material.

(iv) Information reasonably sufficient to permit the service provider to
contact the complaining party, such as an address, telephone number, and, if
available, an electronic mail address at which the complaining party may be
contacted.

(v) A statement that the complaining party has a good faith belief that use
of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the
copyright owner, its agent, or the law.

(vi) A statement that the information in the notification is accurate, and
under penalty of perjury, that the complaining party is authorized to act on
behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

b. If the notification substantially complies with clauses (ii), (iii),
and (iv) but not other clauses, reply to the notification requesting
clarification.

c. Once the notification substantially complies with all clauses,
disable access to the infringing content (for example, by shutting down
bittorrent on the customer¹s connection) and contact the customer to inform
them of the notification and that access to the content has been disabled.

d. Inform the notifier that appropriate action has been taken and
request to be informed if the infringement recurs.

e. If the customer confirms that they have removed the infringing
material from their system, and if requested, reenable bittorrent on their
connection.

Adam

Re: [WISPA] Download of Copyrighted Material - What do you do?

2014-08-16 Thread Justin Wilson
Not telling them to pirate. Lots of legit reasons for P2P. If I am
connecting to only encrypted peers then the ³script kiddies² have a harder
time seeing what folks are doing. It does not make them anonymous, no more
than nat makes your home network secure. However, it does act like nat by
clouding the data some.

Many of these ³law firms² have interns sitting around all day scouring p2p
sites. If they find someone and their data is harder to lookup they simply
move on. The more sophisticated ones have programs which automate all this.
If you are harder to see then you get put to the bottom of the list.

I did a test about a year ago. Put 2 mac minis in a co-lo. Spent two days
downloading everything that was hot on the trackers. On had a client only
connecting to encrypted peers. The other did not. The unencrypted client
received 10 or so notices. The other only received two. The watchers can
run encrypted peers too, but the data is harder to get.

Re: [WISPA] Network Monitoring Program

2014-08-16 Thread Justin Wilson
For most of our folks we use a combination of the Dude from Mikrotik and
Nagios, and usually throw in Cacti. The dude is easy to understand, doubles
as network documentation, and is good for the CSR folks to look at a glance.
Dude can also replace Cacti if you desire. It just doesn’t create pretty
graphs. We mainly use cacti for co-lo and bandwidth customers. It
calculates 95th percentile internally. You can also setup cacti to graph all
kinds of stuff you don’t necessarily want to monitor, but are helpful to
keep track of. For example, wireless signal/ccq/jitter/whatever, BGP routes,
temperature, voltage, and other SNMP data.

Nagios is great at knowing the difference between latency and a link
actually being down. It has a ton of extra knowledge about stuff you don’t
find in the Dude. Nagios has a learning curve for sure, but it’s worth it.
If you use the newer versions or even the paid version that learning curve
isn’t as steep. Nagios also can do distributed monitoring to split up load
or make your monitoring a little more fault tolerant.

My monitoring box has a VM with Dude, a VM with Nagios, and a VM with
Cacti. The only reason Cacti is separated is because I like to use
cacti-ez. It sets everything up and away it goes.

Re: [WISPA] Download of Copyrighted Material - What do you do?

2014-08-14 Thread Justin Wilson
I just forward it on with a note that if they don¹t know this is going on
they should investigate it. If they do I would recommend they use an
encrypted P2P client or turn on encryption.

We forward the notice to offending customer and let them know that uploading
and downloading of copyright content is not allowed. Recently we've been
getting more notices and several from the same people. So I've started
suspending the account until they call and acknowledge the notice we've sent
them.
I'm really not trying to be the bittorrent police. However, when someone
downloads 56Gb in three days of torrents and doesn't respond to the emails.
We feel that is a gross waste of network resources and want them to
understand what they are doing.

I guess part of it depends on where and what. If you are going into a co-lo

It also has some employee time things as add ons. I like it because it¹s a

[WISPA] MBA final thesis on WISP

2014-05-27 Thread Justin Wilson
Folks,
My wife is doing her Master¹s thesis on a business plan of starting a WISP.
This is a little more geared toward the financial side of things. Since I
am a geek this is not my strong suit. Does anyone have any marketing plans,
business plans, etc. they would care to share off list?

As a by-product I have been in the process of writing a ³starting a WISP²
book. I do plan on incorporating some of her research into this. I don¹t
plan on using anyone¹s proprietary info. But I will definitely give credit
where credit is due.

Thanks in advance,

Justin

Darin,
I will have Andrew send you an e-mail from supp...@mtin.net.

Just for everyone¹s reference if you need to get ahold of ³me² you can do so
at the following:
Phone: 317.644.2224
Email: supp...@mtin.net

I wrote a little blog post this morning as kind of ³therapy² for me. As
many of you know I have been a principal in a WISP we started after the
failed sale of NDWave to another company.
http://www.mtin.net/blog/?p=50

The sale of ZigWireless has been my latest ³project². I am personally
invested in this so my future of getting this done has been a top priority.
So much so that everything else has suffered as a result. The life of a
WISP. LOL. I feel like a ³Veteran² after being in the ISP business since
1993.

Just so this isn¹t just about me, if anyone wants to know my thoughts on a
sale from a tech perspective hit me up off list and I will be glad to share.

[WISPA] Perils of Public DNS

2014-04-02 Thread Justin Wilson
http://www.bgpmon.net/turkey-hijacking-ip-addresses-for-popular-global-dns-p
roviders/

At BGPmon we see numerous BGP hijacks every single day, some are interesting
because of the size and scale of the hijack or as we¹ve seen today because
of the targeted hijacked prefixes.
It all started last weekend when the Turkish president ordered the
censorship of twitter.com. This started with a block of twitter by returning
false twitter IP addresses by Turk Telekom DNS servers. Soon users in
Turkey discovered that changing DNS providers to Google DNS or OpenDNS was a
good method of bypassing the censorship
<https://twitter.com/bgpmon/status/447894140257202176> .
But as of around 9am UTC today (Saturday March 29) this changed when Turk
Telekom started to hijack the IP address for popular free and open DNS
providers such as Google¹s 8.8.8.8, OpenDNS¹ 208.67.222.222 and Level3¹s
4.2.2.2.

https://twitter.com/bgpmon
Looks like stuff started happening again today.

Re: [WISPA] Help Me Understand This WiMax Show We Had...

2014-03-27 Thread Justin Wilson
As stated earlier Wimax is frequency independent. Wimax is also
referred
to as 802.16x. Last I knew they were up to revisionE, but I could be
wrong. Wimax is the ³generic term² for 802.16 just like wifi is the
generic term for 802.11. Wimax allows 8 bits per hertz no matter the
frequency used. 3.65 Wimax is the common frequency available to the normal
WISP operator.

Re: [WISPA] Selling ISP

2014-03-19 Thread Justin Wilson
Having been a part of a deal gone bad I recommend cash up front. Once you
hand over the keys it¹s pretty hard to get it back. If you have to go to
Litigation you are going to be spending money out of pocket for attorneys.
I agree with Cameron. Cash at closing. If you don¹t do 100% cash at
closing you should be prepared to not see another dime if you do anything
else.

I know ISPs who sold, got some money at closing, and then ended up spending
twice that money on attorney fees and still ended up with nothing. Selling
a business should be like selling a high dollar item. If I was going to
sell a car I sure wouldn¹t sell it on contract. Too many things can go
wrong.

If I had 100% ownership in an ISP today and wanted to sell I would take a
hit on the overall price. If then user couldn¹t afford it and I really
needed to sell for whatever reason I would simply take a lower price. Less
stress that way.

Traffic to Google's commonly used public DNS service was rerouted over the

for Google's servers ended up at a Venezuelan network instead.

UK telco BT's Latin America division in Venezuela became the destination for
the IP address range used by Google, in a phenomenon known as BGP (border

It¹s my understanding that contractors can¹t punch a time clock.
Provided you have the legal stuff worked out have him use a ticket system
which logs hours. If you don¹t have one fresh books is web based and pretty
cheap. You can keep track of projects, open support tickets, bill based upon
those tickets, notes, all kinds of things. http://www.freshbooks.com

Re: [WISPA] Video of Tower work from Quadcopter

2014-01-18 Thread Justin Wilson
Well there are good monopoles and there are bad. No safety climb on one
like that makes it a huge pain. If it had a safety climb it would be
tolerable. Monopoles present mounting challenges (notice the chain mounts).

Re: [WISPA] HAM colo costs

2014-01-13 Thread Justin Wilson
Many folks look at Ham radio as a public service. Several tower owners
I
know do bartering. The hams use pool resources together and can do so in
times of emergencies. Plus, if they can become a customer they can be an
asset. During the last snow storm here in Indiana several hams personally
helped me get out to a tower site that was without power. One of them had
a standby generator which we used to power the site for about 17 hours.

The attacks we are seeing are DNS amplification or open web proxy ports. If
you have web proxy enabled on your mikrotiks disable that. Same goes for any
unneeded services/packages. Eric Rogers posted a DDOS script awhile back
which works well.

Re: [WISPA] Surge Protection for UBNT Gear

These are good. The biggest thing I see folks overlook is the grounding of
the tower/electrical. It does you no good to ground stuff if the grounding
plane is not good. I have seen multiple grounds on brand new towers, weak
grounds, and things bonded to the wrong spots.

Re: [WISPA] Equipment for Fiber+Power to tower top

2013-11-06 Thread Justin Wilson
We do fiber to the top. Here are my philosophical thoughts on this.

Get a device that is temperature rated for your environment. The RB20011's
are fine for our environment. They are rated for the same temps as the
industrial rated switches we used to use. If you want a "hardened" switch
be prepared to spend $500-1000 for a managed Industrial switch. Believe me,
you will want to see what those switch ports are doing so an unmanaged
switch is no good. Plus you will probably want to run vlans and some other
things at one point.

If you are running clean DC you will find you won't really have a need to
reboot stuff. Anything you add to the box at the top is something else that
can fail. The PacketFlux stuff is solid, but yet another thing to fail.
If you are running Canopy then you will have to put more stuff in the box.

We put our routers at the bottom, but that is just our choice. I know folks
who are putting them at the top. Would save you some labor and cost on
running fiber.

Justin

[WISPA] Moto ptp 250

2013-10-10 Thread Justin Wilson
Hey all,
I have a weird issue on a moto ptp 250 link. I have a router /29 between
two routers with two 250s providing the backhaul. I can ping the units, but
can't web into them. They don't have telnet or ssh from what I see. If I
go out and plug directly into them I can get into them just fine via IP. Is
there something I am missing? It's not firewall rules or anything.

Re: [WISPA] Blocking Torrents

2013-06-03 Thread Justin Wilson
The problem with us isn't the party who initiated the complaint. The
upstream providers are getting more and pushy that we need to give them (the
backbone provider) a resolution. If not they say it violates the Terms of
Service. Cogent is the worst about this. We have actually had them turn us
off because we did not answer complaints.

RF armor shields and actual ice shields on the tower. It doesn't take much.
Basically a grate hooked to the tower a foot or so above your antennas. If
in doubt find the lower marker lights on the tower. They will most likely
have an ice guard above them. Use that as a design.

Our approach was to VRRP the CCR with an X86 product. This way if the

Re: [WISPA] Ubiquiti Radios as routers

2012-10-18 Thread Justin Wilson
There are several things you can do to alleviate issues. Greg Osborn is
right. Most customers don't know a difference. We do several "tricks" on
various networks.

1.We do 1:MANY nats at every POP. This way only those customers at that
site are natted out a Public. This way the entire network does not go
through a single public IP.

2.We do run the UBNT radios in router mode. However, everyone goes out the
door with the DMZ enabled with a specific IP on the lag side. If we have a
customer call and request a public for whatever reason it's a simple
process. We change the IP in billing, they reboot, PPPoE assigns the
public. All they have to do is statically set their router/PC ip to the IP
which is in the DMZ. This works for 98% of customers.

Great network. Great support. Much better than they were 5 years ago.
As
with any other provider they do have issues from time to time. It goes
without saying get 2 upstreams and do BGP.

Re: [WISPA] Ubiquiti next product.... another router?

2012-09-14 Thread Justin Wilson
They can sniff all they want. It's no different than some unscrupulous
tech plugging into a switch upstream. SSL banking is encrypted, google
passwords are encrypted, etc. Anyone who is sending unencrypted traffic on
the public Internet can be sniffed any number of places. I choose to not
waste my CPU cycles on encypt/decrypt. We have other forms of
authentication to keep users off the network.

Some things from the UBNT change log:

- Improvement: WPA/WPA2-TKIP security stability improvements in noisy
environments

- Improvement: WPA/WPA2 EAP-TTLS improvements
- Improvement: Connection stability improvement when using WPA/WPA2
security

Some of these are older but we definitely saw the bugs.

Re: [WISPA] Ubiquiti next product.... another router?

2012-09-14 Thread Justin Wilson
We have had almost zero problems with UBNT gear and lockups. However, most
people disagree with me on my setups.

1.I run zero encryption on the Aps. Several reasons but the short is 1)UBNT
has had issues with WEP/WPA/WPA2 code. 2) my upstream provider is not
encrypted so why should I? See my blog for more rants on this.

2.We run Airmax only. No 802.11 clients.

3.We invest heavily in clean power to the Aps. Conditioned batteries. 3
Stages Chargers/power supplies. Fiber up the tower, etc.

4.We are religious about the Client firmware being the same as the AP
firmware. The version is not as important as everything has to match. If
the ap is 5.3.5 then all the clients have to be 5.3.5, even if we have to
downgrade.

5.We use the priority on the client side. If you have a weak client set them
lower.

By doing this we have grown from 0 clients to 1500 in just shy of 2 years on
an all UBNT wireless network. 40+ towers with probably 150+ UBNT devices
(aps, backhauls). I can't remember a lockup problem due to something not
related to the above.

Re: [WISPA] Ubiquiti next product.... another router?

2012-09-14 Thread Justin Wilson
How many of you remember how long it took the Mikrotik product to become
truly stable? I didn't feel 100% comfortable with wired routing until
version 3.x. Wireless was kinda flaky until 3.x as well. 4.x really
improved things.

It's all about software. At least UBNT has a great knowledge base to work
with from the start. I look for several revisions before it is ready for
primetime. Nothing against UBNT, but it's software.

Re: [WISPA] FCC broadband deployment report

2012-08-27 Thread Justin Wilson
I am guessing they get some of the information from the Sam Knows
broadband report. Over a year ago you could signup on
http://www.samknows.com/ and they sent you a Netgear router with some
custom firmware. Everynow and then they pull tests from your router. I
get a report each month on the top speeds, averages, latency, etc.

I am not sure how many of these are out there but it was a pretty
popular
program with the masses. I heard a ton of conspiracy theories on the
lists so I doubt many of you have them. I tried to get some of our clients
to do it, but they were too weirded out about the privacy. I think now
the WISPs are not as represented in SamKnows as they should be.

2012-05-31 Thread Justin Wilson
Somethings which might help. Depends on what you are looking for:

Visio http://visio.microsoft.com/en-us/pages/default.aspx
Visio is in use by many network departments, especially in corporate america

DIA http://projects.gnome.org/dia/
Can run unde *nix, OSX, and Windows. Requires some tweaking.

OmniGraffle http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnigraffle/
Mac OSX

SmartDraw http://www.smartdraw.com

LucidChart http://www.lucidchart.com/
This is neat because it can be installed into Google Aps. Downside is it is
a subscription based thing.

Most tower stuff goes pretty quick at Dayton. The hams trade towers back and
forth so it's nothing for them to put up and take down towers, unlike us.

Re: [WISPA] Customer Routers

2012-04-27 Thread Justin Wilson
Part of my point is we don't do computer repair. We are a communications
provider. Some might see an opportunity to upsell the customer to a router.
The margin is not there unless you are doing computer repair and have the
staff for it. We do sell managed services to businesses only, but that's a
whole different animal. The guy paying $30 a month isn't cost effective to
tweak a router we sold him everytime his pings to xboxlive jump 10ms.

I look at it as Satellite. I know many many people who jump back and forth
to Dish and Directv. Many of them wait until they have problems with the DVR
or receiver. If the provider won't replace it for free they switch and get
the promotion. How many of you have done that? :-) If the customer
associates the router with your service you better be prepared to replace it
should something happen. E

Re: [WISPA] Customer Routers

2012-04-27 Thread Justin Wilson
Yes there are. But the ones who don't know what you are doing cost you
money, time, and reputation.

Had one guy just the other day called every time his Internet went out. This
had been going on for 3 days. It would go out for 3-4 minutes at a time.
He's a gamer and belongs to some Clan. Guy was so irate one of the younger
techs went out and sat with him for an hour. During that time his Internet
went out 3 times. Tech breaks out a 751, hooks it up, Internet lasts an
hour. Hooks his router backup and within 15 minutes Internet goes out.

We were willing to give him the 751 and just charge him for the service
call. The Customers response was "I paid $200 for this gaming router. If you
can't make it work I am switching". Even if we installed our own router he
was going to hook up his gaming router anyway because the box said
"optimized for online gaming".

Service was pulled, he want to the 15 meg Wild Blue, and now he is begging
to come back because he can't deal with 700ms ping times.

This customer was so clueless and such a loud mouth he scared away 3
installs, not to mention all the support time. That is why we don't install
software. Most of the time we si the customer in front of the computer and
walk them through the configuration. No room for "I don't know what they did
to my computer but now my printer doesn't work."

Re: [WISPA] Customer Routers

2012-04-26 Thread Justin Wilson
My Take on routers.

Off the shelf routers are the #1 trouble issue on the Zig network. Anything
from gaming issues, to speed issues, to reliability issues. They account for
roughly 92% of all calls. The first thing we have the customer do after
reboots of everything is bypass the router. Most of the time this shows the
customer it's their router, or something behind it.

In our past life we started out selling routers. We looked for the cheapest
ones we could find, which at the time were dlink. What we found was
customers then considered that our equipment. "Well the router you sold me
went out." was something we heard a lot. Or "I reset the router now you have
to come out and configure it"

What we are doing this time around is we have only one officially approved
router. The Mikrotik 751. We have a local computer shop which stocks them
and sets them up. What he does as far as support is between him and the
customer. I am pretty sure he tells them he is just a retailer for the
product and if they want his help he will gladly charge them his hourly
rate. All about expectations up front.

By doing all of this we are not in the router business, but the customer
gets a solid product and cuts down on our calls. In turn we have a happier
customer base. And if need be, we can actually login to their router and do
torch, etc.

Re: [WISPA] UNBT PowerBridge 10

Not available in the U.S.

11GHZ or 6GHZ is still the way to go in the lower frequencies. Too bad
6ghz (and 7 for that matter) still require a 6 foot dish.

There is not much to their service so they have never maintained their

Re: [WISPA] Preventing stupid outages

2012-03-16 Thread Justin Wilson
My point was if Code actually requires it, which in this case it may
not,
don't replace it because it's an inconvenience. You are potentially
liable if something were to happen if you are the one who went against
code. Instead find a workaround. If code doesn't require it, get an
inspector to sign off.

Re: [WISPA] ethernet and towers with FM transmitters

2012-02-29 Thread Justin Wilson
The biggest thing I stress with any FM tower is to get an experienced FM
tower climber crew to give your their opinion on the tower before
installing any equipment on it. Too many times I have seen an FM tower
with poor grounds, missing grounds, improperly installed hardline, etc.
Many times I have found it to be the "tower" more than your equipment.
Some of my guys were on a small FM station with a 2k transmitter. The
tower had 1 small ground, and was missing the bonding to the tower. The
tower is named sparky due to the RF charging the whole tower. No amount
of work on the cat-5 could have ever fixed this.

Re: [WISPA] Advertising ARIN IPs via BGP

2012-01-27 Thread Justin Wilson
If they are following proper protocols you have to tell your upstream
what netblocks you are going to advertise to them, they verify this and
write route-maps/filters to allow this through. They then contact their
upstream and tell them the same thing. Repeat this up the chain. It's
one of the very few protections BGP has.

[WISPA] Level3 issues

2011-11-07 Thread Justin Wilson
Anyone with Level 3 might be experiencing issues this morning

Level3 Outage - Likely Juniper Bug
<http://blog.phyber.com/level3-outage-likely-juniper-bug>Information
<http://blog.phyber.com/level3-outage-likely-juniper-bug%3EInformation> is
still limited at this time - at approximately 14:15 UTC an event occured
causing our BGP Sessions with Level3 to reset and re-establish five minutes
later.
There are confirmed reports that this event within Level3 has affected most
of North America. This outage has affected other networks running Juniper
routers with the majority of them seeing their devices core dump and reload.
At this point the speculation is that a new BGP Update Bug within specific
Juniper version trains was just discovered/triggered.
Phyber's engineering staff will be monitoring the situation closely and will
disable our Level3 peerings if necessary to maintain stability of the
network.

Re: [WISPA] Neighbor Sharing Internet

2011-11-01 Thread Justin Wilson
Can you service those other customers? If not, it opens up an
opportunity
for yet another revenue stream. We call it the "network neighborhood".
We all have areas which can't be serviced, and the amount of households do
not justify putting up your own equipment. This is where you get the
neighbors together and have them foot the bill for a small tower and some
radios. We have successfully done this many times now with various ISPs.

Either way your customer is in violation in some for or another of most
AUP's. Instead of firing the customer turn it into a positive if
possible, especially if you can't service the other customer.

Is anyone using a service, package, etc. which allows your customers to
opt-in to receive text message alerts? I heard at Vegas some ISP customers
really liked this feature.

Re: [WISPA] Looking for Linux Consultant

2011-10-18 Thread Justin Wilson
Basically setup the new server to match the settings of the old one. I am
talking about mail server, apache, etc. You then backup the sites within
webmin and then restore on the new server. Biggest issue I have ever had is
with servers running postfix. You have to make sure things like username
format, Maildir location and permissions, etc. all match up across the
board. What I do is I have a test domain, in my case it's a site dedicated
to my Import tuner car. It has a few e-mail addresses, a MYSQL database,
and some other things. It's a live site so I use it to test. I always move
it over first and let it sit for 4-5 days. I test mail, reachability, etc.
If all goes well then I move the rest over. Our biggest server has 150
virtual domains under virtualmin.

If you are using Centos I would look into Virtualmin and webmin. The main
reason I say this is Virtualmin allows you to migrate to new servers very
easily. Takes some setting up, but I have been doing it since CentOS 3 and
have no issues. Migrated to new hardware and OS probably 7 times now.

Re: [WISPA] Power for tower sites

2011-09-27 Thread Justin Wilson
I have seen the all DC thing done a few ways.

1.2 deep cycle batteries for the 24 volt stuff and 1 12 volt for routers.
This requires 2 chargers. The advantage is you can power the routers
without them overheating, especially the 450's.

2.You can get a box which steps down voltage from 24 to 12.

We will be at Vegas and can show you how we do things.

Start reading here for ISPS:

The legal advice I have been given has always been e-mail is not a legal
document. Responding to e-mails is more of a courtesy/CYA than anything.
Make sure you have a designated agent. All official communication is
supposed to go through this agent.

Re: [WISPA] DMCA Takedown

2011-09-26 Thread Justin Wilson
If I get repeated requests for the same customer my response to a customer
is to tell them they may have a virus, spyware, or a teenager. I spin it
where the very act of doing this is slowing down the customer's connection.
If they are a customer who seems reasonable it might be prudent to mention
such activities could expose them to lawsuits by movie companies. I don't
mention illegal as to not freak out most customers. On the flipside you
have the customers who share files just to be defiant to the RIAA. I don't
have time to debate them.

I typically do not pass on the request directly to the customer. Too many
shady firms out there. If the customer contacts them they can be bullied
into paying money. I just file these requests away and do respond to CYA.
