Mikrotik did have some very nasty BGP lock-up problems and
multi-processor lock-up bugs. It definitely wasn't the hardware
because once they got it fixed, everything worked fine on the exact
same hardware. BGP would just die. Router would still be up and

I would have to agree. Have had routers doing lot of work that had uptime
over a year (one that almost hit 500 days but lightning got the better of
one ethernet port). The ones I seen problems it tend to be bad PC hardware
or
B450G works great as 5 managed port switches and very affordable.

Largest difference I have seen is in regards to load (and cost)
Freeware community editions ... well cost is pretty low - especially
if you have vmware already running, xen running - or a good pc or
server around.

What Vyatta does is pretty cool. And they have also been giving back to open
source community some of the source they write fixes to.

A year or so back an employer I worked at had issues with Vyatta on Dell
hardware. It was no fault of Vyatta's; Vyatta is based on Debian and
either the Debian or the kernel maintainers had decided to change/remove
the network driver from that particular release.
