Perhaps a good analogy would be that of using rubbing compound on a car.
 A little elbow grease and compound makes it shine and protects the
paint...too much, too often, for too long... no paint.

 Of course, people completely repaint themselves every 7 years...unless you
only live for 6.

Exfoliation can make for good smooth skin, but you 'can' scrub your skin
completely off faster than it grows back with a Luffa sponge.
