The safest and best storage subsystem is the one based on no RAIDHBA of any kind, just a bunch of disks + ZFS. No battery backedup cache, write caches disabled. Disks with "server" firmware. No RAID systems with the most basic kind of controller there isare the most reliable. When it comes to data safety, simplicity is best. ZFS does therest. Ironically and fortunately, this is also the cheapest ap-proach. Finding motherboards without built-in RAID HBA’s is a challengethough; it seems that nowadays every manufacturer wants to shovecrappy RAID controllers with poor reliability and no observabili-ty down our collective throats. > I have a lot of RAID cards (also on Sun/Oracle hardware!) that cannot be> > used as JBOD, so I've configured them using RAID0 for each disk. Yep, and ZFS does the rest. ------------------------------------------- smartos-discuss Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/184463/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/184463/25769125-55cfbc00 Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=25769125&id_secret=25769125-7688e9fb Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
