Our kit is very SmartOS friendly. We typically test new OS releases about every quarter, and work with some of our partners to get more drivers in (cxgbe, ...). We have a number of customers using the kit with SmartOS for cloudy things.

If you are looking at SuperMicro (SMC), focus on the LSI 2208 in IT mode. We've used the 2U twin for some customers, and it works well, though as with all SuperMicro kit, the cooling leaves a great deal to be desired (which is why we tend to re-engineer it when we use their kit). Note: if you do use the LSI 2208, get a copy of the sas2ircu, so you can light up devices ID LEDs correctly (we are adapting something we wrote on Linux a while ago to run on SmartOS to help users correctly identify which drive is which as this turns out to be non trivial for zfs and non-HW raid).

We've had a few nasty surprises on BIOS revisions on SMC kit, in that BIOS tables set during POST aren't always what one might expect. Which leads to some very interesting/painful crashes.
