The board that should stand out is the one we use. It stands out
because it has a 2308 with IT-mode firmware on it. That board can be
used in many of their 1U, 2U, and larger chassis. Basically you pick
the chassis form factor that you need based on add-on card count,
storage bay count, and DC management practices, then stick the
X9DRD-7JLN4F in it. I cannot recommend any other of their boards as (a)
we do not have experience with most of them and (b) they have either HW
RAID controllers or rely entirely on AHCI and are thus unsuitable for
production use.
A small anecdote to back that up...
Recently I had a production Solaris box go of the rails due to a drive
going really slow (up to seconds of service time). The drives are
connected to an LSI RAID card, configured as single volume RAID0 virtual
drives. There was no warning from ZFS, no errors reported.
Today I had a play with MegaCli and sure enough, the card reported 1435
"Other" errors for that drive. There were also 474 media errors
reported for another.
So the moral of the story is don't trust RAID cards, they hide device
errors from FMA/ZFS.
