Right.  We do not support nor use JBODs however, and IIRC we actually
have that part removed.

Not really.  The limitations have more to do with hotplug, debugging,
command translation, and error recovery.  Performance is fine.

The board that should stand out is the one we use.  It stands out
because it has a 2308 with IT-mode firmware on it.  That board can be
used in many of their 1U, 2U, and larger chassis.  Basically you pick
the chassis form factor that you need based on add-on card count,
storage bay count, and DC management practices, then stick the
X9DRD-7JLN4F in it.  I cannot recommend any other of their boards as (a)
we do not have experience with most of them and (b) they have either HW
RAID controllers or rely entirely on AHCI and are thus unsuitable for
production use.  We buy from SMCI primarily because they make a board
with the correct onboard Ethernet (i350) and HBA (2308-IT) devices.
