Yes, that is exactly how Ciaran's example worked and in fact my scene would not function unless the attributes were forced in this way.
I was caching geometry from using the main functionality from Fabricio's PowerExtrude which has many attributes but I think limiting is not a good option and wouldn't it be better to specify which ones you wanted or needed at cache time and then Softimage actually cached them?
