Hi Gerbrand, in my experience, if wou want to make vr content for mobile i would recommend you samsung gear vr rather than cardboard. We been testing on mobile users and must say cardboard isn“t a pretty chance to VR due to lag, comfort, and latency depending on mobile model.Samusng gear vr is is definitely more expensive but has a growing market, and a nice store for apps. In terms of software, you said it, Unity reminds me of Maya or Max, where you can do 3d, and Unreal reminds me softimage where you enjoy doing 3d...
