Folks,

You've heard "We will work with you" from two of the most influential people in the desktop space within Oracle (Wim and Brad). Take that as a good sign. Brad is the "Sergeant Major" of sales (those without a military background, SM is the most powerful "everyday" person) and Wim is an executive VP. It's not like your hearing this from a (non-developing) Developer. (cough...cough)

As someone who has seem VMWare go to the "money grubbing" EMC and Tarantella and Star Office go to the "money grubbing" Sun Microsystems, all I can say is give us a bit of time. No one benefits from less customers.

Oracle is learning how to become a hardware company, and "the company formerly known as Sun Microsystems" is learning how to become a (profitable) software company. Despite what some had said to date, there is nothing wrong with being profitable.

The one thing I will object to are the threads and tangents of costly "support". The likes of Brad, OttoM, and "super OCD script correcting" Bob Doolittle are the reason those of us who run SRSS on Ubuntu and other non-supported Linux distros can do so successfully. Believe it or not, most of that work was done in their "free time". Just like I'm typing this up past 11:30 PM on a Thursday night. (But I'm listening to the Eagles, so it's OK)

A lot of us, from sales to engineering (and now with Wim this includes the "Ivory towers" or blue-ish green glass towers in Redwood Shores), care a lot about our product. We take the time away from our schedules to answer and provide what we can in a non-formal manner.

I can tell you chasing the very server this email will bounce around export control and approvals cost me at least 6 weeks and probably about a good 1/2 inch of hairline (seriously, it's ridiculous shipping "free stuff" to some countries). It was also donated by Sun Ray Engineering, the very same Sun Ray engineering that exists today.

Please return the favor of believing in us as we do in you. As both Wim and Brad (i.e. the "Big Wigs") have stated, we will work with you. Not only that, we want to work with you. If that wasn't true you wouldn't see a lot of us on this list.

Regards and Cheers!,

"ThinGuy"
