Processors do die, and heat is the main enemy. I have a friend with an Apple
G4 500 dual, and one of the processors on the dual card is dead. The cost to
fix it is too high, so it sits in a closet. Shame.

The first thing I'd want to know with your upgrade card is, does it work in
another S900, or beige G3 or similar. If it's dead, it's dead, but not
knowing for sure is annoying.

You know Tim, an S900 with the original 604e, and plenty of RAM can do a
lot. It makes a nice partner to a newer Apple tower, and will probably tick
along for a long while yet. Great for kids to surf on and do homework on, or
for a designated task like mp3 serving, or CD burning.

I do hope your G3 card can be resurrected. I'd be annoyed with that card not
working too. But the first thing I think I'd do, is a completely clean
install of everything I need the S900 to run... from the System on down...
and weed out everything that's not needed. Stick with Apple disk drivers and
low level format your drives as a first step. I'd also consider starting
with a base S900, and add the PCI cards and other hardware back one by one,
starting with the G3 upgrade, or skipping it if it's dead. It's tedious, but
it's a labor of love for many computer owners, and it may turn up a point in
the exercise where stability breaks down.

I won't go on about doing strict backups beforehand... you know.

Sorry for rambling, =)
