Yes, always drag the icon to the trash first.
And sometimes you can't drag the card to the trash if the application that's reading the info off the card is still active.
This rule also applies to external firewire drives - drag the icon/s to the trash before turning off the drive.
(And always turn off the drive before unplugging the firewire cable !)
