Yes.
No smoking devices? The dealer whom I purchased the firewire card from said
he's had a customer who experienced "smoke" when they plugged in a firewire
bus powered device and was reluctant to recommend the use of such devices.
 

Not a problem with bus-powered devices.
However, any firewire device with its own power supply, such as an 
external HD, should be plugged in and powered up afterwards.
I do this dispite all claims of hot-swapability.
