To add to Alan's Lexar CF reader topic-always drag to card image from the desktop to the trash before you remove the card from the reader to avoid data corruption, This is in the card reader instructions.

I need to clarify this with one more point.
My answer is for bus powered devices, which is what the Lexar CF reader is.
If for some reason you have a A/C powered card reader, and I'm not sure if there is such a creature, plug in firewire cable first then then connect A/C power.
