However, I have one more concern I hope you can help me with. Is it safe to
hot plug a firewire device, such as the Lexar Firewire CF card reader, into
the Umax S900? Or is it better to first shut down the S900 before plugging
in a device?

As I mentioned previously, it's ok with the card reader - I have a Lexar CF reader and I do it all the time on three different Macs as well as the s900.
My routine is.....plug in the card reader and then insert the card into the card reader.
Although it's probably ok, I do not insert the card in the reader before plugging in the firewire cable.
Not worth taking a chance with the data that's on the card.
However, with self powered external devices such as external firewire drives with its own A/C supply, ALWAYS plug in the firewire cable FIRST before powering up the external device.
To repeat, first plug in the firewire cable (no need to shut down the computer) and then power up the external device.
After a few seconds the device will be recognized and mount on the desktop (I also have an external firewire drive.)
