Hi Jerry,
I just found a serious timing bug in SDTEST; it won't detect
any sound card on a P5-100 or faster :( I'll post an update
when the program get fixed.
Meanwhile, the setup program included in SBP2DU/UP was unable
to initialize my PnP SB Pro 2 compatible card properly. The
PnP initializer program from OPTi (SNDINIT) still required,
otherwise only few DOS sound programs works -- the rest either
unable to find the sound card (including Blaster Master),
reporting IRQ/DMA error (VOXIT/VEDIT2), or just crashed.
Yeah, exactly the same behavior... ;)
SDTEST results as follows (view with monospaced font):
----- Initialized with SNDINIT -----
Adlib FM : detected at 388h (stereo)
SB FM : detected at 220h (stereo) <--- DOS MIDI player will
use this
SB DSP : version 3.2 (stereo) <--- SB Pro compability mode
base address 220h properly configured
interrupt line 7
DMA channel 1
WSS FM : not detected
WSS DSP : not detected
----- Without SNDINIT (cold boot defaults) -----
Adlib FM : detected at 388h (stereo) <--- DOS MIDI player will
use this
SB FM : not detected
SB DSP : version 2.1 (mono) <--- This is off course wrong,
base address 220h but some util will falsely
interrupt line 7 detect SB card at 220h
DMA channel error <--- Can't record with this
WSS FM : detected at 530h (stereo) <--- WSS compability mode
WSS DSP : detected at 530h (stereo) properly configured
If you can record from _Linux_ and your card recognized as SB
Pro / SB Pro 2 compatible (not Windows Sound System), then what
you need is the correct _DOS initializer_ program from your
sound card's _chipset_ maker (i.e. OPTi, Vibra, or ESS).
If you can see the card physically, it's the largest or second-
largest chip on it. Otherwise, you might able to get the info
from Win98's System Info. Last resort, ask Toshiba helpline,
they should have the exact spec for your laptop's sound card.
