Alex is Jake's junior age-wise, but he sounds more together to me. Reminds me of what Stuart Duncan was like when he was about 12. He's got an old soul.
The music Jake and Alex are playing is very conversational, yes. Good stuff that way. Lots of chops, yes. I don't hear any 'curmudgeonness' in your remarks. Best I can tell, you're giving credit where credit is due. All I hear is that you recognize the difference in the sound of youth and the sound a man takes on when he's had to live life for a while and deal with everything that goes with it. Lots of wiz kids around these days, seems like. As Clyde suggested, the language is a different thing, a different accent. Some of it soaks in, some not. They're looking for their way, just like we all are. I suspect there'll be a lot of inspired music coming from both these young guys. I don't have to understand what they're saying or identify with it to know they've got chops.
