Of course. But what managers value (as manifested in their actions, if
not their thoughts) can't be too out of line with the actual (vs.
espoused) culture of a corporation. Otherwise, who'd want them around?

Anyway, your point about the size of the team is interesting -- I'd
have thought that in a smaller team, there'd be a greater need for
someone who could step into a higher level of responsibility. Where
I'm working now, there's just two of us; if my counterpart were
suddenly removed from the scene, I'd have to take over a bunch of
stuff that I currently don't have to think about.
