The scaled-back objectives needn't be "small" in the sense of
unambitious and uninteresting. Quite the contrary -- they need to be
as ambitious and interesting as possible but within the available
capabilities. And the activity (and outcomes) have to be carried out
in a way that's visible to, and creates buzz and a desire to belong
in, the broader community from which the group seeks attention (and
participation).

Otherwise, yeah, we're just doing small stuff that isn't worthwhile.
May as well go home then...
