More replies to myself: this "buzz" and "desire" stuff needs first to
be genuinely felt by the people who are currently engaged in the
activity. They have to be engaged in something that they think is
seriously and sincerely cool and worthy.

If it's not sincere, people will pick up on it very quickly.
