Question: Should I call the potential employers and ask where things

I would be able to contact the hiring manager directly in any case.

Hi John,

If you have a contact person there, I think it's okay to call to touch
base and to ask if the position has been filled. If you don't have a
contact person and would have to plead for information and be
transferred from person to person on the phone, I think you're better
off sitting back and waiting. Never underestimate the sabotaging power
of a person who answers the phone. You don't want anyone to go back to
the hiring manager with, "What a pain in the behind this guy is!"

I have never written a follow-up letter, but that seems like a less
obtrusive way to ask the same question of the people who you talked to.
