Non-response doesn't always mean no job. It took two years to get an offer
here, and six months to solidify the offer after we agreed to the basics.

It was one of those cases where I knew they needed a tech writer but they had
no clue so after two years of my knocking on their door and stopping with a
bright "Hi again, here's my updated resume, nice to see you!" at job fairs I
applied for a different job when they posted one. I was well enough qualified
for that one to get my portfolio in front of the guy who does the hiring, who
knew he needed a tech writer (except he didn't know what a tech writer is and
what it does, still pretty much doesn't, just does his Captain Picard "Make It
So!" thingie and sits back in amazement). After those years of knocking, it
took another six months for him to convince upper management to let him create
the new position. My only serious complaint is the lack of management (they'll
blow off team meetings for months in a row, promise to meet with me
individually but then blow those meetings off too, then complain that the
project isn't progressing faster -- unfair and possibly dangerous to my job).

It's a different way to work but still could be my dream job. We're working on
it.

It pays to be picky -- and to take work picking apples or in a call center if
that's what is needed to keep the rent paid while we keep looking for the job
that makes our heart sing. When we find that job it's going to be good for us
and WOW for the company.

Thinking as an employer: if there are three kinds of employees,

   o it's just a paycheck
o it's a stepping stone to my next job
o it's my spiritual calling with people I care about

Which one do _you_ want?
