As great as company wide benefits/events are I received some sage advice early in my years from a wizened director. "People hire into companies, but they quit supervisors". In my experience I have found this to be true in a lot of cases. Even a great department that has performed well for years can see a sudden exodus of staff by simply changing the supervisor in charge of them. Mike Hamilton V.P. Product Management MadCap Software

I agree, though, I would say most companies offer some level of incentives, from free coffee to annual picnics to employee of the month. Even in economic booms you don't hear reports of whole industries collapsing because companies lost employees faster than they could hire them.
