Rusty, Indeed it's not very likely that GPS would become unavailable and that's not the reason to seek diversity. The quality of any timing device improves when it is using multiple sources and/or network paths. For the same reason BPM involves dozens of sources in the compilation of UTC, not just the single one that proved the most accurate. I frankly admit it is a bit theoretical in our situation, GPS easily fullfills the accuracy needs for any NTP server. Still many servers have DCF or WWV receivers as second source, although ntpd never selects them. Curiosity and love for the experiment is another important drive. My friends never stop explaining me that I don't need sub-millisecond accuracy and that they really don't mind if I show up several seconds late in the pub. And of course they're absolutely right. I bet that goes without exception for all the pool members, but still here we are, experimenting with our NTP servers and some of us even looking for other time sources than GPS... best regards, Jan Hoevers _______________________________________________ timekeepers mailing list [email protected] https://fortytwo.ch/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/timekeepers
