My server is in the same situation. It does get cdma but that's
essentially just a GPS repeater, and a whole lot more expensive than the
GPS solution. My idea is to setup a stratum 1 server at home where I
can hang a gps receiver out the window. and then have that be a
reference clock for the datacenter downtown.
Addressing a couple other things in this topic. I've been starting to
look into setting up the unit and I've even been looking at getting
custom pcb boards printed for the intermediate "hub" like one person did
when setting it up.
I've tried to find a diverse sample of stratum 1 servers with varying
success. Especially since servers that were once really stable are now
suddenly fluctuating a lot. I would almost recommend to go stratum 3
since the further from the source you are, the more stable the upstream
servers are. If you pick 5 random stratum 2 servers, then the chances
of those times fluctuating a lot isn't going to be as common as choosing
5 random stratum 1 servers. Basically if I was Joe Consumer and I have
a decent stable connection at home I would just pick me 5 or 6 stratum 2
servers and then just not think about it. But I think most of us on
this list are a little more than "Joe Consumer." Just find it amusing
that when you think about it we're talking about millisecond time
differences and people recommending OpenBSD because of its nanosecond
precision and stuff. Find it all really entertaining, even though I'm
just as guilty of it--I just spontaneously start to get worried when I
noticed the offset on my server varies more than 1msec :)
