I see that the feelings about this run hot for many.

Of course Hollywood stars have gotten away with murder (and other
crimes) since there first was a Hollywood - there is nothing new about
that, and it predates modern media. In the same way, powerful members
of any Company Town across the country often get away with crimes. The
determining factor here is not so much celebrity as it is connections
to powerful and wealthy people and institutions.

As much as you may be against statutory rape (I take second place to
no one in being against that particular crime) it does not change the
underlying facts of the Polanski case. He did not get away with rape
because of his celebrity (indeed, he plead guilty to it). He did not
get a lighter sentence for the crime because he was a celebrity
(indeed both the prosecutor and the judge in the case were out to give
him a much more severe penalty than non-celebrities (or other
celebrities) got for the same crime. The inability to settle this case
a long time ago is a result of the abuse of power by the DA and the
Judge.

This has nothing to do with the state or the law forgiving him. He
should get the penalty he deserved, under the law and based on the
current practices of the time, for the crime he plead guilty to. Any
consequence for fleeing the jurisdiction should be suspended in the
interest of justice, given the gross perversion of justice perpetrated
by the State and Court in this case. If those two things happen I
don't think anyone would have anything to complain about, and I don't
think he will spend too much more time in prison.

The victim's feelings are relevant only because the only thing that
has prevented her from fully putting this behind her has been the
power abuses of the court and prosecutors office.
