I've clearly misunderstood the people who recommended it to me, and the Linux Mint website. When they said it's the 4th most common distribution I assumed they meant what they said. From what you say they only meant one of their several flavours (I had no idea they had several at the time I began). I'm committed to LMDE since I've spent so much time installing it on my laptop. I can't face the idea of learning another flavour of linux for my old desktop. One is surely more than enough. Having different versions around would drive me crackers. So this is all too hard for a simple user to understand.
