If you are not experienced in Linux I would think that LMDE Mint will
give you ongoing issues as it will be updating frequently.  Whereas
using a stable Ubuntu LTS release (long term support) will not change
much which means once everything is running.  Assuming you choose the
same desktop UI (e.g. GNOME, KDE) it won't be hard to change distro
compared to the change from Windows to Linux.
