Have you tried the capture channels tutorials, where you can render
a special lite with low settings, then blur the shadows.. speeds
things up a bit.

Thanks for the reminders about the lost windows! Just one of those things...
I tried the capture channels tut but ended up with crazy distorted
colors, couldn't get it working. I'll have another look at that. I
don't really like the Blur effect, but it's indispensable for now.
