That's an interesting solution. Especially that it can be done by a side-car
server that essentially receives the mailing list and reforwards messages as
needed.

It's not something that I have the chops for, but it is interesting. It is also
interesting that each Apache committer has a FreeBSD account running on
people.apache.org.

(I've only been on users@ OO.o since this Summer, so I do excuse you.)

Have you ever seen this done? I am sure there are some interesting edge cases
that would come up and need to be added to the cases.

Still, it seems that an unsubscribed-user responder bot would be workable. If
the dummy e-mail address is a moderator account as well, it can request the
mailing list automatically from time to time.

Might make a good Google Summer of Code project.

PS: If the dummy e-mail address looks like a moderator, there may be even more
ways to smooth this process, since it will get all of the moderation requests
too.

(this is the 4th or 5th time since 2002 I explain the same thing on
this list, so I'm sure you'll excuse me)

"FOLKS" MUST KNOW AND BOTHER ABOUT NOTHING. EVER. THEY MUST SIMPLY,
COMPLETELY FORGET THE DAMN WHOLE "ISSUE" AND GET ON WITH THEIR LIFE
USING MAILING LISTS AS GOD INTENDED, IE ONLY REPLY TO THE LIST. ALL
"FOLKS" HAVE TO DO, ONCE AND FOR ALL, IS :

find one guy VERY good at procmail, with access to a linux server on
which doing what follows:

- periodically, automatically copy, with script, list of subscribers
  to a file

- subscribe dummy email address to list

- set up procmail on that dummy email address and read access to the
file above so that, every time a message is from an address NOT in
that file, it writes its MSG-ID to a cache and the nonsubscribed
  address to a must-get-copy-list.

  - From there on, every reply in that same thread (all these messages
are easily recognizable as replies to messages with MSG-ID already
in the cache) has its MSG-ID written to the cache AND a copy sent to
  the nonsubscribed email address

- burn the computer and internet connection of every subscriber that
still insists with sending duplicated replies.

Me, I will NOT do this for a bunch of reasons, that go from not having
in full all the requirements above to the thought that some of the
[email protected] people who insisted for years that the "resending-copy to
non-subscribed posters" are still around on the new aoo/libreoffice
lists, so they would keep doing things that way. However, the MSG-ID
trick above would be just be an improved version of this, already
existing and perfectly working one:
