just the last in the hundreds of confirmations over years than any approach based on recognizing from custom email headers who is subscribed and who isn't is (in this case at least) a completely stupid, completely unfeasible idea (this is not an attack to Mike, of course!) > Which brings me back to my [possibly Bayes-based] autoresponder idea > that's just been so thoroughly knocked on the head. please note that there are two completely separate issues that are being mixed up here but really shouldn't If I understand you correctly, and regardless of its feasibility, your "bayes" proposal deals with people who are too dumb or too unexperienced to find by themselves an answer that is already available in the online documentation or list archives. my autoresponder proposal deals with people who are not subscribed to the list, to make sure they see answers to their requests without pissing off subscribers with embarrassing, time-consuming "practices". The two sets of people are NOT the same. There will be many people who do subscribe to ask basic questions answered a million times before, and many non-subscribers who will post smart, useful and never seen before bug reports or other questions. So whatever we think of everything else, please let's at least NOT mix the two problems.
