In wordpad, you can just enter 0a2 followed by Alt+x. No ctrl+shift needed.
I just tested that a few seconds ago. Even a2 Alt+x will do the trick, the
zero is not needed.

Ahh. Thank you very much. I had the (wrong, as I now realise) impression
that the 0,a and 2 had to be pressed *while* the Ctrl+Shift+u were being
held down; this is what I found impossible.

On Windows XP, the Ctrl+Shift+u trick works in Wordpad but *not* in
OpenOffice; I can't test MS office because I don't have it installed.
Also,
in Wordpad, after hitting the 0, a and 2, you need to do Alt+x *instead
of*
the space bar to make the cent sign appear.
