Tom,

The screeners are looking for sharp, or pointed, or club-like
stuff. There is a good chance that a small rod tube would be
classified as a "club-like" device in the security area.
Remember, it doesn't matter if it IS a club or not. If Joe
Inspector judges it to be club-like, you won't be permitted to
carry it through security.

Last summer I was also forbidden to carry on any flies (Crazed
Traveler Brandishing Size 18 BWO Hijacks Plane to Cuba). Then
after carrying my reels on the first leg, I was prohibited (in
Canada) from carrying the reels. Apparently, I could use the
line to tie up the crew. Hmmmm. They offered to let me carry
the reels if I trashed the lines. Yeah, sure...

I made a heavy rod tube from 3" PVC plumbing pipe so it can be
safely checked and thoroughly xrayed. One end is capped and the
other has a threaded fitting. It has worked great for six trips.
I lashed some handles on and put the whole thing into one of
those plastic ski bags the airlines provide so the handles don't
catch on the conveyors. It will easily fit four or five rods
rolled up in a big beach towel. Haven't tried to drive a truck
over it but I think you could. Previously, two commercial
tube/cases got crunched by United.
