I get no information about the who the threaded messages are from if it is set to do nothing. No numbers, no names; very interesting. I have this turned off and if you are talking about threaded messages in the Mail app then this seems to work fine for me. I currently only have a few with two messages where I received a message and then replied, if I swipe to one of them Voiceover announces "Replied" and the name of the person who sent it, then it will say "2 messages in thread".
